Fuschsia Wool Ponte Dress

Ponte knit is a well known and much loved fabric amongst the sewers of the world. It’s beefy and stable qualities make it a great option for body-con dresses and structured designs. I’ve sewn with my fair share of it over the years and, as with most fabrics, there is a spectrum of quality available. When I spotted this “fuchsia rose wool ponte knit” on Mood Fabric’s website some months ago, I snapped it up faster then lightning. I adore natural fibers and was positive that a ponte knit made from wool would be heaven to work with. Unfortunately many […]

Blue and White Cotton Skirt with Pop of Red Top

Recently, Mike (the hubby) and I were heading to a casual event and I went to grab a summer skirt to wear.   It seemed like the perfect separate for  the weather and with a cute top, I would be neither over or under dressed.  Now you are probably guessing where this is going, yes, you are right.  I had no cute summer skirt.  This seems so not right, sewing skirts is a fun and quick project, right?   I went with Burda 6904, a pattern I have been wanting to make for quite some time.  The fabric is the […]

Black Pants in Embossed Knit

Y’all, I’ve made some pants.   Big deal, right? I’ll bet you make pants all the time. You’re a wizard at crotch curves and the fish-eye dart and all the pants making things. Yeah. Well, in all the almost 7 years I’ve been blogging (!!!) I think I’ve made one pair of pants and one pair of knee-length crops. Oh and a pair of shorts or two. I’m not scared of them per say, it’s just that I’m more interested in making things that I can’t afford to buy or can’t find to fit me very well. Pants I can […]

A Comfy Knit Skirt For This Preggo Girl

All the maternity skirts currently available for sale fall into three categories: black/navy/gray, denim or striped maxi. If you want any type of bright color or pattern, you are out of luck. Or, if you know how to sew, you make your own! It was pretty much love at first site when I spotted this Theory yellow striped ponte at Mood Fabrics. It’s yellow, is a ponte knit which is the perfect weight fabric for a skirt, and it’s visually interesting with the stripes. I paired it with Burda 7023, labeled “super easy”, and that was no lie. It only […]

A Manly Striped Sweater

I don’t tend to do much sewing when it comes to men’s clothing, much to my boyfriend’s disappointment. Not really sure what my hang-up is —every time I find myself working on the odd piece of clothing for him, I am reminded of how much I actually enjoy doing this type of stuff. Not a lot of fit issues, frills, or funky patterns. Just simple and straightforward and… safe. Since I average about one piece of clothing per year for my dude, I reckon it’s time to share for 2013—a striped sweater, in a very manly wool knit. We found […]

Sneaky Silk+Ponte Dress

I am calling this the sneaky dress because it looks like it should be separates, but it’s not! It’s actually one piece! I LOVE these kinds of dresses! Looks like a silk blouse with a high-waisted pencil skirt, without the bother of keeping a shirt tucked in all day and making sure things match in the morning (because, ew, all I wanna do is sleep right now). The pattern I used for this dress is the Sugar Plum by Lolita Patterns. Since it doesn’t require a lot of fabric to make up the top half (less than a yard!), I splurged […]

Cozy Plaid Flannel, Yeah!

I’ve always loved the plaid flannel shirts that everyone wears when the temperatures start dropping, but the selection (at least where I live) has pretty much hovered around disappointing. Ugly plaids, strange fiber contents, weird boxy fits—do not want! Which is why I took the initiative and made my own. LIKE A BOSS! Seriously, though, have you seen the cotton flannels at Mood Fabrics lately? The red and black check I’m rocking here actually comes in five different colors—I mean, what better excuse do you need to wrap yourself in a cozy plaid cloud? Bonus—the loft of this fabric makes […]

Cheetah-Print Ponte Party!

Since joining the Mood Sewing Network, I’ve really enjoyed sewing with new-to-me types of fabrics.  It’s really pushed me to develop my skills and do more research before I cut into a new fabric.  Today, however, I’m revisiting a fabric type that I used once before to make a garment that was an irreconcilable failure… ponte! I’ve never purchased or really seen garments made out of ponte, but once I started reading rave reviews of it, I was curious!  So about a year ago, I picked out a gorgeous black ponte from Mood and admired its heft and drape before […]

The Wild Side of Butterick 5078

Confession: This is my first crack at trying out ponte knit. Can you believe it?! During one of my fabric sprees in New York last month, Carolyn diverted my attention over to the ponte knit aisle and strongly encouraged me to bring a couple of yards home to play with. I was a little unsure at first (ponte just seems like it should be like that extra thick, extra hot polyester from the early days, yeah?), but I spied leopard print and decided to trust her judgement call. Lesson learned: trust Carolyn’s judgement. This stuff is NOTHING like the knitwear […]
