Take One – Two Sides, Please

Fall time which means I can make a new coat, I love making coats!  I was looking through Mood’s site and found this incredible fabric.  It is Mood Fabrics’ Tan and Gray Printed Cotton Twill with Navy Reverse Face  and it is such great fabric, it deserves a long name. This fabric intrigued me right away and while I was waiting for it arrive, I started dreaming of what to sew.  I decided a statement coat, which seems to be trendy in RTW, a bit like this one.  After I have an idea, it is time for a pattern, […]

A Ladylike Skirt in stretch cotton polka dot twill

I had an urge to make a ‘ladylike’ skirt nothing too fancy, just a feminine everyday skirt. I’m typically a jeans & tee person – or long, long maxi skirts and dresses. However they don’t always suit the event, company, location or weather. I fell in love with the denim tones of this cotton stretch twill from Mood Fabrics NY. I thought if I can’t wear jeans I might as well embraced the colour scheme! Unfortunately this shade of fabric has sold out however the beauty of Mood Fabrics is that there is a seemingly endless array of fabrics and still […]

Comfy Weekend Casual with Viscose Jersey and Cotton Twill

I guess by now you can tell that I love Mood’s selection of twill.  They come in a variety of fibers, colors, and weights.  They sew like a dream and are perfect for pants, jackets, dresses and skirts. I’m still working on beefing up the ole weekend casual wardrobe.  So I chose Steven Alan medal  cotton-lcyra twill for a relaxed pair of pants (Butterick 6028).  This fabric has a soft hand similar to linen with less wrinkles. I paired the brown abstract Missoni-esque jersey print for another version of Simplicity 1317.   Let me start with the review of Simplicity […]

Embroidered Silk Blouse and Twill Wrap Skirt

For this month’s Mood Sewing Network project I worked with two very different fabrics to make separates. First up is the blouse, for which I used this Marc Jacobs Silk with Embroidered Dots which I’ve had my eye on for months! It’s a beautiful silk crepe and when you get close up you realise the polka dots are actually formed of dense embroidery making it wonderfully unique. I was a little apprehensive about working with a fabric which sounded like it could be quite tricky, especially for a project with some fiddly aspects, but I took my time and had […]

Twill and Flannel Anorak

Brrrrrr! Readers, it’s cold out here! I’m no fan of winter weather, but I AM a fan of outerwear, so at least the silver lining of this week’s snowfall is that I get to road-test my new jacket! I’ve really been digging the trend of slouchy anoraks that all the cool Brooklyn babes seem to be wearing lately, so I was excited to recreate the look myself. The ubiquitous olive green doesn’t do me any favors, so I opted for a nice medium gray cotton twill from Mood Fabrics NYC (these beautiful organic twills are favorites of mine– I’ve used several colorways for […]

Menswear Recipe for October: Gingham, Gray, and a Dash of Mustard

What do black and white cotton gingham, gray wool sweater knit, and mustard cotton twill have in common? Nothing — until I sewed them into a fall combo I love! After last month’s houndstooth success, I knew I wanted to try my hand once again with sweater knits.  I love this soft gray rib knit I found at Mood Fabrics NYC, which I was able to use for both the body of my sweater as well as the neck, arm, and waistbands. Editor’s note: We hope to have this exact gray rib knit available online very soon, but in the […]

Men’s Fitted Fashion for Fall

It is still hot and humid outside, but I’m in fall sewing mode. This month I wanted to make some basics that could carry me into cooler weather, and at Mood Fabrics I found soft and silky cotton shirting in a rich tan, as well as a great bottom-weight navy cotton twill (Sorry about the pet hair — I live with two dogs). Note: MoodFabrics.com has a ton of new cotton shirtings, as do our two stores, and here are some great cotton twills. I love earth tones for fall, and cocoa is a favorite shade.  I decided to make […]

Oscar de la Renta Summer Dress

Top Ten Reasons To Sew Another Summer Dress 10. The last one was too big. 9. I’m eager to make another muslin. 8. Too hot to wear anything else. 7. I’m on a quest to perfect the hand-picked zipper technique. 6. No buttons or buttonholes to sew. 5. Fabric requirement almost the same as a top. 4. Slim silhouette makes me look taller. 3. Cleaned out closet and the emptiness is disturbing. 2. Need something new to wear for my 30th wedding anniversary tomorrow. (You read that correctly.) And the number one reason to sew another dress ……………… I […]

Red and Seafoam for Spring

I know it’s only February, but try telling that to my spring fever! GAH can it go ahead and get warm here already!? Since I can’t control the weather (something I’m still waiting patiently for, as well as for my own Hoverboard and Jaws 19), I can at least get a head start on pulling my warm-weather wardrobe together, yeah? Before you accuse me of shamelessly ripping off Lori’s red pants, I’ve actually had these planned for a couple of months. Lori just beat me to the punch, and of course hers look better (which is NOT FAIR). Figures! The […]
