The Brightness of Princeton Orange Silk and McCall’s 6794

Bold color choices are great any season!  I’m so lucky that they dominant my personal color palette.  Bright oranges, greens, purples and blues are the perfect match for my skin tone.  Lucky me Mood has such an extensive range of colors and fabrics available at their online store. The spring color trends included celosia orange, a perfect shade for me.  I found Princeton Orange Silk Twill.  It’s a deeper and softer orange color that is perfect for any time of year. This fabric may be used to make tops and dresses.   Any garment you choose to make will lighten up […]

Silk Charmeuse Cami with wow-factor back

For a simple looking top, this took me a loooonnnng time. However it was an interesting sewing journey and I’ve learnt a lot more about silk! Silk charmeuse is a fabric that demands careful handling and thoughtful sewing – and packs a punch when you finish. It’s worth every minute. I had originally planned to sew a long, draped evening dress with this lovely amethyst solid silk charmeuse  but I decided that I might appear to be drowning in a purple tidal wave so I decided to sew a shorter dress. I spent eight hours sewing the lined bodice and even […]

Playclothes!

Just as hubby started taking pictures in the backyard the snake appeared scaring us to the front where the light wasn’t as good. Ugh – it’s the one drawback about summer in the South…. …but there is nothing better than frolicking through the warm summer breezes in lightweight clothes that greet the heat with a smile. Those cute boutique gauze tops I saw last week might have been tempting had the Marc Jacobs white cotton gauze from Mood Fabrics not been on its way to my door. Sewing with gauze moved me straight into a peace, love and happiness state of […]

Minty Summer Separates!

Hi, guys! Hope you’re all well! So, today’s project is a bit of a different one for me. I’ve been wanting a full, mint green skirt for the longest time, and it’s finally warm enough to wear one! I chose a creamy cotton voile (here’s a similar color that’s absolutely gorgeous!), thinking it would be nice and light for summer. It’s not totally opaque, but I left it unlined- I can always wear a slip if I want to. You don’t really need a pattern for a skirt this simple, but I was inspired by Pattern Runway’s free Easy Gathered […]

B(l)ack to Basics

Hey everyone! I have had nothing but wardrobe basics on the brain for the past month. After all, one can make only so many fun dresses before you’re left standing in front of your closet on a random Tuesday morning, naked, with nothing to wear! (No? Only me?) So this month, I bring you the ever-so-humble jeans and a t-shirt combo – in all black. Because black is always the new black. This is my fourth pair of handmade jeans, and I swear they just keep getting better! For this pair I used a black, medium weight denim with a bit of […]

Hotter Than July In Marigold Tribal Print Twill and Mustard Striped Washed Silk

Summer has finally arrived in Chicago.  Well, at least it feels like summer.  Last weekend temperatures were in the 90’s with a lot of humidity.  HOT! This Mood Fabric project was the perfect kick off for my summer wardrobe. At first sight, I fell in love with this Marigold Tribal-Print Twill by Oscar de La Renta.  This funky tribal medium weight twill has a stiff drape and is great for pencil skirts and shorts.  I decided to pair this with a sassy little Burda skirt featured in the Burda magazine February 2011 issue.  I only glanced at the construction details.  […]

Men’s Liberty-Inspired Cotton Paisley Shirt

Often, when dining out, between rich courses one is served a palate cleanser: a sprig of parsley for example, or some mint sorbet. This shirt — simpler than my typical Mood Sewing Network fare of late —  is my version of a palate cleanser: easy on the eyes and refreshingly minty. I adore Mood Fabrics’ selection of cotton shirting and shirt-weight prints.  I saw this mint and pale gray Liberty of London-style paisley (available in a number of colorways, btw) and was immediately smitten.  (To see this and other similar prints available at Mood Fabrics, click here.) I’ve learned, since […]

Sporty Chic Separates

As much as a I love a beautiful dress, great separates keep my wardrobe moving on a daily basis.  Sure, a dress is the epitome of one-piece dressing ease.  But the ability to rework separates again and again, makes creating new outfit possibilities endless! Lately, I’ve been working on filling gaps in my wardrobe and I discovered that I need more knit tops that are wash and go and easy to throw on.  And a striped nautical knit top is a perfect addition.  I chose a beautiful black and ivory striped viscose fabric that was so popular that it’s sold […]

Men’s Lace Shirt and Cotton Jersey Shorts

I’ve been thinking about lace a lot this spring. Originally I bought this gorgeous black cotton lace with the intention of using it for an overlay.  What I liked most about it — aside from the beautiful floral pattern — was that it could be trimmed to create a finished scalloped edge.  (You can check out Mood Fabrics’ selection of cotton lace here.) Continuing my passion for pattern mixing, I decided to create a short-sleeve shirt using the lace in combination with a lovely Italian floral cotton and classic black and white gingham.  (You can see Mood’s selection of ginghams […]
