Green Embroidered Wool Skirt

I found this interesting wool on Mood Fabrics’ website by searching the word “sequins”. Wool, sequins, embroidery, and flowers in yellow? That’s definitely my kind of fabric. I knew it was wide with a sequined border on both edges, so I only got a yard thinking I would make some sort of skirt. Making my TNT straight skirt seemed too boring, so I went looking for a pattern where I could use the sequined border in a more interesting manner. Enter this OOP Tracy Reese pattern, Vogue 1092. I always gravitate to unusual designs and absolutely loved the way this […]

Dark olive cowl-neck silk blouse

Here’s the latest installment for my silk blouse collection, this time with short sleeves. The fabric is a lovely dark olive silk charmeuse – now sold out – but Mood has lots of other prints and colorways. To add interest I used the shiny side for the front and the matte side for the back, back collar and sleeves. The pattern is Vogue 9006, view B. I made a straight size 12 and cut 2″ off the hemline of the pattern pieces before cutting out my fabric. The back and back collar were cut on the straight grain instead of […]

Silk Summer Tanks Times Three

My Mood Sewing Network projects this month are all about fabric pairings.  It started with finding this Anna Sui silk crepe de chine panel print at Mood Fabrics online.  I thought it would pair nicely with some of the Mood Mark Jacobs embroidered dot silk I had left over from this shirtdress project, a garment which has mostly languished in the back of my closet. I’ve always wanted to make something I’d wear more often with the left over fabric since those raised dots are so fun!  An easy summer tank seemed just the thing, and the free By Hand London Polly Top was […]

Silk Charmeuse Cami with wow-factor back

For a simple looking top, this took me a loooonnnng time. However it was an interesting sewing journey and I’ve learnt a lot more about silk! Silk charmeuse is a fabric that demands careful handling and thoughtful sewing – and packs a punch when you finish. It’s worth every minute. I had originally planned to sew a long, draped evening dress with this lovely amethyst solid silk charmeuse  but I decided that I might appear to be drowning in a purple tidal wave so I decided to sew a shorter dress. I spent eight hours sewing the lined bodice and even […]

Wool and Leather Coat

Hi Ya’ll! I’m very excited to show you my newest make for the Mood Sewing Network! I know everyone is clamoring for spring, and the last thing you want to look at is another reminder that it’s still, alas, winter, but bear with me here because I’m really excited about this coat!   I actually spotted and fell in love with this Oscar de la Renta wool coating from Mood Fabrics’ online store before I became a Mood Sewing Network blogger.  It’s basically my dream coat fabric. It’s double faced, so it has a gorgeous weight to it, and it’s plenty […]

Peter Pan Collar Silk Charmeuse Blouse

Can y’all stand another silk blouse? I made this one using Mood Fabric’s stone stretch silk charmeuse. Originally I picked this fabric to use for a nightgown with some other pretty brown lace. This must have been before I wised to the practice of ordering swatches because the browns didn’t match. I thought it would make a great neutral blouse for my wardrobe and it really does go with a number of other garments. This was my first time using silk charmeuse with stretch and I love the ease of movement. I used the matte side for the body of […]

Black and White Wool Plaid Coat

It’s been a couple of months in the making, but I’m happy to finally announce that my plaid coat is finally finished! Making this coat was truly a labor of love. I chose to fully tailor the coat, which definitely added to the time and expense involved, but it also just makes the coat feel so much more substantial and nice. This is a piece I see myself wearing for years – it’s made to last that long, anyway! 🙂 My pattern, a vintage Vogue pattern from the 70s, included everything I needed in the instructions to get the coat […]

A Silk Dress for Peter’s Cousin Cathy

For my second post this month I decided to make something completely different: a Forties day dress for my “identical cousin” Cathy Lane.  (I’ll finish my gray suit next month — promise.) At Mood I found the most gorgeous silk charmeuse with what look like parrot tulips in orange tones set against a background of deep purplish-blue — a very Forties-style print and palette. Editor’s note: We have loads of floral silk charmeuses online and in our two stores. Here’s a pretty blue-and-green stretch silk charmeuse. I chose this wonderful WWII-era Simplicity pattern from my pattern stash: a simple day dress […]

The “Oona Made Me Do It!” Top

Friends. The internet is a dangerous and scary place. One minute you’re innocently setting up a Twitter account, and the next you’re accepting dares from a madwoman! BE VERY, VERY CAREFUL.  #Sewingdares spread like wildfire! Obviously, I’m no sissy, so I immediately agreed to this dare and headed off to Mood with Oona!  She pulled out bolt after bolt and wrapped me in vibrant colors and prints from head to toe. It was a difficult decision, but, like the loose cannon she is, that girl decided at the last minute to up the ante and dare me to use TWO […]
