Striped Jersey Dress

Summer is a busy time for me and I still want to sew or should I say I need to sew.  Sewing is a passion and when I cannot get to my sewing room, I get a little grumpy!  Anyone else like that?  That being said I have a conflict in the summer besides time.  It is the great outdoors, well, really just my yard.  I love to work in my flowers and be in the pool.  To keep from being grumpy from lack of sewing, my solution is faster projects and fabulous fabrics.  I fell in love with this […]

Sleeveless Striped Metallic Knit Top

After last month’s complex Easter dress, I decided to keep it simple for April and make a knit top in a pattern I’ve used before with good results. The pattern is Jalie 2921. I used Mood Fabric’s oyster/brown gray metallic striped cotton jersey knit. A couple months ago I’d bought a cut of it along with its matching larger stripe for a different knit top, but the project bombed. However, I liked the fabric so much that I got another 1.5 yards and went for a garment I knew would turn out. Since I wanted more of a casual look […]

Rosy Fall Cowl

I started planning my next Mood Sewing Network make back in August. I picked out one of Mood’s fun Liberty of London prints. I downloaded a pattern for a cute, sleeveless BurdaStyle dress. I printed the pattern out and taped it together.  I cut out my size and made a few flat-pattern adjustments. Then, just as I was getting ready to make a muslin, the weather shifted here in Seattle and fall appeared. With the chill in the air, I lost all motivation to make a cute summer dress. Instead I wanted something cozy. While I stalled, debating whether a project counts as an unfinished object (UFO) […]

Two Simple Knit Dresses for Fall

As much as I looove working with beautiful fabrics that require special handling and specific sewing rules, sometimes a girl just needs a simple knit dress to throw on when she wants to look classy but feel she’s wearing pajamas. Fortunately for me, Mood Fabrics has an incredible assortment of knits, from lightweight cotton to cozy wool. A little bit of everything, I like that! So obviously, I made two because one CLEARLY is not enough. I used the Lady Skater pattern from Kitschycoo for both dresses—this is a great basic knit dress, easy to customize by just changing up the fabric. […]

Ombre Striped Jersey Dress

I’ve wanted to make this dress ever since I first started seeing Marcy Tilton’s shingle dress (Vogue V8904) pop up around the sewing blogging world. I had my heart set on making it out of stripes since I loved the way the design of the pattern made them play this way and that. Then, Goodbye Valentino made the exact dress I’d been dreaming of for her July MSN make out of a navy and white striped cotton jersey (the same one I used for the bottom layer, which no longer appears to be available online at Mood Fabrics). I figured […]

The End of Summer White Maxi Dress

This pattern has been on my “To Sew” list since last year.  I was determined to get it made this season.  And I did, in the nick of time! < This pattern is Vogue 1305.  And it’s a designer one — Lialia by Julia Alarcon.  She was also profiled on “All on the Line with Joe Zee” last season. The description of this dress is as follows: semi-fitted, lined, pullover dress (fitted through hips) has draped right side extending into sleeve, left side slit, shoulder opening, and back opening with button/loop. Note: shoulder opening can be worn as neck opening. I […]

Cotton Jersey Layers Dress

Recently on Facebook, Mood Fabrics posed the following question to its readers: When do you put aside summer sewing and move onto fall and winter apparel? Is July too soon to think about cool-weather clothes? I must admit I have actually begun to think about my Fall wardrobe in July for the first time ever. I have even begun to look at Fall Runway shows on Style.com and even started a Mood Fall board, but……… hasn’t summer just begun? I may develop the discipline to sew a season ahead one day, but for now I’m sewing in the moment. As […]

Nautical Crop Top with High Waisted Shorts

Mikaela made the special request for a crop top and high waisted shorts. She specifically said she wanted the shorts to be striped and I said, why not make a matching top.  Suit dressing is popular this season. I remembered the perfect fabric from Mood Fabrics and I knew it would be what she wanted.  This fabric is Nautical Double-Faced Cotton-blend Jersey.  The fabric is really easy to work with.  It doesn’t have a lot of stretch, so I would probably use it for garments that don’t require a lot of recovery… preferably things that could also be made in […]

Summertime Calls for Knit Tops: Three New Ones for Me!

A staple of my summer wardrobe is knit tops, but I try to change it up a bit with them.  If I am using a staple fabric, then I like to use a unusual knit top pattern, but if the fabric is fabulous on its own then I try to use a more basic pattern to showcase the fabric.  It was hard to decide which knits to pick from Mood Fabrics extensive online selection but don’t worry, I was able to make three choices and add several more to my portfolio for future purchases.  Some criteria for my knit tops: […]
