Sometimes I see a ready-to-wear dress and I just can’t get the details out of my head and I have to create my own inspired version. That’s how it was the first time I saw this dress:
Gucci is having a big fashion moment right now. The classic web stripe is everywhere. Although I felt it was a wrong time to be worn, the Gucci web stripe even appeared at the Royal Wedding a week ago. It’s just that popular.
When I decided to create my inspired dress, I knew it wouldn’t be a direct copy. I love the faux wrap style and obviously the web trim. But, what I don’t like is the gathered bodice and pleated skirt. I wanted a dress with more structure. So I drafted my own dress based on my own blocks. I already had the Ivory Heavy Scuba Knit Suede in my stash.
Even though the description says “heavy”, this fabric is a medium weight neoprene. It’s thick enough to be opaque and to not require a lining. And it has really good stretch. One side feels like suede and the other side is smooth. I used the smooth side for the right side of my dress.
For my web trim, I created it using Navy Grosgrain Ribbon with red grosgrain ribbon stitched on top.
And stitched onto the bodice.
And it’s also stitch at the midriff and I created a bow that’s hand sewn on.
For my dress, I felt it would be better suited with a metal zip.
This was such a fun dress to create. I love the idea of being able to create a dress inspired by one of the most prestigious fashion houses in the world, for only a fraction of the cost!
