Oscar de la Renta Bouclé Jacket with Leather Trim

The navy and black color combo is currently a very popular trend. Even though I still think you shouldn’t wear black shoes with a navy dress, I do like them together in fabrics or colorblocked. Which is why, when I spotted this black and almost-navy plaid boucle at Mood Fabrics, I knew I wanted it for something. It’s Oscar de la Renta fabric with metallic threads and tiny black sequins, and reminds me somewhat of the fabric used for this dress – also OdlR, and also with sequins. I decided on jacket 106 from the February 2013 Burda issue, but […]

Wool Houndstooth and Leather Skirt

It’s houndstooth time! This time each year I get the craving for a houndstooth something. I’ve bought it all throughout the years, but never tire of the crisp design. This year I decided to add a twist to my houndstooth garment. I began with a wool houndstooth I bought during my first visit to Mood Fabrics in 2011, which I planned to sew using Vogue’s 8750 skirt pattern…. and ultimately decided to have some fun with both the fabric and the pattern! My mother recently gave me a $1 thrift store leather skirt, and I thought the houndstooth pattern would […]

Emerald Faux Leather Skirt

Faux leather is off the beaten path in Mood.  It’s on the third floor, way in the back, behind all of the scrumptious designer boucles.  The Saturday that I was in Mood NYC, I was back there all alone!  But the treasures, people, the treasures that are in that section are mind-blowing ~ well at least to a fabric junkie like me!  As I was pulling out bolt after bolt, I stumbled upon this goodness… …and I knew right away what it should be!  It was love at first sight, really it was! So Todd helped me get it to […]

King Of Leather

Last Tuesday, the debonair and ever entertaining Kenneth King shared his knowledge of working with leather and suede with a group of sewists at Mood’s NY locale.   What.  A. TREAT.  Leave aside the fact that I could listen to this man talk about cardboard for ninety minutes…he covered enough about this enormous topic to make us all feel like paying Dmitry in leathers a visit straight after.     I had no idea leather was so…manipulable.  Is that a word?  I don’t feel I should call it manipulative, as I don’t think it’s trying to control my […]

Finished: Leather Top

Just a quick post to show you the leather top I recently finished. Seeing all the leather on the runways and in the fashion magazines had me chomping at the bit to add some more leather to my wardrobe. For this top I took a leather/wool jersey top I made last year and was never in love with, and used the leather for the center panel (light tan). Deep burgundy leather makes up the sides, sleeves and back. I was able to sew this up rather quickly because I used a tried-and-true pattern, Cynthia Rowley Simplicity 2192, which is a […]
