Plaid Flannel Archer Shirts

For  me a winter wardrobe staple is a plaid flannel shirt and I was in need of a new one.  I went with Mood Fabrics’ Maroon/Gray Tartan Plaid Cotton Flannel and it is such a nice weight for these twenty degree days.  My go-to shirt pattern is the Grainline Archer Shirt, which I have made many times including two on another Mood Sewing Network post.   One thing I really like about using plaid is the fun you can have with the bias.  On my plaid flannels I use the yoke, front button band, cuffs and pockets are […]

Maxi Skirt Season

From Thanksgiving right up until I take the tree down, at all family gatherings, it’s maxi skirt, simple top, statement jewelry, swan mode on. AND I MEAN FULL SWAN. It’s just instantly dressy with zero effort! And all of the room for food! When I saw this bolt at Mood Fabrics (in store), my eyes popped. Christmas maxi, for sure. My fingers screamed as I ran my hands over its pure poly texture, and I howled with laughter. (To be honest, I’ve lost track of the content, but surely there’s some poly happening here.) And this green goodness is the […]

Rayon-Silk Bomber Jacket for the Holidays

I love the look of a bomber jacket and started thinking about fabric and something for the holidays.  My thoughts lead to the hot fabric right now, velvet and I headed right over to Pinterest for ideas.  I was on track as I saw several velvet bomber jackets and I knew I had my Christmas look.  My fabric is Mood Fabrics Sultan Red Soft Rayon-Silk Velvet, which is available in 7 more colors.    The pattern I went with was McCall’s 7100, which is an easy to sew pattern but the velvet did provide the challenges.     […]

Ralph Lauren Blue Nights Stretch Denim In Body Hugging Ginger Jeans

What better way to show off your body hugging Ginger jeans than a day at the Art History Museum of Chicago to see the Mainbocher Exhibit.   The Haute Couture Club of Chicago field trip took place of December 4th where several club members showed off their Ginger jeans. I was happily sporting my new pair made with Ralph Lauren blue nights stretch denim from Mood Fabrics.  I ordered five yards, enough for two pair and than some.  This is a great denim to work with.  It has just the right amount of stretch for a great fitting pair of […]

A Silk Crepe De Chine Topper

The Holiday Lights are up on our block! I believe this is what I’m enchanted by, but it’s anyone’s guess. There’s no questioning the fact that this silk has me bewitched. Meet my new favorite top. Blouse? Dress? Topper? Let’s go with topper. This beautiful silk crepe de chine print came home with me on a whim, the kind of instantaneous pick you make after 60 minutes of scouring the fabric aisles. You know how it is, after all that searching and second guessing, a bolt just jumps out at you, and it’s done and dusted in 60 seconds. (If […]

Cold Shoulder Blouse in Abstract Print

The cold shoulder look is quite trendy right now and I wanted to be part of it.  Now to tell the truth I tried it once in a knit style and wasn’t thrilled with the result at all.  This time I went with  a woven blouse look.  The pattern of choice was Simplicity 8131.  This blouse calls for soft fabrics: lawn, soft cottons and crepe de chine.  Well, I had a beautiful Mood Fabrics’ crepe de chine (poly)  and thought it might be a fun look for this style.  If you want another print or a solid or […]

Polka Dot Fun

What do you do when fall doesn’t come around?  Well, I am just going to keep sewing for the temperatures.  We are fluctuating from 60 degrees to mid-80 degrees, so I pulled out  Mood Fabrics’ Navy Polka Dotted Rayon Challis and went to work on a great dress that I can wear now and later.       I went with Simplicity 8084 for the dress and I am in love with this style.  I have found regular shirtdresses do not do much for my straight figure but with the drawstring waist and the blouson-type  top, this one really works. […]

An Unexpected Ensemble

To be quite honest, I think sewing is making me more stubborn, yet, more patient. Both pieces in this combo were intended as something completely different than their outcome. First up, the jeans jacket, which was meant to be a peplumed affair, Simplicity 1919. I was ever so patient with this jacket, so patient my hands literally turned blue (oh, yeah, the dye on this one is strong. It’s sold out now, be grateful– but there’s a heap of Ralph Lauren denim just in). I fitted, I pressed… I changed thread colors, I topstitched with care… AND THEN RIPPED OUT AN ENTIRE FULLY LINED, CLIPPED, GRADED, TOPSTITCHED, […]

Transitioning to Fall In Oscar De La Renta Checkered Coat

Transitioning to Fall in Chicago can be a mixture of three seasons on any given day.  We could start with cool, crisp sunny morning.  By mid-day it’s hotter than July.  Then early evening, it’s cloudy and raining.  We are so lucky.  It’s not every day that this happens.  Most days it is one or the other.  😉     The good thing is we experience every season, which gives us opportunities to wear many different styles and weights of clothing.  I’m happy to have many coats of all weights and styles.  My new  Oscar De La Renta Checkered […]
