My favorite food is pizza.  I try to eat it once a week. I don’t even think of denying myself this pleasure. So when I questioned myself on choosing to work with another Supreme Wax fabric, I gave myself this theory: PIZZA IS GOOD. WAX PRINT IS GOOD. YOU SHOULD THEREFORE HAVE BOTH WHENEVER YOU WANT THEM. That’s solid theorizing. With 6 yards of fabric in a cut, and summer sewing in full force, I went for maxi proportions. Cynthia Rowley for Simplicity 1802 (out of print, I think), was the object of my desire. Or the vehicle for? I […]

African Wax Print Maxi Dress

For the month of January, the members of the Mood Sewing Network were given the opportunity to work with an African Wax Print, also know as Ankara fabric. I chose this Gold and Dark Navy Waxed Cotton with Gold Metallic Foil, the one with the foil leaves. There is also the same colorway with peace signs in foil instead, if that is more your style. What I really wanted was a jacket and fitted pants combo, but I wasn’t sure where I’d wear it, and I decided on a maxi dress instead. These cuts of fabric come in 6 yard bundles, […]

It’s a Wrap!

What’s better than a little black dress?…… A little black dress with a big colorful wrap! This month several members of The Mood Sewing Network are sewing African Waxed Cotton. I enthusiastically agreed to the challenge having never sewn this fabric before, and when my six-yard piece of Spectra Green Waxed Cotton African Print with Gold Metallic Foil arrived I wanted to use every inch of this luscious metallic textile.Big wraps are such luxury accessories! It took me a while to learn how to wear wraps comfortably, but now that I know what to do with them I truly value these versatile pieces. When folded in half […]

An Ankara Ensemble

By now you know a few of us here at the Mood Sewing Network used the month of January to dive into a “challenge” fabric. Some know it as Ankara, some as African Wax, some as Dutch Wax. I know it as YES PLEASE. I LOVE wax print. Love it, love it, love it. Did I mention I love it? This is an Osikani print, which is printed with metallic gold foil overlay. Although I always pre-wash my Ankara to soften it up, this time I decided to leave the wax in and use the stiff quality to play with […]

Men’s African Wax Print Pants

Happy New Year, everybody! This month, a number of us Mood Sewing Network bloggers decided to sew with African wax prints. You’re probably familiar with these fabrics (Rome-based designer Stella Jean is their best-known proponent) — brilliant-colored, abstract cotton prints with a wax coating that can be left on for a stiffer hand or laundered out for softer garments. The history of African wax prints is a little complicated — they’re not always African; in fact the fabric I used to make my pants is labelled “Supreme Wax Print Holland.” (Read more about the history of African wax prints here.)
