Holiday Brocade

Long, long ago back in… July, this beautiful brocade caught my eye.  The
rich jewel tones sparkled against my brown complexion.  I saw the perfect holiday dress.  I bet you’re thinking, holiday dress in July?  Yeap.  I wanted it to be ready when for the first big holiday event rolled around.
Typically, I make myself a birthday dress.  And that dress is usually white or off-white.  My birthday falls on the week of our annual Women’s conference.  This year I wanted to change it up a bit.  No white dress for me.  This jewel toned dress will take the place of my usual white dress.  I finished it a few days after my big day.

I like this brocade’s bold print.  It turned out so well that I think I’ll continue the
boldness for future birthday dresses.  Mood has a huge section of brocade fabrics.  There is something available for every complexion and
style.

I used Palmer/Pletsch McCall 6464.  It was the first time I used this particular pattern.  I made several changes for fit and for style/construction.  For starters, I made my usual fit changes, which I will detail on my blog.  The style and construction changes included:

  •  trim along the bodice and front seams of the dress

  •  Hong Kong finished seams on the skirt of the dress

  •  silk organza to help shape the sleeve cap

  •  hand picked zipper with beads (you can hardly see the beads because of the fabric print.)

So, this is my first holiday dress of the season.  I may make two more.  We will see.

Happy Sewing!

Wow!!! Cennetta, you are truly dazzling in this!! These colors are just so gorgeous on you! I’m a sucker for a beautiful brocade as well, and this one is really a winner! I love all the details you put into it as well – that organza really helped make a gorgeous sleeve cap (now that’s a statement that you’d only ever hear from a fellow sewist!) Happy belated birthday! This looks like a gorgeous gift to yourself!

This dress really speaks to me. It looks so good on you, the fit the colors are so right. Can’t wait to see the other 2 holiday dresses you make. I too want to comment on the sleeves, beautifully shaped with organdy. Sometimes that is so hard to make work.
