Italian Jersey Floral Maxi (Maternity) Dress

Hello, Mood Fabrics! It’s been a few months since I’ve blogged for the Mood Sewing Network, thanks to some big events in my life. We’ve been dealing with job changes, a potential international move, and–oh yeah–a wee little person due in September. Not only have all the changes (and the pregnancy symptoms!) kept me away from my sewing machine, but sewing for a rapidly growing bump has proved daunting. For the first few months, maternity clothes were way too big, but all of my woven dresses quickly became uncomfortable. Since February, I’ve been living in knit dresses, like the Colette […]

A Sequined Mermaid Costume for Halloween

Though I haven’t been able to make much time to sew lately, I was very motivated to make my two-year-old daughter a mermaid costume for Halloween this year. I can’t remember now whether the idea for the mermaid costume came from her or me. But, as soon as it was out there, I couldn’t let it go. I found myself excitedly scouring Mood Fabrics for fabrics that could be used to create something inspired by Disney’s The Little  Mermaid. I ended up choosing a green and blue sequins for the tail and a dark aqua silk jersey for the tail’s lining, the latter so that the inside of the tail would be soft […]

An Unexpected Ensemble

To be quite honest, I think sewing is making me more stubborn, yet, more patient. Both pieces in this combo were intended as something completely different than their outcome. First up, the jeans jacket, which was meant to be a peplumed affair, Simplicity 1919. I was ever so patient with this jacket, so patient my hands literally turned blue (oh, yeah, the dye on this one is strong. It’s sold out now, be grateful– but there’s a heap of Ralph Lauren denim just in). I fitted, I pressed… I changed thread colors, I topstitched with care… AND THEN RIPPED OUT AN ENTIRE FULLY LINED, CLIPPED, GRADED, TOPSTITCHED, […]

Mixed Blue Abstract Rayon Jersey and My Favorite Maxi Dress M6700

Changing up on the print is good sometimes.  So instead of my favorite print (floral), I chose this great geometric rayon jersey.  I wanted a quick, easy cute dress to wear to the Toni Braxton concert. My all time favorite, a McCall super easy and super cute maxi dress.  I made it twice before and thought it would be the perfect match for this awesome jersey print.  This dress takes about two hours to make.  My previous reviews are here and here. It’s 54 inches wide.  I ordered only three yards, not enough for a belt.  So I wore a […]

A Coral and Floral Draped-Back Top

I’ve been craving more easy pieces in my wardrobe lately. I would just love a closet full of pieces that can be effortlessly thrown together into outfits in the morning. I try really hard not to live in running clothes day in and day out, but some days I only have about five seconds to get ready.  It would be so nice to really only need those five seconds… because I love wearing everything in my closet and because so many things work well together. I started towards this goal a few months ago by de-cluttering and giving away a whole bunch of things I […]

Cozy, Woolly Separates

Who doesn’t love to wear wool in the winter time? I feel like a broken record when I start singing the praises of wool, but foreal you guys—this stuff is awesome. It’s super warm and cozy, breathes very well (so you don’t get overheated in all that warm and cozy-ness), and it’s also antimicrobial, which means it naturally repels odors. Which means now you know why I wear so much wool and still manage to keep up with the laundry – it doesn’t need to be washed very frequently! Airing out is fine for day-to-day. Yay for being lazy! So […]

Rayon Jersey Print Wrap Dress

Greetings from Botany Bay, one of South Carolina’s barrier islands featuring a hauntingly beautiful boneyard beach. I’ve made my first See & Sew pattern in this fun Lycra/rayon jersey print from Mood Fabrics. I’ve said I’ll never buy another wrap dress. I’ll never buy another faux wrap dress either. I considered sewing my jersey with Vogue 1314 for some time. I even went as far as to lay out the pattern and fabric, but the practicality of the Butterick 5873 won out over high fashion 😉 Is there a better pattern – fabric combination for everyday wear? No wrinkles, no […]

Men’s Rayon Knit Tee and Linen Shorts

This month has been all about making summer clothes for my partner, Michael.  (I think it’s time to sew for me again soon!) When Michael and I visited Mood Fabrics together last month, in addition to the coral eyelet I used for a shirt (posted last week), Michael chose a lightweight, stretchy, rayon knit with a subtle floral print, and a rich, terra cotta-colored linen.  I decided to make a v-neck t-shirt with the rayon knit and short pants with the linen. Since the rayon knit was so lightweight, I also picked up half a yard of a sturdy cotton […]

Bold Stripes Jersey Dress

My plan was for a simple knit dress that would be comfortable and cool for an outdoor wedding and I found just the right fabric for a bold and bright dress.  My choice was Mood Fabrics’ Multicolor Stripe Rayon Jersey. I knew I wanted to use McCall’s 6752, the same pattern from my stripe knit top from my last Mood Sewing Network Post.  The description  of this fabric on Mood Fabric’s website states “this lightweight jersey would make a stunning top or pullover dress. ”  After reading this, I knew I had the perfect fabric in my cart. The fabric is a […]
