Black, Red, and White Striped Rayon Jersey Knit – Vogue 1314

After a mini purge of my closets, I noticed that there were huge empty spaces that need to be filled with more clothes made by me. I decided to start with a few tops. This is the second of many more to make.  My new toppers will fill the void were the worn tattered garments used to hang. So here’s to beefing up my wardrobe with a simple pullover t-shirt made with Mood’s Italian Pirate Black/Mars Red/Bright White Bengal Striped Stretch Rayon Jersey Knit.   This jersey is fantastic. It’s perfect for keeping it simple. I used Vogue 1314 again. [...]

Liberty on London Silk-Cotton Voile – McCall 7359

Do you want to make a breezy, floaty top for the summer? Well look no further, Mood has a slew of beautiful  Liberty on London fabrics that are perfect for light, airy summer tops.  It took me a while to settle on Mistral Golden Nutria Silk-Cotton Voile.  This beauty has a hint of transparency.  The finish is smooth and glossy. The drape is a perfect match for McCall’s 7359.   The pattern is described as:  pullover tops (semi-fitted through bust) have upper sections extending into sleeves with gathers, front pleated lower sections, and narow hem. A, B: Neck [...]

A Birthday Blouse for Mom!

This week was my mother’s birthday, and I could think of no better gift than a custom-made blouse. I found this beautiful blue and white embroidered eyelet at Mood Fabrics in New York City.  It’s cotton and airy and perfect for late spring and summer.  (This particular embroidered eyelet seems to be sold out, but you can see others available online here.)  One of the great things about this embroidered eyelet is that it’s light enough for a blouse but sturdy enough to be used for more substantial garments, like a jacket or skirt. I used Simplicity 2339, a contemporary [...]

Linen Knit Bowline Sweater

Let me introduce you to my new favourite top! This little number was one of those projects led by the fabric. For some reason my favourite handmade garments always begin like that and this one has pretty much only been off my back to be washed since I finished it. I found this Theory Linen Knit in store at Mood Fabrics NYC on my trip last month. Can’t find it online but there are a handful of other gorgeous linen knits or the full Theory range of lovely unusual neutrals. I love a good browse of the Mood website but I [...]

Bright Floral Top for Spring!

Hi Everyone! I hope if you’re in the northern hemisphere you’re starting to feel the presence of spring! Here in my little corner of Texas we like to skip the whole transitional season thing and move right into summer.  After living here for 6 years I’ve finally resigned myself to this and just accepted the fact that I shouldn’t become to invested in cold weather sewing.  The truth is I will always get much more wear out of an extensive warm weather wardrobe than I will wool coats – no matter how fun they are to sew! This month I [...]

Sleeveless Striped Metallic Knit Top

After last month’s complex Easter dress, I decided to keep it simple for April and make a knit top in a pattern I’ve used before with good results. The pattern is Jalie 2921. I used Mood Fabric’s oyster/brown gray metallic striped cotton jersey knit. A couple months ago I’d bought a cut of it along with its matching larger stripe for a different knit top, but the project bombed. However, I liked the fabric so much that I got another 1.5 yards and went for a garment I knew would turn out. Since I wanted more of a casual look [...]

Princely purple silk Faille with sparkling black jersey knit – Vogue 8980 and Vogue 1314

There is something magical about the color purple.  Yes, it’s noticeable, vibrant, and regal.  It’s a royal color worn by noble throughout the ages. The color purple is also associated with power, ambition, luxury, wealth, dignity, grandeur, peace, independence, and wisdom.     So, you can understand why I am drawn to the color. It symbolizing many qualities that I am or hope to be.  Simply, it is beautiful and I love the many shades of it.  I paired this mysterioso purple silk faille with an audience high-low full skirt, Vogue 8980.     It’s not your typical box [...]

Linen Stripe Jacket

Linen and warmer temperatures just go together, right?  When I spotted this Rag and Bone Linen on Mood Fabrics site, I knew I had to have it.  The fabric is sold by the panel and I ordered 2 panels which was just enough to squeeze out this jacket.     Now what to make with this fabulous linen?  I found some ideas on Pinterest, mainly unstructured tops with some fun play on the stripes.  That seemed like a good idea to start but I wasn’t quite sure.  Next step was to look through my patterns and I found  Vogue [...]

Silk Crepe Blouse + Corduroy Skirt

As much as I love the ease and guaranteed matching of making a dress, I also really really love sewing separates. To prevent the dreaded “closet orphan” (that one piece that doesn’t go with anything else in your closet), I always try to choose fabric and styles that will mix and match with things already existing in my wardrobe. Black and white polka dots and mustard tend to go with everything, so this particular duo was a no-brainer! The blouse is made from some gorgeous black and white polka dotted silk crepe that I bought at Mood Fabrics while in [...]
