To Trim or Not To Trim?

Summer clothes are sew much fun to sew, I will make them until the end of the season. While writing The Tunic Bible, I developed a new appreciation, perhaps an obsession for working with trims. Using the ‘right’ trim whether it’s inexpensive twill tape or an ornate appliqué, easily transforms a garment from plain to sensational. Mood Fabrics has it all from lace to ribbons to chains and appliqués! To transform my latest tunic in Mood Fabrics luscious fuchsia lightweight linen, I selected an this Oscar de la Renta 2″ medallion design cotton lace. It’s fabulous. When clicking on the […]

An A-Line Skirt in an Oscar de la Renta Woven

I know for a fact that my first finished garment of 2016 is going to become a very well-loved skirt, but making it was a lesson in how I should always get used to a new-to-me fabric by practicing techniques on scraps before venturing into the real deal. A lesson that, of course, I didn’t learn until I was half way through making this skirt. The new-to-me fabric is an Oscar de la Renta gray and teal cotton-rayon woven that came from Mood Fabrics. This teal color way is no longer available online, but the black-and-white color way still is. It’s […]

A Bright Winter Ensemble

Yeah, I know. I kind of went Sgt Pepper’s on these photos. January will do that to me. Lack of light, lack of warmth, lack of photographer. The trifecta. But let’s play Where’s Waldo and find my garment in this riotous, ham handed, amateur photoshopped collage! Can you find the rectangle of sweater knit above? That’s my “self drafted” H&M knockoff, made with some famous designer novelty knit (similar here). I succumbed to Black Friday and bought a couple of drapey sweaters at The Beast, and upon further perusal, found they were really two large rectangles with two small rectangles […]

Oscar de la Renta Chiffon Dress

When I first joined the Mood Sewing Network one of the things that excited me most was having a wide variety of beautiful fabrics I’d never used before at my fingertips. I’ve really tried to challenge myself to sew with new and slightly trickier fabrics this year; so this month I decided to take the plunge and try one of the most infamously tricky fabrics to handle and gave in to my urge to snap up some of this stunning printed silk chiffon from Oscar de la Renta. I probably should have picked a slightly more straightforward garment for my […]

Wool and Leather Coat

Hi Ya’ll! I’m very excited to show you my newest make for the Mood Sewing Network! I know everyone is clamoring for spring, and the last thing you want to look at is another reminder that it’s still, alas, winter, but bear with me here because I’m really excited about this coat!   I actually spotted and fell in love with this Oscar de la Renta wool coating from Mood Fabrics’ online store before I became a Mood Sewing Network blogger.  It’s basically my dream coat fabric. It’s double faced, so it has a gorgeous weight to it, and it’s plenty […]

Silk Faille Oscar de la Renta Sheath Dress

Good morning, Mood Fabrics! I’m thrilled to join the ranks of the Mood Sewing Network, which I’ve long been a fan and reader of. Thank you so much to Meg for inviting me on board! For my first Mood Sewing Network project, I was led by pure, unadulterated fabric lust. This gorgeous silk faille, designed by Oscar de la Renta and available in Mood’s online store, sent me swooning. Check out those flowers! Don’t they look straight out of a tropical garden? Considering the dreadful winter we’ve been having in Texas, a (sartorial) trip to the tropics was too tempting […]

Sneaky Silk+Ponte Dress

I am calling this the sneaky dress because it looks like it should be separates, but it’s not! It’s actually one piece! I LOVE these kinds of dresses! Looks like a silk blouse with a high-waisted pencil skirt, without the bother of keeping a shirt tucked in all day and making sure things match in the morning (because, ew, all I wanna do is sleep right now). The pattern I used for this dress is the Sugar Plum by Lolita Patterns. Since it doesn’t require a lot of fabric to make up the top half (less than a yard!), I splurged […]

Oscar de la Renta Bouclé Jacket with Leather Trim

The navy and black color combo is currently a very popular trend. Even though I still think you shouldn’t wear black shoes with a navy dress, I do like them together in fabrics or colorblocked. Which is why, when I spotted this black and almost-navy plaid boucle at Mood Fabrics, I knew I wanted it for something. It’s Oscar de la Renta fabric with metallic threads and tiny black sequins, and reminds me somewhat of the fabric used for this dress – also OdlR, and also with sequins. I decided on jacket 106 from the February 2013 Burda issue, but […]

Oscar de la Renta Silk Print Skirt

So this skirt, guys this skirt! It turned out so much better than I thought it would. It was definitely an experiment in more ways, than one so I was not expecting that. Experiment #1, working with this Oscar de la Renta silk twill fabric from Mood Fabrics. Man, I was up and down about this silk. One day I loved it, the next day I thought it was too attention-grabbing, the next, well you get the deal. Fortunately the end result I LOVE. I guess it was just one of those fabrics that makes you second guess yourself during the […]
