A Long Cardigan in Italian Wool Jersey

While winter is definitely not over here in Seattle, we are finally getting our first hints that it’s on its way out. Our crocuses have come up, and our daffodils are not far behind. The days are in the 50s (Fahrenheit, obviously!) with a bit more sun than in December and January. To celebrate, I wanted to make a warm cardigan to throw on for those days when a coat just wasn’t necessary. I wanted the cardigan to be versatile, so I decided it should be in a solid neutral that I didn’t already have in my closet. I ended up going with this brown […]

Isabel Marant-Inspired Sweater!

Hi, guys! Hope you’re all well and that those of you who celebrate Thanksgiving had a wonderful holiday! One of the best things about sewing is that you can take an idea and make it your own. You know, when you see something and like it, but wish it was just a little bit different? The idea from this came from a sweater from Isabel Marant’s Pre-Fall 2014 collection. I loved the colorblocking, particularly in grey and brown. It looks really cool together and is a fun alternative to the black and brown combos I’ve been seeing lately in fashion […]

A Black Kitten for Halloween

Happy Halloween everyone! When I was prioritizing my sewing plans for this month (so many plans, so little time!), I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to make baby girl a costume for her very first Halloween.  She just loves cats, and I thought it would be pretty easy to make her a cat costume.  Well, more like a kitten costume! First, I needed a little fabric.  I chose Mood Fabric’s black wool crepe because of course she had to be a black cat.  It is Halloween after all!  Next, I needed a cute pattern.  I dug through my stash and came up with the Oliver + S […]

Wool Jersey Swinger

I LOVE THIS DRESS!!! She is done up in Mood Fabric’s Italian double face wool & lycra jersey, she is the latest installment from the lovelies at By Hand London, she fit RIGHT OUT OF THE PACKAGE.  She is exquisitely drafted, she is my new little black dress, who would have ever thought I’d have two in my technicolor closet? The fabric is thick enough to skim and hug in all the right places, and yummy to sew with.  Except for the part where I godzilla steamed one of the bust cups and forever wrinkled it.  I have recently become […]

Comfy Cowl and Leggings

I currently can’t stop dreaming about making beautiful silk blouses and tailored wool coats and faux leather jackets, but my dreams are confounded by the fact that I’m so far into my pregnancy that all I want to wear are my comfiest comfies. So, to add a bit of polish to my daily wardrobe here in my last month of pregnancy, I decided to make a maternity-approved variation of the classic cowl from Mood Fabric’s black wool jersey. Mood describes this jersey as “a soft, tissue-weight wool jersey knit… perfect for t-shirts and tops.” I couldn’t agree more – it […]

A Manly Striped Sweater

I don’t tend to do much sewing when it comes to men’s clothing, much to my boyfriend’s disappointment. Not really sure what my hang-up is —every time I find myself working on the odd piece of clothing for him, I am reminded of how much I actually enjoy doing this type of stuff. Not a lot of fit issues, frills, or funky patterns. Just simple and straightforward and… safe. Since I average about one piece of clothing per year for my dude, I reckon it’s time to share for 2013—a striped sweater, in a very manly wool knit. We found […]

Cozy, Woolly Separates

Who doesn’t love to wear wool in the winter time? I feel like a broken record when I start singing the praises of wool, but foreal you guys—this stuff is awesome. It’s super warm and cozy, breathes very well (so you don’t get overheated in all that warm and cozy-ness), and it’s also antimicrobial, which means it naturally repels odors. Which means now you know why I wear so much wool and still manage to keep up with the laundry – it doesn’t need to be washed very frequently! Airing out is fine for day-to-day. Yay for being lazy! So […]

Two Simple Knit Dresses for Fall

As much as I looove working with beautiful fabrics that require special handling and specific sewing rules, sometimes a girl just needs a simple knit dress to throw on when she wants to look classy but feel she’s wearing pajamas. Fortunately for me, Mood Fabrics has an incredible assortment of knits, from lightweight cotton to cozy wool. A little bit of everything, I like that! So obviously, I made two because one CLEARLY is not enough. I used the Lady Skater pattern from Kitschycoo for both dresses—this is a great basic knit dress, easy to customize by just changing up the fabric. […]

Wool Jersey Top for My Mom

Happy holidays, everyone! Hope you’re enjoying celebrations with dear ones and staying warm (if you’re in the northern hemisphere, that is)! Like some of you, I bet, I swore off handmade presents this year. I’ve spent far too many Christmas Eves feverishly knitting at 2:00am, desperately trying to finish a gift before the morning. Not this year! No handmade gifts, and no stress for me! But when I spotted this gorgeous, heathered wool jersey at Mood, what could I do? It’s my mom’s favorite color, and I knew I could make her a top quickly and easily, so I broke […]
