Italian Jersey Floral Maxi (Maternity) Dress

Hello, Mood Fabrics! It’s been a few months since I’ve blogged for the Mood Sewing Network, thanks to some big events in my life. We’ve been dealing with job changes, a potential international move, and–oh yeah–a wee little person due in September. Not only have all the changes (and the pregnancy symptoms!) kept me away from my sewing machine, but sewing for a rapidly growing bump has proved daunting. For the first few months, maternity clothes were way too big, but all of my woven dresses quickly became uncomfortable. Since February, I’ve been living in knit dresses, like the Colette […]

Saint James Knit

Knowing I can sew a garment for a tiny fraction of the retail price simply thrills me, and is one of the reasons I continue to sew. I knew I could make the $200 Saint James Toledo striped dress I saw in a boutique in Charlotte, but I didn’t know that Mood Fabrics stocked Saint James knits ~ the very same fabrics! Upon finding Burda 6722, I knew it was meant to be. Mood offers the Saint James ponte knits in several colors, and I chose the white background with black stripes. I rarely sew Burda patterns (no reason in particular) […]

A Raspberry Floral Sundress

There are some fabrics you have to buy. They scream your name from across a store (or website, in this case), demanding that you take them home and turn them into a garment that is perfectly you. Y’all, this Very Berry Floral Cotton from Mood Fabrics is that fabric, for me. I mean, just look at it! It’s brightly colored, full of swishy body, and covered in flowers. This light, airy cotton is deeply feminine, but still very grown-up, thanks to the watercolor quality of the flowers. This is fabric love, y’all. So, of course, I turned it into a […]

A Tropical Chambray Dress for Spring

Good evening, friends! Spring has finally arrived in Texas and with it have come my longings for flirty, feminine pastel dresses. Suddenly, all I want to wear are candy colored dresses with sweet, unexpected details. You wouldn’t believe the number of ridiculously frilly Anthropologie numbers I’ve pinned lately. To quench this sartorial impulse, I ordered a length of gorgeous chambray from Mood Fabrics, in the “Paradise Pink Orange” colorway. Believe the description, kittens. In person, this chambray is a very tropical color–bright pink yarn mixing with white for a perfect flamingo color. Maybe it’s my Florida roots speaking, but I […]

The Greener Side of Summer Dress

Good morning, friends!  Lately, I’ve been in a sewing rut. Or, rather: a blissful, completely intentional bout of sewing the same pattern eight million times. McCall’s 6696 is my platonic shirtdress and I can’t stop making new versions! It has everything I’ve long searched for in a shirtdress, including a properly constructed collar, separate waistband, and full skirt. Even better, it’s explicitly designed to be made in light, embroidered fabrics like eyelet and Swiss dot. After perfecting the fit on two sturdy versions, I gave into the temptation of an ethereal late summer dress and perused the embroidered section of […]

Comfortable Summer Color-Blocking

Good afternoon, everyone! It’s officially summer down here in Texas — temperatures blazing above 90 degrees and heavy thunderstorms brewing across the state. Even better, school is out for a few months! Since most of my break will be spent putting the finishing touches on my dissertation, I opted for comfort with this month’s Mood Sewing Network piece. A comfortable, classic knit dress sounded heavenly! Luckily, Mood Fabrics has the most divine selection of cotton jerseys. Seeing as this dress was going to be a simple silhouette, I opted to mix things up with my fabric choice. Instead of going […]

Designer Menswear Fabric for a Little Girl’s Dress

The menswear suitings call to me from the the pages of the Mood Designer Fabrics website.  All the houndstooth, herringbone and plaid patterns make me giddy even though I have no plans to make a men’s suit anytime soon. Gray Herringbone Suiting, Plum plaid Suiting, Beige Plaid Suiting, and a Khaki Houndstooth all made it to the final cut and I knew a little girl’s dress was the project to make. I settled on this Ralph Lauren wool houndstooth suiting sight unseen (which had me a little worried since I’m such a tactile fabric purchaser) along with a few […]
