Ruffles for Fall 2016!

I am currently working on transional garments, pieces that I can wear now and later. I’m also embracing some of Fall 2016’s hottest trends – Ruffles. I love a black and white outfit. These separates get the most mileage in my wardrobe. So let me tell you about these pieces:   This Black Stretch Silk Georgette top is modified from Vogue 1308, which is a jumpsuit pattern. I took the bodice and lengthened it and I eliminated the back zipper to create a tuckable, pullover top. I doubled the asymmetrical ruffle for added volume and finished them with a rolled […]

Casual Summer Separates

Phew! Is it just me, or has July really flown by in a steamy wave of hot, sticky, summer days? Seriously, where did this month go?! Honestly, I can’t complain, I spent a whole week of this month vacationing with my family in Disney World – Mom, Dad, sister, two brothers, a sister-in-law, a brother-in-law, and six nieces and nephews all under the age of 8!!! It was the absolute best kind of chaos imaginable. Of course, me being me, I decided I had nothing to wear for said vacation and that I needed a whole new summer wardrobe a smooth 5 […]

Soft Bisque Solid Viscose Jersey – Simplicity 8131

Mood’s viscose jersey is so soft and comfy.  It feels like you are wearing pajamas.  This lovely fabric comes in five dreamy colors.  Something for every complexion.  I chose soft bisque; it’s a perfect neutral that can be paired with almost any color.         I used Simplicity 8131 to make this top.  The pattern is for woven fabrics, but works well with this light weight knit fabric. I don’t always follow the recommended fabrics.  Making my own clothes gives me the freedom to choose my own fabric and pattern combinations. This pattern is described as:  misses’ pullover […]

Tropical Denim Shorts and Back Cut Out Tee

This month’s project for the Mood Sewing Network was all about sewing a holiday wardrobe. With a couple of trips planned I had my eye out for summer print fabrics which I’d still be able to get some wear out of at home in London. This Tropically Printed Denim jumped right out at me and I was ordering it without a second thought. Unfortunately it’s now sold out in both colour ways which I’m not surprised about. It was one of those instances when you see the fabric and instantly know what you want to make it into. In this […]

Stretch Cotton Sateen Burda 6879

I consider myself one fortunate soul.  Each month I have an opportunity to select from a huge inventory of gorgeous fabrics at Moods online fabric store.  This month I’m pleased to showcase my second pair of Burda 6879 made with Mood’s Theory Elmwood Stretch Cotton Sateen.  It’s all around beautiful:  the texture, the ease of sewing, the look.  This lovely sateen is a medium weight sateen elastane/cotton blend.  It has a soft hand with a silky finish.  It wears easy and is not binding.  The weight is sturdy enough to make a curved waistband that cradles your waist.  Beautiful […]

A Monochromatic Beach Look

Hello, and happy almost July! We’re definitely in the thick of summer now! One of the many perks of living in a beach town is that I feel completely justified in treating myself to some new handmade swimwear every year. Fresh swimming duds are definitely a wardrobe necessity for me! I actually began stashing some swimwear fabric earlier this year for this summer’s suit. I’m always drawn to patterns, and even more so with fun garments like a bikini. This Black/White Broken Glass Digitally Printed Tricot from Mood Fabrics online caught my eye with its modern print and monochromatic palette. It’s […]

Jersey Shirt

Solid color knit shirts are a need for my wardrobe, so this week I worked on one to fill the void in my closet.    I went with Mood Fabric’s Cobalt Viscose Jersey, which has a lovely hand and drape.  This color is sold out but there are several other colors in that same fabric or you can pick from this great selection of jersey fabrics. I went with McCall’s 7247 for this fabric which is clingy and I thought this would be a good pattern for the fabric.  One  thing to note about this pattern, it is a slim […]

Black and White is Always Right!

A black and white outfit is always très hip. You get pieces that can be worn together or separate.  That’s the perfect way to add to your wardrobe. Especially when using seasonless fabrics.   When searching for seasonless fabrics, I look for comfort. I also look for fabrics that will keep you comfortable in the warm months and can also be layered in the cool months. For my top, I used this gorgeous Black Sleek Viscose Ponte Knit. I love the weight of it.  It works for this top and it would also work for a body con style dress. […]

Bright Italian Batiste Button-Front Shirt

It’s officially summer in Texas, y’all. The sun is blazing, our air-conditioner runs almost constantly, and I’m wishing that muumuus would make a dramatic fashion comeback. Barring such a phenomenal event, I’m instituting my summer wardrobe rules, once again. Light, natural fibers and flowing shapes are key to surviving triple-digit heat. All the better, if bright colors and summery prints are heavily involved. Mood Fabrics has a ton of cotton prints that hit this sweet spot, right now. One of my favorites is this Italian Floral Printed Cotton Batiste, which comes in three pretty colorways–Blue/Yellow/Orange, Fig/Pink/Blue, and Black/Orange/Yellow–and is covered […]
