End-of-Summer Men’s Pants, Shirt, & Cotton Cardigan

The summer is coming to a close, alas! At this time of year I’m focused on sewing things I can still wear in the heat but which can carry me over into the cooler days to come.  I’m about to go on vacation and the weather in Cape Cod this time of year is mighty variable. Here’s what I made to take with me: Last year I sewed a shawl-collar cotton cardigan out of a beautiful blue sweater knit I found in Mood Fabrics in NYC.  At the time, I purchased the same knit in a sandy-beige colorway and it […]

Men’s Cotton Slacks and Zip-Front Hoodie

The arrival of spring calls for spring sewing! At Mood Fabrics in NYC I found two beautiful lightweight fabrics I knew I could turn into some classic garments to carry me into the (eagerly awaited) warm weather. The first was a smooth cotton woven with a crisp hand, perfect for a pair of spring or summer dress pants. (You can find similar fabric at Mood here, here, and here.) My second fabric was a denim-colored, brushed cotton twill as plush and drapey as sweatshirt jersey.  I decided to use it to make a zip-front hoodie; I may use the remainder […]

Revisiting Red & Seafoam

Hey everyone! I don’t know about you, but this is about the time of year that I start really hankering for spring. I miss everything about it, especially the part about not freezing (it also doesn’t hurt that I’ve been stuck home for the past 3 days due to a really bad ice storm. Actually, I’m not complaining about that at all haha)! I’ve been trying to spring-ify my wardrobe just a little (maybe in hopes that it will make the season hurry up faster?), which means digging out all the colors I forgot about over the winter, as well […]

A Bright Winter Ensemble

Yeah, I know. I kind of went Sgt Pepper’s on these photos. January will do that to me. Lack of light, lack of warmth, lack of photographer. The trifecta. But let’s play Where’s Waldo and find my garment in this riotous, ham handed, amateur photoshopped collage! Can you find the rectangle of sweater knit above? That’s my “self drafted” H&M knockoff, made with some famous designer novelty knit (similar here). I succumbed to Black Friday and bought a couple of drapey sweaters at The Beast, and upon further perusal, found they were really two large rectangles with two small rectangles […]

Isabel Marant-Inspired Sweater!

Hi, guys! Hope you’re all well and that those of you who celebrate Thanksgiving had a wonderful holiday! One of the best things about sewing is that you can take an idea and make it your own. You know, when you see something and like it, but wish it was just a little bit different? The idea from this came from a sweater from Isabel Marant’s Pre-Fall 2014 collection. I loved the colorblocking, particularly in grey and brown. It looks really cool together and is a fun alternative to the black and brown combos I’ve been seeing lately in fashion […]

Men’s Shawl-Collar Cotton Cardigan

I love cardigan sweaters! I found this gorgeous Italian cotton sweater knit at Mood Fabrics on a recent trip there and I couldn’t leave it behind.  It’s thick and luxurious-feeling and the colors remind me of the Mediterranean Sea.  (You can find a wide range of sweater knits available at Mood Fabrics here.) I decided to make a cotton cardigan out of it, using a vintage pattern in my stash, McCall’s 5267, from 1976.  It’s such a classic style, and I love the shawl collar, raglan sleeves, and jacket length. This sweater wasn’t difficult to make, though I confess to […]

Sweater-Knit Cardigan

You know those days when you need comfort foods? Well, some days I feel like I need comfort clothes—and for those days what’s better than a sweater knit? Online at Mood Fabrics there is quite a selection of sweater knits. After much deliberation, I ordered Mood Fabrics’ Mallard Blue Brushed Cozy Acrylic Knit, with blue being one of my favorite colors. For the pattern, I went with Simplicity 2309, a cardigan with a wide collar and a flounce at the bottom. This fabric is the coziest and oh so warm. It’s perfect for these cold winter days in the Midwest. […]

A Manly Striped Sweater

I don’t tend to do much sewing when it comes to men’s clothing, much to my boyfriend’s disappointment. Not really sure what my hang-up is —every time I find myself working on the odd piece of clothing for him, I am reminded of how much I actually enjoy doing this type of stuff. Not a lot of fit issues, frills, or funky patterns. Just simple and straightforward and… safe. Since I average about one piece of clothing per year for my dude, I reckon it’s time to share for 2013—a striped sweater, in a very manly wool knit. We found […]

Ready for Fall & Winter with an Italian Sweater Knit Dress

Where I live, fall comes without the trees changing colors. It’s a bit of a bummer. Still, you can tell that fall is in the air when all the girls start breaking out their sweaters, tights and boots. In preparation for Southern California “sweater weather” I recently browsed the sweater knit section of Mood Fabrics in Los Angeles. This Italian wool sweater knit caught my eye immediately. The fine gauge was cozy but not bulky. Warm but not too warm. The fine gauge was also perfect for the Rebecca Taylor sweater dress pattern (a.k.a. Vogue 1315). The pockets had me at […]
