The Last Shirts and Shorts of Summer

Peter Lappin Mood Cotton Lawn Shirt

It’s only mid-August, but the mornings here in New York City already feel cooler and I’ve begun noticing dried leaves on the sidewalks.  Fall is on its way.

But hold on — I haven’t even gone on summer vacation yet: I still need some summer togs suitable for a week at the beach!

I bought these two lightweight cottons — a lilac swiss dot and a boldly printed lawn — last summer but I never used them.   (You can see Mood Fabrics’ selection of swiss dot fabrics here and cotton prints here.)

This summer, I decided to turn them into two casual button-down shirts, using a couple of vintage patterns in my stash.  I also needed shorts.  I chose a light chartreuse linen that coordinates well with both my shirting fabrics.  (Mood Fabrics’ wide selection of linen can be viewed here.)

I love the results.  Both the shirts and the shorts are cool and comfortable and definitely give my summer wardrobe a boost.  (Knit T-shirts get boring after a while and I don’t find them as breathable as wovens; they cling.)

Some garment details:

I’m ready for my vacation.

Now let’s hope the summer weather holds out for a few more weeks!

See you in September!

Looking good! I have to admit that I wasn’t quite sure what you could possibly do with that print. But you’ve shown me. I love surprises. Those colours look fab with the shorts.

I’m in love with this little mix and match set! The chartreuse linen, safari-esque shorts really slay me. And gorgeous work, as always, Peter. I’ve never seen that button detail on the back of a collar before. Such a cool detail!

Brilliant tops — I just love them. And, I’m jealous that Fall is around in the corner. In LA, we’re coming up to our hotter Santa Ana season until late November (and sometimes even in December, a la The Holiday. The shorts are a perfect match and very well done!

You always come up with great combos. And, your sets of garments every month put me to shame! I meant to pair yesterday’s top with a pencil skirt, but the skirt is still on my sewing table. I just couldn’t get it finished in time. And, here you are with shorts and not one but two shirts! Pattern matched shirts at that! Bravo, Peter, bravo!

Beautiful work with the print; I’m glad you ran the yoke on the cross-grain. I love that the back shirt collar detail echoes the print- fabulous! I wish that linen season would never end, but alas; this is the Northeast.

Gotta love the button placement on the printed shirt! Woohoo!
I still cannot begin to fathom just how quickly you sew up shirts. Yes, you just went to shirtmaking class, but still… (all in awe).

Wow! Your workmanship blows me away! For sure doing pleats instead of elastic for waistband makes your shorts more classy. Fabric colors, patterns, textures – all work – all classy!

The print matching and pattern placement on that first shirt is insane! I was already loving it and then I saw the shape of that collar, the button at the back and the gingham under collar, fantastic Peter! Both are a great fit on you
