Jersey Shirt

Solid color knit shirts are a need for my wardrobe, so this week I worked on one to fill the void in my closet.    I went with Mood Fabric’s Cobalt Viscose Jersey, which has a lovely hand and drape.  This color is sold out but there are several other colors in that same fabric or you can pick from this great selection of jersey fabrics.

I went with McCall’s 7247 for this fabric which is clingy and I thought this would be a good pattern for the fabric.  One  thing to note about this pattern, it is a slim fit.  In fact, the finished measurements are some of the smallest I can remember for a McCall’s pattern.  I cut out a 12 for the hips or waist and between a 12 and 14 for the bust.  In retrospect, I should of made a straight 14 for this fabric type.

I did change up the construction of this knit top.  McCall’s instructs you to sew the sleeves in the sound after sewing the top’s side sleeves.  I really do not like to sew knit sleeves in the round, this meant a couple of changes.  I attached the front flap to the front by serging all the edges.  I tried my sewing machine but the jersey just wanted to pull down into the needle plate.  After, serging the front flap in place, I treated the front as one piece.

Let’s talk about this front flap, don’t worry about the wind catching your top.  Under this front flap, is a shirt, side seams on both sides – here is a peak

I did use my coverstitch machine to stitch around the neckline

This project was a quick one,  which I appreciated.  Sometimes around my house, summer gets very busy and sewing time is limited, I am sure many of you know the feeling.  Despite the busy times, I have that need to get to my sewing room.  A quick project, is just what I need to fill that sewing need and come out with a new summer garment.

I do see my summer slowing down a bit after the 4th of July, so summer plans include some more easy knit projects plus some other garments that will take several sessions in the sewing room.  My hope is to get the majority of my summer sewing list completed before mid-August, do you think I can do that?

Happy summer sewing, I hope you get all your sewing plans completed!
