Warm Orchid Medallions

For someone who prefers warm weather to cold weather on any given day, I’m loving winter sewing this month!

One look at Mood Fabric’s ultra soft black wool knit with orchid pink medallions had me wishing for freezing temperatures ? This lovely medium weight knit features a movable drape and is perfect for many designs.

I chose the Blackwood Cardigan pattern by Helen’s Closet.

This pattern is very well designed with minimal excess fabric in the front and a close fit around the neck and shoulders. Its fitted shape and extra long sleeves make it perfect for wearing under jackets and vests.

Having sewn the pattern once before, I chose to make some design alterations to let this fabric shine! The front band and sleeve cuffs were sewn in a contrasting fabric – a black rib knit from Mood. In order to avoid disrupting the medallion pattern, I omitted the lower band and extended the length of the bodice to match the length of the front band. I also omitted the pockets.

The sleeves are designed to be very long and my arms are on the short side. I wanted to keep the length on the sleeve so I shortened the cuff by two inches. I really like the shorter cuff and might make this a permanent alteration for future sweaters!

To stabilize the hem, I placed a 1″ piece of interfacing directly below the hem.

There’s nothing better for the sewing mojo than an easy pattern with a good fit combined with a fabulous fabric!

Mood Fabrics also sells this lovely knit in black with a green medallion, and with wools like this, bring on the Arctic Blast!

Looks beautiful. I’d love to see your version in the black stripe with contrasting polka dots. Love this with your boots.

I am so happy to see something made with this fabric! I thought it was lovely on the Mood website, but it didn’t fit in with other projects I have planned, so I gave it a pass. Love the proportion of the pattern on you and with this pattern.
