Self-Drafted Wool Crepe Blouse and Pants

For the last two years I’ve been attending classes at Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) here in New York City.  Last semester I took a draping class that was dedicated to designing soft silhouettes like dolman sleeves, pegged skirts, and cowls. At the beginning of the semester we draped in muslin and then moved on to knit jersey and woven crepe.  For our final project, we were asked to drape a two-piece ensemble with a resort feel (think winter cruise).  One of the pieces had to include a cowl — either front neck, back neck, or underarm cowl, or a […]

A Whimsical Blouse in Anna Sui Silk

I always enjoy watching Anna Sui’s fashion shows. Her designs are playful and fun but not toddler like and twee. The fabrics she uses are usually prints and are often mixed together in interesting ways. When I saw this “Famous Designer Conversational Satin Faced Silk Chiffon” on Moodfabrics.com, I was pretty sure it was hers even though it wasn’t titled as such. I just adored the cats sitting on chairs, the red apples, the little scrolled frames and the texture, and snapped some up a few months back thinking it would certainly sell out quickly. (There is only a little […]

A Black Kitten for Halloween

Happy Halloween everyone! When I was prioritizing my sewing plans for this month (so many plans, so little time!), I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to make baby girl a costume for her very first Halloween.  She just loves cats, and I thought it would be pretty easy to make her a cat costume.  Well, more like a kitten costume! First, I needed a little fabric.  I chose Mood Fabric’s black wool crepe because of course she had to be a black cat.  It is Halloween after all!  Next, I needed a cute pattern.  I dug through my stash and came up with the Oliver + S […]

Transitional Basics in Beautiful Fabrics

I’ve been needing to fill in the blanks in my closet with classic “go-to” pieces for a while now.  And what better time than transitional wardrobe season with classic black and white. I love white shirts and white blouses.  The more interesting, the better… a not-so basic “basic” you could say. This Rebecca Taylor Vogue 1387 blouse is perfect.  It’s great for layering under a jacket now and perfect on its own for the warmer months.  I chose this beautiful Carolina Herrera single-ply silk crepe  from Mood Fabrics because it reminded me of the original designer garment. And what a […]

Double-Faced Wool Crepe & Houndstooth Dress

My usual journey when starting a new garment is the fabric.  I roam the aisle of Mood Fabrics’ NYC store touching fabrics and waiting for the perfect piece to jump out at me, demanding to be brought home and sewn up. This time though, it was the pattern that spoke to me first.  It was Vogue 1370 ~ a sheath dress with fabric inserts and literally I saw the dress in black and white. With that idea in mind, I headed off to Mood to purchase fabric.  I don’t know about you, but me, I love a great wool crepe […]

Menswear Suiting for Fall

This month’s garment is a combination of menswear suiting and wool crepe. A dress (yes another dress!) that works with my style aesthetic and the corporate dress code that governs my days…oh and most importantly I’m sewing fall now.  Yes, I know that there are still lovely summer breezes blowing and days full of heat and humidity…but every fashion magazine is telling me it’s fall…and quite frankly this year I actually want to sew fall early. So with two things in mind (designer interpretation and fall fashions) I went to the mens’ suiting department on the upper floor of the […]

A 40’s Wool Crepe Wrap Dress

I know, this dress looks strikingly similar to the 40s wrap dress that Peter made for his identical cousin Cathy earlier this month, not to mention I’ve already dabbled in wool crepe for summer wear, as well as a full 40’s wool crepe dress. Yeesh. Ya think it’s possible for me to branch out a little here? Nuh uh, no way. Not me. I actually bought this fabric ‘way back when I was visiting Mood Fabrics in NY. I’m sure y’all are sick of hearing about it at this point, but heyyyy I’ll be working through that stash for at […]

A Wool Crepe Dress for Spring

I know it’s spring out.  The calendar tells me so…the weather not so much!  You know it’s doing that hot/cold/hot/cold thing that April likes to do.  But I sooooo want it to be spring.  I want warm breezes and long sunny days with the promise of fun and a wardrobe of dresses that I can wear every day.  Because it’s spring although it doesn’t feel like spring, I decided to use a brightly colored lightweight wool crepe to bring a little spring loveliness to my life.   This lime green wool crepe was my starting point.  Somewhere I read/saw that […]

A Flouncy Wool Crepe Pencil Skirt

When I was visiting the Mood Fabrics store last month in New York, I had no intention of even stepping foot in the wool section on the top floor. Don’t get me wrong – I love wool, and I ESPECIALLY love wool crepe, but as Tennessee rapidly approaches summertime weather at breakneck speed, I was afraid I would have little to no use for a big piece of cozy wool until much, much later in 2013. And I don’t know about you, but I don’t want stuff my gorgeous fabrics away in a bin until the seasons flip – I […]
