Saint James Ponte Dress and Long Cardigan

Spring is in the air and a cute dress is a much needed item for me.  I wanted a dress that would be a good transition piece and fun to wear.  Enter Mood Fabrics’ Navy/Ecru Saint James Ponte Knit, an amazing knit, probably one of the nicest knits I have ever sewn.  I am sorry to say it is sold out in the navy/ecru colorway but  no fear there are several other option: red/navy, ecru/gray, navy/kelly. or take a look at all the color choices     My pattern for this fabulous knit, Butterick 6207,  which has raglan sleeves, neckband, […]

A Bright Winter Ensemble

Yeah, I know. I kind of went Sgt Pepper’s on these photos. January will do that to me. Lack of light, lack of warmth, lack of photographer. The trifecta. But let’s play Where’s Waldo and find my garment in this riotous, ham handed, amateur photoshopped collage! Can you find the rectangle of sweater knit above? That’s my “self drafted” H&M knockoff, made with some famous designer novelty knit (similar here). I succumbed to Black Friday and bought a couple of drapey sweaters at The Beast, and upon further perusal, found they were really two large rectangles with two small rectangles […]

Houndstooth Sweater-Knit Jersey Dress

I thought I owned one of everything in black and white houndstooth, and then I saw this sweater-knit/jersey on the Mood Fabrics website. I realized I owned nothing in a houndstooth jersey, and remedied the void by placing a quick order on the Mood website (see lots of great sweater knits from Mood HERE). Continuing my January theme of simple sewing, I selected Butterick’s See & Sew 5873 one more time and made the dress in a day. While my first dress was a warm weather dress, sewn from Mood’s beach/camo jersey, this beefy knit should carry me through South […]

Sweater-Knit Cardigan

You know those days when you need comfort foods? Well, some days I feel like I need comfort clothes—and for those days what’s better than a sweater knit? Online at Mood Fabrics there is quite a selection of sweater knits. After much deliberation, I ordered Mood Fabrics’ Mallard Blue Brushed Cozy Acrylic Knit, with blue being one of my favorite colors. For the pattern, I went with Simplicity 2309, a cardigan with a wide collar and a flounce at the bottom. This fabric is the coziest and oh so warm. It’s perfect for these cold winter days in the Midwest. […]

Sweater Knit Cowl-Neck Tunic

If you are a driven person like me, you are constantly challenging yourself to do better and accomplish more. Who wants to cruise on the bunny slope when you’re comfortable skiing moguls? Due to recent time constraints, I was forced to rediscover the joy of simple sewing or not sew at all. Not only did I realize I should do more easy sewing, but my latest project reminded me of why I started sewing again in the first place. My adventurous side led me to order this Olive Abstract Knit from Mood Fabrics without ordering a sample. Fortunately I loved […]

Ready for Fall & Winter with an Italian Sweater Knit Dress

Where I live, fall comes without the trees changing colors. It’s a bit of a bummer. Still, you can tell that fall is in the air when all the girls start breaking out their sweaters, tights and boots. In preparation for Southern California “sweater weather” I recently browsed the sweater knit section of Mood Fabrics in Los Angeles. This Italian wool sweater knit caught my eye immediately. The fine gauge was cozy but not bulky. Warm but not too warm. The fine gauge was also perfect for the Rebecca Taylor sweater dress pattern (a.k.a. Vogue 1315). The pockets had me at […]

Men’s Knit Sweaters for Fall, or Hooray for Houndstooth!

Since I started sewing, I have been curious about sweater knits and how to use them.  Can you really sew a credible men’s sweater?  This month I found out the answer is YES! At Mood Fabrics in NYC, there’s an entire aisle devoted to sweater knits—so many gorgeous choices.  On my most recent visit, I spotted (and quickly fell in love with) a bolt of gray and maroon Italian wool knit houndstooth.  I purchased a yard and a half, figuring I could make a men’s sweater out of it.  Little did I realize there would be enough to make three […]

Blue Marine Sweater Dress

I’m continuing my current passion for sweater knits in this Burda sheath dress from September 2012. While I’m still tracing mine from the magazine (tears), you can download it for a mere $5.40 from the BurdaStyle website. This marine blue knit from Mood Fabrics NYC was purchased in the same bundle as the autumnal pullover I just completed. The knit is incredibly soft. I love the way the colors meld in this knit. I originally sewed this dress to wear to a Hanukkah party and have pulled it out a few times for work since then. Since the pattern uses […]

The Wild Side Pencil Skirt

Let’s start this out with a wardrobe confession: this is my first pencil skirt ever! Not the first one I’ve made, but the first one I’ve worn (or even tried on)! I love the silhouette on other people, but I worried that it wouldn’t do any favors for my rectangular shape. But when I spotted this sweater knit at Mood, I knew it had to be a pencil skirt! I didn’t have much time to sew this month, and really didn’t want to tinker with fit and muslins, so I used the skirt portion of my vintage McCall’s 5995 pattern […]
