Easy Ponte Summer Separates

Hi there! Is it hot where you are? Because it sure is hot here! July is most definitely the least forgiving summer month in terms of the heat and humidity here in coastal Texas.  And, no coincidence, it also happens to be the summer month when I have the least interest in clothes of any sort! Even just looking at the prettiest of sundresses all I can think is “sweaty back”. It’s no surprise that my sewjo also takes a nosedive during the summer doldrums as well.  When wearing clothes turns into an unpleasant reality, making clothes loses a bit of […]

Navy + White Gingham Off-The-Shoulder Blouse

Off-the-shoulder blouses are currently everywhere: in stores, magazines, and pattern catalogues. I don’t always make the newest trend right away, probably because I like to see what other people make first or which patterns seem to work the best. This time, though, I happened upon the perfect fabric. This navy and white embroidered gingham is from Moodfabrics.com. This fabric is the loveliest of weights for a blouse, and has a slight amount of stretch to it not included in the description. There’s only a little bit left as of this post. I highly recommend you snap some up! I chose […]

Year of the Sleeve – Voile Blouse

The sleeve for Spring 2017 seems to be the trend to have and I am jumping right onto that trend with both feet arms (in this case).  I just want so many of these looks and styles, which means I will be busy sewing statement sleeves all summer long.  For this look, I went with Mood Fabrics’ Dotted Cotton Voile (sold out) but there are several Mood Fabrics’ Voiles in stock or you can look at Mood Fabrics’ Dotted Swiss for the texture of my blouse.  On another note, Amy used this same fabric for a blouse she made for […]

Hearts on Hearts – Mood Playful Jersey Knit Kwik Sew K4028

Worn with Simplicity faux leather leggings S1372 Today I’d like to showcase a lovely light weight jersey knit, Charcoal Hearts Poly Jersey Gray/White Hearts.  The print is exactly as it’s name states.   It’s perfect for a fun, funky top or a cute little summer wrap dress.  The hand is smooth and soft, the drape has a little more body than what you’d expect in a light-weight. I can’t take credit for picking this one.  My daughter asked for it and chose Kwik Sew Knit Top K4028, View B.  This was an extremely easy sewing project.  I was done in […]

Nanette Lepore Eyelet Tunic

When ordering fabric at Mood Fabrics, sometimes it takes me a long time to decide, just too many options and decisions.  Then there are other times, the fabric is just perfect and I cannot get it into my cart soon enough.  That is the case with this Mood Fabrics’ Nanette Lepore Cotton Embroidered Eyelet, it was so gorgeous on the computer screen and even more beautiful in person.     I knew I wanted to use a pattern to showcase the border scallop and a simple design that let the fabric be the showcase.  I went through my […]

Self-Drafted Wool Crepe Blouse and Pants

For the last two years I’ve been attending classes at Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) here in New York City.  Last semester I took a draping class that was dedicated to designing soft silhouettes like dolman sleeves, pegged skirts, and cowls. At the beginning of the semester we draped in muslin and then moved on to knit jersey and woven crepe.  For our final project, we were asked to drape a two-piece ensemble with a resort feel (think winter cruise).  One of the pieces had to include a cowl — either front neck, back neck, or underarm cowl, or a […]

Springtime Embroidered Top

This embroidered mesh from Alice + Olivia was love at first sight. When I get my hands on a fabric like this, my tendency is to go for the gold and try to make something ridiculously complicated, meant for full-on party mode. I’m glad I reigned myself in on this one, because this fabric is a garden party right off the bolt. And ridiculously complicated, even for a simple self-drafted top like this! There was a lot of HIGHLY enjoyable work involved. The seams were stitched up with tear-away stabilizer, then trimmed & bound in a flocked velvet ponte from […]

Style Arc Head to Toe

What came first ~ the pants or the top? The pants, but let’s talk first about the top. I was about to bust to sew a cold-shoulder top. I see them everywhere, and after one attempt and mediocre result last spring I’m at it again. Fortunately, the pattern companies now offer many more selections, and I had a better vision. For this top I selected the Style Arc Cold Shoulder Knit Top. It is designed for a close fit, which fit almost perfectly without any adjustments. My fabric is a ponte knit from Mood Fabrics and I’m linking to entire collection of ponte due to […]

An Ankara Ensemble

By now you know a few of us here at the Mood Sewing Network used the month of January to dive into a “challenge” fabric. Some know it as Ankara, some as African Wax, some as Dutch Wax. I know it as YES PLEASE. I LOVE wax print. Love it, love it, love it. Did I mention I love it? This is an Osikani print, which is printed with metallic gold foil overlay. Although I always pre-wash my Ankara to soften it up, this time I decided to leave the wax in and use the stiff quality to play with […]
