My plan was for a simple knit dress that would be comfortable and cool for an outdoor wedding and I found just the right fabric for a bold and bright dress. My choice was Mood Fabrics’ Multicolor Stripe Rayon Jersey.
I knew I wanted to use McCall’s 6752, the same pattern from my stripe knit top from my last Mood Sewing Network Post. The description of this fabric on Mood Fabric’s website states “this lightweight jersey would make a stunning top or pullover dress. ” After reading this, I knew I had the perfect fabric in my cart.
The fabric is a bit sheer and I contemplated on what to use for the lining. I decided the top of the dress did not need lining since is was more oversized. I planned the stripes so the white would hit the shoulders and the waist. I knew I would need lining for the skirt and pulled out some tricot lining from my stash. I had it for quite sometime, back when I made the twins’ swimsuits. The tricot was the perfect weight and stretch. This was sewn separately from the skirt.
The pattern instructs you to insert elastic into the seam of the skirt and the bodice. I did not do this as I planned on belting it. In hindsight and after looking at these pictures, I need to add a piece of elastic. The combination of the weight of the skirt and my belt not being tight, pulled the skirt down. This is why the stripes don’t appear even and level in all the pictures. I plan on adding the elastic to get give that support for the waist. That is what sewing is all about, trial and error, lessons learned.
Here is the dress in action, my darling daughter, Kaitlyn, never stopped snapping pictures during this little photo shoot. I tell you I have some beautiful pictures in this group and they were quickly deleted!
As you can tell in this picture, the tricot lining keeps the skirt in place.
We have had record amount of rainfall in this area, so the wedding was moved indoors. I still felt perfectly dressed for the wedding and received many compliments on my dress. It was a beautiful wedding and there were two people dressed in Mood Fabrics, me in this dress and Paige in her lace dress.
This dress will be so fun to wear all summer long.
