Two More Tops Before Summer Fades

Summer is winding down and my thoughts are turning toward fall sewing.  I am not ready to give up summer all together, after all it is still 90+ degrees here in Missouri, but I am ready for sewing something different. I spotted this fabric right when it was added—Mood Fabrics’ Italian Teal and Black Lacy Brocade—and I had to have it. It is so gorgeous and my thoughts were a simple Grainline Scout T-shirt, that way the fabric does all the talking. Another plus was the fabric description from Mood’s site, “Has a soft hand and graceful drape, almost like […]

Italian Brocade Sheath Dress

About this time last year, Mood fabrics got in a wide array of Italian brocades with raised floral imprints. They were divine and I had a really hard time picking the exact one I wanted. Eventually I settled on this one in aqua with red, yellow and navy color accents. It looks like an abstract painting and the red bits look a little like dripping blood. It’s so interesting and unusual. Then, because I loved it so much, it sat around in my to-do pile before I could finally muster up the courage to cut into it. Unfortunately, after all […]

Damask Brocade Skirt

Shirt: Gap    Shoes: Madewell Inspired by this lovely skirt, I decided to make a similar one using Melissa Esplin’s box-pleat skirt tutorial. She literally posted this the DAY I was starting on the skirt so that made my life about 10x easier. I like to think that it’s because we’re on the same wavelength but well, it’s Melissa Esplin, so let’s not get carried away here. Haha, I was really thankful for the tutorial, though. (Thanks Melissa!) It was super simple to follow and I didn’t change anything except that I made my pleats a little closer together. (3″ instead of […]

Blue-Green Emerald Brocade Dress

Ok so can I just say that I am so incredibly happy that this dress turned out. The entire time I was making it I kept thinking to myself “what the heck am I doing.” Haha, I’m just not used to using such thick fabric for dresses so I was not expecting it to work. Turns out I was wrong because I love it! I actually think it might be one of my favorite dresses I’ve made so far. I love the brocade; because it makes the dress look so much more professional looking or something. I’m not really sure why […]

Carolina Herrera Brocade Dress

When I first laid eyes on this brocade at Mood, I thought it was very striking but had no idea what to do with it. I didn’t want an entire dress made from it because that would be too fancy for my lifestyle. While perusing some design magazines on vacation, I ran across a dress with a bunch of folds around the neckline that I wanted to copy, but then couldn’t find the right pattern in my stash. Enter this Simplicity Cynthia Rowley pattern. It had the fitted bodice that I find most flattering on my small bust, and the […]

Brocade Pants

“One of the advantages of being disorderly is that one is constantly making exciting discoveries.” A. A. Milne Had I known organizing my sewing room would result in a two week hiatus from sewing AND blogging, I bet I would still be in the midst of a huge mess declaring I couldn’t take the time needed to bring order and modest aesthetic appeal to my cluttered space. I reached a good stopping point and expect to finish up over the next few weeks with pictures forthcoming. At last I can sew in a pleasant surroundings! Last year I made five […]

Silk Brocade Quilted Jacket

Where do you look for inspiration when you create your garments? If you’re like me you look to the runway each season, to see what ideas you can borrow or knock off. I loved, loved, loved Proenza Schouler’s Fall 2012 collection, maybe because it relied heavily on brocade (and you know what a brocade addict I am). I already had some orange silk brocade from Mood NYC in my stash as a starting point, and I knew I wanted to make a quilted jacket. One of McCalls’ newer patterns, 6644, was designed to be used for quilted fabrics and I […]

A Simple Design Paired with Fabulous Fabric and Trim

Whew, what a week this was here on the East Coast. Guess you heard about the storm that ripped through the area. Grrrr. Good thing I don’t have any friends named Sandy. My neighborhood looks like it was chewed up and spit out by some tree-hating monster. And I had no idea how much I LOVE electricity. Today is Day 4 without it and the family’s nerves are fraying. I spent two days hand-sewing trim on a jacket during the daytime, listening to the news on a crank radio; yesterday trains were running again so I was able to come […]

Carolina Herrera Brocade Jacket

I sure have missed my blogging friends! I have been so eager to post anything just to say hello while I was taking care of a patient, hosting a party at my home followed by entertaining out-of-town company immediately upon returning from our unforgettable vacation to the Mediterranean. The patient is fine, the party was fun, the company found its way to a football game in Florida, and I hit the sewing machine after a four-week break. I imagined this beautiful brocade from Mood Fabrics as numerous garments: My husband suggested I make a close-fitting special occasion dress which […]
