Draped Aubergine Dress!

Ralph Lauren Silk Dress

For Fall 2012, all shades of purple, plum, eggplant and aubergine are so hot for Fall that I had to embrace that color trend.

This dress is New Look 6123.  It’s a juxtaposition of views C & D.

Ralph Lauren Silk Dress

I used a Ralph Lauren silk crepe de chine from Mood Fabrics.  It’s listed as “purple.”  I like to refer to it as “aubergine”.  It’s a pretty deep purple that looks almost navy or eggplant… depending on the lighting.  This fabric is gorgeous and it was a dream to work with.  And the drape is incredible.

The alterations I made were to do a one inch FBA on the the bodice and I added two inches to the skirt portion.

The pattern didn’t suggest a lining.  But there was no way I was going to use this beautiful silk crepe de chine without lining it.  I can’t imagine how it would’ve hung without one.

I love how the silk fabric behaved when cut for the ruffles.  The ruffles just hung and fell into place by the next day.

Overall, this is a great pattern that went together really easily.  And since there are so many other variations, I may or may not sew this one again.  But I wouldn’t completely rule it out.

Here are my accessories and my new nail color:  OPI “Suzi and the 7 Düsseldorfs”.

Since Fall has finally fallen, I added a black jacket.

Pretty! The purple looks so much more vibrant on you then on the Mood site. How did you finish the ruffles?

Thanks Amanda! The ruffles are doubled. So instead of trying to understitch in those curves, I just edgestitched.

In my youth, purple was one of my most favorite colors. Your lovely garment may inspire me to try it again. You look so chic and pretty at the same time. I am so in awe with this web site. I hope soon that I can move around well enough to become more active. The Mood blog is so welcome and you great ladies are so wonderful and inspirational…..thanks

That is a beautiful dress, and your *ss looks fantastic! Is the fabric shiny? I can’t tell..in some pictures, it almost looks like a velvet, but in others it looks a bit shiny…

LOL! Thanks Heather! Not really shiny, but it does have a “sheen” if that makes any sense.
