Plaid wool knit sweater

I recently have fallen in love with a new silhouette for myself, and it’s been a lot of fun playing with it: a cropped pullover. Whether it’s in the form of a hand knit sweater (which started my obsession) or sewing my own tops, I’ve been loving this shape lately. This version was the third I made from the same pattern, Butterick 7557 from around 1956. Great envelope artwork too, right? Many vintage patterns specify types of fabric recommended, but this one didn’t. In my mind though, it was perfect for knits! Kind of a cropped vintage version of a […]

Warm Orchid Medallions

For someone who prefers warm weather to cold weather on any given day, I’m loving winter sewing this month! One look at Mood Fabric’s ultra soft black wool knit with orchid pink medallions had me wishing for freezing temperatures ? This lovely medium weight knit features a movable drape and is perfect for many designs. I chose the Blackwood Cardigan pattern by Helen’s Closet. This pattern is very well designed with minimal excess fabric in the front and a close fit around the neck and shoulders. Its fitted shape and extra long sleeves make it perfect for wearing under jackets and vests. Having sewn […]

Three Cozy Sweaters

Okay, it is cold here, which really is normal for the end of December and all I want to wear is warm and cozy.  This Mood Fabrics’ Italian Gray French Terry is perfect, it looks just like a chunky sweater knit but it is really a comfy sweatshirt! In November on Instagram I started seeing posts about One Week One Pattern and that interested me.  What is One Week One Pattern?  One Week, One Pattern is a photo challenge to try and get as many sewists as possible making the most out of their sewing patterns, by wearing garments […]

A Cardigan Sweater for Mom!

I don’t sew knits very often, but when I do, I most enjoy working with sweater knits. Unlike jerseys, sweater knits tend to be thick and stable, making them easier to sew. They are generally woven from wool or wool blends, though I’ve worked with cotton blend sweater knits too.  (You can check out Mood Fabrics’ selection of sweater knits here.)  I imagine it would take a lot longer to knit a sweater than it would to sew a sweater from a sweater knit fabric. Gratification isn’t exactly instant, but it’s faster! For this month’s project, I purchased two yards […]

Mo’ Winter, Mo’ Hair.

Yeah, it’s not really feeling like winter in New York, but it’s not really feeling like spring either, so you’ll allow me my playtime with words… I mean, this is a lot of layering for the end of March! (And a lot of false exposure. Sorry. I blame the gray “spring” day and the indoor lighting.) Here’s a better look at this gorgeous mohair “famous designer” knit. I could be wrong, but given my talent for sniffing out the Sui, I’m pretty sure I know the designer. It’s a thin knit, so I decided to partially line this little swacket (sweater […]

Alice + Olivia Sweater Cape

I think I look smug here. I know I FEEL smug here. I’m grinning like the cat that ate the canary all throughout these photos, and I don’t care. Just a few short days ago, I was certain I’d completely wrecked this Alice + Olivia sweater knit, found on the top floor of Mood Fabric’s NY location. For this summer girl, Mood’s magical top floor is one of the few reasons to celebrate the drop in temperatures. (Though this yardage was found in-store, here’s some sweater knit offerings if your fingers are doing the walking!) Cold weather. Short days. UGH. Invariably, my summer-lorn mindset […]

Colorful menswear for spring!

Spring makes me want more color in my wardrobe.  And in everyone else’s! I worked on two additional projects this month I wanted to share. One is a wacky and wonderful knit sweater I made for myself and the other is a long-sleeved dress shirt in an Easter-y palette I made for my partner, Michael. First, the sweater. I found this wonderful wool blend Italian knit — a  one-yard bolt end — at Mood Fabrics in NYC. I loved the saturated colors, which immediately made me think of The Simpsons — very cartoonish.  It also has raised areas, like a topographical […]

Caped in Sweet Grape Faux Fur! Isn’t It Spring?

Yikes! It’s almost Spring. So why did I decide to make this cape? Because this sweet grape acrylic faux fur (#306542) is beautiful. Spring is not yet sprung in the mid-west. Days are sunny about 55 degrees, while night time temperatures drop to the mid or upper 40’s. I’ll get at least a few wears before warmer days truly come my way. Then when fall returns, I’m ready for it. 😉   Just as the season is changing the availability of some heavier fabrics are no longer available at Mood’s online store. Maybe […]

Saint James Ponte Dress and Long Cardigan

Spring is in the air and a cute dress is a much needed item for me.  I wanted a dress that would be a good transition piece and fun to wear.  Enter Mood Fabrics’ Navy/Ecru Saint James Ponte Knit, an amazing knit, probably one of the nicest knits I have ever sewn.  I am sorry to say it is sold out in the navy/ecru colorway but  no fear there are several other option: red/navy, ecru/gray, navy/kelly. or take a look at all the color choices     My pattern for this fabulous knit, Butterick 6207,  which has raglan sleeves, neckband, […]
