Designer Silk Chiffon Panel Top

Spring?  Well, here in the Missouri  it comes and goes, in fact, Mother Nature is being quite stingy with the nice days.  There is a saying here, if you don’t like the weather today in Missouri wait a few days and it will be totally different.  My plan is to be a step ahead of Mother Nature and to be ready for spring.  I ordered this gorgeous Mood Fabrics’ famous designer blue/gray striped geometric silk chiffon panel last month with plans of a flowy top.  This fabric is no longer available but no fear, feast your eyes upon these […]

Bereft From Brocade

Hands down one of the best things about temperatures dropping: brocade. A few short years ago I would have laughed like hell if you told me I’d say that. Now Fall hits and just about all I can think of is brocade. I walked into Mood Fabrics for something, I really don’t remember what, but I do clearly recall I had a list, a gameplan, and all carefully laid out thoughts left my head at a full tilt boogie when I saw this Zac Posen Floral Silk Brocade. SILK Brocade. Gaaaaaaaaaah. I can haz SILK Brocade?! I squeezed the pathetic list […]

The Laughing in Taffeta Birthday Dress

For my birthday this year, I wanted something insane. I like to get what I want. I paired this Oscar de la Renta Silk Taffeta (sold out, but peep these Oscar silks) with Magenta Dotted Organza (don’t be fooled by the picture, it’s magenta for sure!), meaning to use the organza as a crinoline… but, well, plans (as usual) changed once I stared the yardage in the face. I also paired up patterns: Cynthia Rowley 1802 and Simplicity 0320, heavily modified to get the look I wanted at the shoulder and back. One could almost say ham handedly modified.  I definitely […]

Embroidered Silk Blouse and Twill Wrap Skirt

For this month’s Mood Sewing Network project I worked with two very different fabrics to make separates. First up is the blouse, for which I used this Marc Jacobs Silk with Embroidered Dots which I’ve had my eye on for months! It’s a beautiful silk crepe and when you get close up you realise the polka dots are actually formed of dense embroidery making it wonderfully unique. I was a little apprehensive about working with a fabric which sounded like it could be quite tricky, especially for a project with some fiddly aspects, but I took my time and had […]

Hotter Than July In Marigold Tribal Print Twill and Mustard Striped Washed Silk

Summer has finally arrived in Chicago.  Well, at least it feels like summer.  Last weekend temperatures were in the 90’s with a lot of humidity.  HOT! This Mood Fabric project was the perfect kick off for my summer wardrobe. At first sight, I fell in love with this Marigold Tribal-Print Twill by Oscar de La Renta.  This funky tribal medium weight twill has a stiff drape and is great for pencil skirts and shorts.  I decided to pair this with a sassy little Burda skirt featured in the Burda magazine February 2011 issue.  I only glanced at the construction details.  […]

Colorblocked Silk Skirt a la Kate Spade

“Well if it isn’t Sultry and Sunshine!” blurted the drunk man upon seeing my friend and me. The year was 1984. My friend resembled Angelina Jolie and well, I just looked like myself, only 29 years younger. It’s not hard to know who was Sultry and who was Sunshine. I’m not sure what little Miss Sunshine was wearing that evening but I doubt it was yellow. There is no yellow in my home and I did not own any yellow clothes until two years ago after a medium told me I needed more yellow in my life. (Blogged HERE […]

When Feathers and Silk Call Your Name

This was supposed to be a post about a large scale print wrap-skirt. I walked into the Mood Fabrics LA store with a vintage, peacock-printed, maxi-wrap skirt in hand. I was intent on finding a large scale print to make myself a new wrap skirt and I needed the vintage one to estimate the yardage needed—depending on the width, it was looking like 5-6 yards.  Nian (like Diane with an “N”) offered to help me find what I was looking for. On our way to the printed fabrics that can stand the wear and tear of a summer with four […]

Bitten Again by the Ruffle Bug

While sewing my casual knits the ruffles were calling my name, and I answered. The craving to sew ruffles was stronger than any craving I’ve ever had for chocolate, but I tried to be practical and made an all-purpose white shirt. Of course it’s all-purpose! Mood Fabric’s Ivory Solid Goes with Everything Silk really does go with everything in my closet! It’s perfect with my re-fashioned floral pants…. party ready with my celebration skirt…. and very practical when combined with jeans for a walk in the park. That’s right – if Kate Spade wears silk to the flea market then […]

lace + silk chiffon: criminal minds

I’m going to call this my Project Runway make, because I finished it in the four hours I had free Sunday. Down-to-the-wire sewing is of course de riguer on that jammy, and if season 8 is any indicator, peeps are constantly choosing silk chiffon. Much to Michael Kors dismay. That was my weapon of choice to pair with this chartreuse cotton lace, for one of my hopefully two (!) March Lace makes. Both fabrics are deliciously drapey, and this is my first time working with either! That also seems to be a recurring them on le PR…much, again, to The […]
