Sunny Blue Sky Striped Cotton Chambray – Simplicity 1371 and Simplicity 8389

July is the peak of summer. I love that the days are long and the sun shines so bright.  What I hate is the humidity and the extreme temperatures, and everyone has the AC set to “North Pole”.  So it can be a struggle trying to figure out what to wear. But if you plan to be outdoors, light and airy clothing is the way to go! I purchased this lovely Blue Sky Striped Cotton Chambray a few months with the thought of making a shirt.  When I pulled it from the packaging, I quickly changed my mind and decided […]

Gold Stripes and Ivory Creme – Vogue 8747 and McCall 5818

I’m so happy to final post about this shirt that I made with Mood’s beautiful Italian Amber Striped Cotton-Rayon Shirting.  This is one gorgeous textile.  And I’m not just saying that because I’m a Mood blogger.  This is a definite must have fabric; you should get it!     The title color is “amber”, but I call it gold.  The online photo does not show the richness of the colors nor does it show the luster.  The sheen is not gaudy like some ultra shiny satin fabrics.  It’s luminous with gives an air of sophistication.  The striped pattern […]

Wide-Leg Seersucker Pants

I didn’t know I wanted a pair of wide-leg beach pants until the Blue and White Bengal Cotton Seersucker arrived from Mood Fabrics. Seriously, I was planning a dress with a ruffle collar, but a new vision appeared once I opened the package. This is no pinstripe seersucker, but a lovely light and airy fabric featuring 1/4″ stripes.  It is slightly puckered with a wonderful drape and is suitable for several garments. As one who almost always prefers a slim silhouette, I was ready for something different and pulled an old Vogue pattern from my stash. (The pattern is out of […]

Saint James Knit

Knowing I can sew a garment for a tiny fraction of the retail price simply thrills me, and is one of the reasons I continue to sew. I knew I could make the $200 Saint James Toledo striped dress I saw in a boutique in Charlotte, but I didn’t know that Mood Fabrics stocked Saint James knits ~ the very same fabrics! Upon finding Burda 6722, I knew it was meant to be. Mood offers the Saint James ponte knits in several colors, and I chose the white background with black stripes. I rarely sew Burda patterns (no reason in particular) […]

Black, Red, and White Striped Rayon Jersey Knit – Vogue 1314

After a mini purge of my closets, I noticed that there were huge empty spaces that need to be filled with more clothes made by me. 😉 I decided to start with a few tops. This is the second of many more to make.  My new toppers will fill the void were the worn tattered garments used to hang. So here’s to beefing up my wardrobe with a simple pullover t-shirt made with Mood’s Italian Pirate Black/Mars Red/Bright White Bengal Striped Stretch Rayon Jersey Knit.   This jersey is fantastic. It’s perfect for keeping it simple. I used Vogue 1314 […]

Sleeveless Striped Metallic Knit Top

After last month’s complex Easter dress, I decided to keep it simple for April and make a knit top in a pattern I’ve used before with good results. The pattern is Jalie 2921. I used Mood Fabric’s oyster/brown gray metallic striped cotton jersey knit. A couple months ago I’d bought a cut of it along with its matching larger stripe for a different knit top, but the project bombed. However, I liked the fabric so much that I got another 1.5 yards and went for a garment I knew would turn out. Since I wanted more of a casual look […]

Madewell-Inspired Striped Silk Dress

This dress was inspired by a dress I saw at Madewell a while back. I’ve been loving the multi-directional stripes I’ve seen lately, but all the dresses I’ve found haven’t exactly been in a college girl’s budget. So I decided to just make my own! The fabric is this denim blue-striped woven from Mood Fabrics. I liked working with it for the most part but I did have issues with ironing. I ironed the dress, starched it. Re-ironed it, and starched it again and it still looks a little wavy, especially on the skirt. I don’t mind because the fabric smells […]

Bold Stripes Jersey Dress

My plan was for a simple knit dress that would be comfortable and cool for an outdoor wedding and I found just the right fabric for a bold and bright dress.  My choice was Mood Fabrics’ Multicolor Stripe Rayon Jersey. I knew I wanted to use McCall’s 6752, the same pattern from my stripe knit top from my last Mood Sewing Network Post.  The description  of this fabric on Mood Fabric’s website states “this lightweight jersey would make a stunning top or pullover dress. ”  After reading this, I knew I had the perfect fabric in my cart. The fabric is a […]

Striped Jersey “Nantucket” top

“I don’t really know how to do casual clothes.” Oscar de la Renta I don’t know how to sew casual clothes – the kind of knock around frocks you wear on the weekend – but I’m going to learn. I believe the art of making a simple garment requires an underestimated level of sophistication that I’ve yet to acquire. How does one – Avoid the discount department store look? – Address excessive ease in loose-fitting patterns? – Achieve a finished appearance despite a lack of construction details? – What is Eileen Fisher’s secret? I gave myself the assignment to sew […]
