A Bright Winter Ensemble

Yeah, I know. I kind of went Sgt Pepper’s on these photos. January will do that to me. Lack of light, lack of warmth, lack of photographer. The trifecta. But let’s play Where’s Waldo and find my garment in this riotous, ham handed, amateur photoshopped collage! Can you find the rectangle of sweater knit above? That’s my “self drafted” H&M knockoff, made with some famous designer novelty knit (similar here). I succumbed to Black Friday and bought a couple of drapey sweaters at The Beast, and upon further perusal, found they were really two large rectangles with two small rectangles […]

Sweater Knit Cowl-Neck Tunic

If you are a driven person like me, you are constantly challenging yourself to do better and accomplish more. Who wants to cruise on the bunny slope when you’re comfortable skiing moguls? Due to recent time constraints, I was forced to rediscover the joy of simple sewing or not sew at all. Not only did I realize I should do more easy sewing, but my latest project reminded me of why I started sewing again in the first place. My adventurous side led me to order this Olive Abstract Knit from Mood Fabrics without ordering a sample. Fortunately I loved […]

Comfy Cowl and Leggings

I currently can’t stop dreaming about making beautiful silk blouses and tailored wool coats and faux leather jackets, but my dreams are confounded by the fact that I’m so far into my pregnancy that all I want to wear are my comfiest comfies. So, to add a bit of polish to my daily wardrobe here in my last month of pregnancy, I decided to make a maternity-approved variation of the classic cowl from Mood Fabric’s black wool jersey. Mood describes this jersey as “a soft, tissue-weight wool jersey knit… perfect for t-shirts and tops.” I couldn’t agree more – it […]

Snuggly Sweater Dress

Mimosas and Mood Fabrics on Saturday, Sazerac and Steelers on Sunday, and Sweater Knit to fondle all weekend.  Monday was a cruel mistress. Need inspiration?  Stuck in a rut?  If you can, hightail it to the second floor on Mood Fabrics NYC.  It’ll cure ya.  I never know what I’m going to find up there, but I always walk away hugging something fiercely.  Like I’ve just won a prize that must be guarded with my life.  This poly sweater knit is sooooo soft, which only added to the hugging factor.  I believe the tag said it was from Italy. Is […]

A Mountain Of Jersey

There are clothes that women love on women, there are clothes that men love on women, and never the twain shall meet. Well, the fairer sex can usually go both ways, but the harder sex, if you will forgive the pun, can’t get behind certain styles: High waisted jeans. Bubble skirts.  Gathered waists. Drop crotch. So obviously, being away from Ruggy, I am consoling myself by making the things he will undoubtedly dislike, and reaping the praise of the female company I’m keeping at work. Is this to spite him? No! Never! Look, if my man’s not here to compliment […]

The Silk Crepe de Chine Shirt Dress

Lately, it’s been feeling like monsoon season.  Hence the lack of blog posts.  But the great thing about rainy days is that I get to spend guilt-free days indoors sewing. This is another fabric-lead project:  meaning that the fabric inspired the look.  I’d been wanting a shirt dress for the season and this gorgeous fuchsia geometric print Thakoon silk crepe de chine from Mood Fabrics was a great choice.  Editor’s note: This fabric just sold out on our web site, but we do have some available at Mood NYC, if you’d like to place a phone order: 212-730-5003, ask for the […]

Sunny Golden Plaid Boyfriend Shirt

It’s hard to start writing about my new favorite shirt while I’m still reeling about the unnecessary violence at the finish line of the Boston Marathon on Monday. The attack hits so close to home for me. Running is a huge part of my life. I ran the Boston Marathon last year (and in 2005), I had friends running this year, and I spent most of my Monday morning watching the live streaming of the race. My heart goes out to all those who have been impacted. [Huge, deep breath.] Okay, so about my awesome new shirt. I’m almost embarrassed […]

The “Oona Made Me Do It!” Top

Friends. The internet is a dangerous and scary place. One minute you’re innocently setting up a Twitter account, and the next you’re accepting dares from a madwoman! BE VERY, VERY CAREFUL.  #Sewingdares spread like wildfire! Obviously, I’m no sissy, so I immediately agreed to this dare and headed off to Mood with Oona!  She pulled out bolt after bolt and wrapped me in vibrant colors and prints from head to toe. It was a difficult decision, but, like the loose cannon she is, that girl decided at the last minute to up the ante and dare me to use TWO […]

An Alien Fabric

And here endeth the outdoor shots for this particular post.  IT IS FRIGID OUTSIDE, even for my snow foolery behind.  And although there’s a lovely amount of wool in this Caroline Herrera yardage (similar here), it’s not the sort meant to keep you cozy. Que moody shots!  I had no idea we could get such extraterrestrial light in our bedroom in the middle of the day.  Weird, man.  The alien landscape must have affected me, think I could crack a smile?  Inside I’m positively gleeful, I love this crazy dress tunic top thingamajig! Let me start at the beginning. I […]
