Confetti Tweed Jacket

I have been eyeing this gorgeous Mood Fabrics’ Confetti Cotton-Blend Tweed for about three months and in March I just knew I really needed it for spring.  My accumulation of fabric is going better than my making of garments lately but that is okay, I need some for a rainy day, right?  After this fabric arrived at my doorstep, I had time to touch, feel and admire it.  With such admiration, I needed to find a pattern.  I used to always have the patterns first and then had trouble finding the right fabric.  It is much easier to find the [...]

A Tweed Skirt for Autumn

There are some projects that begin so perfectly, with just the right match of fabric to pattern, that the universe has to step in and make things more exciting, so that a seamstress doesn’t get too smug. That’s my theory anyhow. Despite being a relatively straightforward pattern, the making of this skirt was filled with calamity! You wouldn’t know to look at it now, of course. It’s all tweedy and prim, with that lovely houndstooth lulling one into dreams of autumn, as if it hasn’t caused a thousand headaches. Don’t be fooled. This skirt may be cute, but it’s evil. [...]

Purple Tweed Suit

I’m so happy to showcase my first Mood Sewing Network project.  As I perused the online fabric store, my thoughts were racing.  There were so many possibilities.  The online fabric choices are endless.  It was hard to settle and pick one project AND one fabric to make something special for myself.  Finally, I decided on a purple tweed and a rasberry pink poly charmeuse to make Vogue’s Badgley Mischka suit.  This has been on my to-make list for over two years.   With the polar vortex back in Chiberia (Chicago), I can hardly believe that Spring is less than [...]

Brit-Inspired Houndstooth Blazer

Guys, I’ve been watching a LOT of TV lately. I feel like a bit of a couch potato, but it’s totally justified since I work in film and television—it’s homework, right? JUST SAY YES. My main obsession lately has been all things BBC- Dr. Who, Torchwood, Luther, and Sherlock, to name a few. All of this led to a sudden, desperate attraction to classic British wool garments—there are only so many times you can see Benedict Cumberbatch swirling around in a fantastic wool coat before you want to wrap yourself in tweed from head to toe! If you ever find [...]

Men’s Donegal Tweed Winter Coat

With winter on the horizon, it’s time for true cold weather outerwear.  For me, that means wool. At Mood Fabrics NYC, I found a lovely donegal tweed — the name generally given to tweeds with bits of yarn in other colors woven in, even if they’re not made in County Donegal, Ireland.  This one is mainly a brown salt and pepper, but as you can see, there are other colors too, like rust and beige.  The weave is coarse but the hand is quite soft. Editor’s note: Lots of great pea coat fabric options at MoodFabrics.com. For the lining, I [...]

Oscar de la Renta Bouclé Jacket with Leather Trim

The navy and black color combo is currently a very popular trend. Even though I still think you shouldn’t wear black shoes with a navy dress, I do like them together in fabrics or colorblocked. Which is why, when I spotted this black and almost-navy plaid boucle at Mood Fabrics, I knew I wanted it for something. It’s Oscar de la Renta fabric with metallic threads and tiny black sequins, and reminds me somewhat of the fabric used for this dress – also OdlR, and also with sequins. I decided on jacket 106 from the February 2013 Burda issue, but [...]

Bias-cut Tweed Dress

Tweed is one of the nicest and easiest fabrics to sew, in my opinion. Did you know that the origin of tweed is said to be the Tweed River that flows along the border between England and Scotland? Yet apparently, the name of the fabric is a result of a clerical error when tweel (old name for tweed  for its characteristic 2×2 twill weave) was misspelled as tweed. Anyway, it is a perfect wool fabric for beginners. It doesn’t distort easily, reacts very well to steam and heat, easy to sew, easy to cut, easy to hide mistakes, it is reversible, durable, and, and, [...]

A TNT in NYC Designer Tweed

This dress is all about the “famous NYC designer” fabric that I chose for it.  I did add some pink piping to bring out the pink flecks in the fabric but I knew when I found it in the designer aisle at Mood NYC, that I was going to use my TNT dress pattern for it.   Some stats: Fabric ~ 2 yards designer tweed fabric   Notions ~ 20″ metallic zipper pink piping pink rayon bemberg lining black rayon seam tape pink rayon seam tape bias binding 1/4 yard black lightweight interfacing   Construction Techniques: All of the construction [...]

Yellow Tweed Sheath with Tie Collar

My newest dress is in a beautiful yellow Oscar de la Renta tweed from Mood. When I saw this fabric online, I knew it had to be mine. It’s mainly yellow, has loads of texture and sequins, and a total lux feel to it. I set about finding the perfect pattern to showcase it and had a bit of a roller coaster along the way. My first pick was McCall’s 5972, the curved collar design. I made a muslin but could not get the skirt portion to fit me. Fine. I’ll just use my TNT straight skirt pattern for that [...]
