Ba ba ba ba Barbara Ann(a)

While looking for inspiration to fulfill the March Mood Sewing Network challenge of creating a look inspired by a fashion designer, I: Became obsessed with all things Anna Wintour resulting in a haircut my family loathed on me. Discovered Barbara Tfank, the LA designer popularized by Michelle Obama. Renewed my love of Ralph Lauren. Anna Wintour’s feminine flared skirts and dresses captivated me. Ralph Lauren’s cheerful black and white floral clothes dominated much of his Spring RTW runway show, and Barbara Tfank spelled it out with beautiful embroidered black and white linen garments(click here). As a result I departed from […]

Separates Inspired by the Colors of Spring

When it was decided that we would all be sewing pieces inspired by the Spring 2014 runway, my mind immediately panicked. Runway? I can honestly say I have never even so much as glanced at a series of runway photos, let alone determined an outfit based on what I saw (I’m not saying this in an ~ooh, I’m so cool I just don’t even pay attention to fashion~ way, more like, yo clueless!). Furthermore, it’s difficult for me to grab “inspiration” from something without just blatantly copying it. I spent an entire month agonizing over designers, pouring over runway sets […]

Shimmering Separates, Still Single

It’s weird, but there’s a specific time of day, in each specific season, when I can’t get enough of the skewed view from our apartment.  It’s well into cocktail hour as I type this, and the light hitting the buildings that fill our windows can’t be described as sun, more as afterglow.  indeed, even the use of “building” as plural is going a bit far.  There are two beasts that eat our glass rectangles onto the world, both of different brick, different perspective even, blonde diagonal on left and straight ahead redhead on right, and when you stare at the […]

Skirt, Top and Bomber Jacket from Tracy Reese Inspiration

Deciding on a designer for this month’s challenge was a bit difficult for me but when I viewed the collection from Tracy Reese I knew this one was for me. I liked her bright colors, interesting details and fun fabrics. My plan was three pieces that would work well together, a skirt, top with a neckline detail and a bomber jacket. That plan changed to three separates to stretch my spring wardrobe, The fabrics played an integral part in my challenge pieces, which was heading in a different colorway until these three fabrics were in the new section at Mood […]

Men’s Miyake-Inspired Shirt, Skirt, and Pleated Shawl

This month on the Mood Sewing Network our challenge is to sew something inspired by a runway look for Spring/Summer 2014. With my love of avant-garde Japanese fashion, the choice of designer was easy: Issey Miyake.  I drew both on Miyake’s latest looks that combine unconventional, bold pattern-mixing, and Miyake’s trademark use of pleated fabric and androgenous silhouettes. For my shirt, I worked with three delicate Italian cotton voiles from Mood Fabrics.  The red, white, and blue floral and gold, pink, and pale green print (by Marc Jacobs) have a crisp, organza-like texture.  Cuffs and collar band are done in […]

Wool Crepe Colorblocked Pencil Skirt

Each snowflake that falls in the South sells a gallon of milk, a loaf of bread or a package of batteries. Panic sets in around here as it did with me, but fortunately it was just what I needed to get out of my sewing slump. My mojo was suffering and I decided to take my own advice – make a pencil skirt. After stocking the fridge and loading the flashlights with fresh batteries I raced to JoAnn’s for a zipper, but stayed in the store nearly two hours looking at Burda patterns. I bought eight. Suddenly, the thought of […]

Perky Stretch-Cotton Pencil Skirt

This winter has been a very long and very cold one for much of the United States and I for one am getting quite tired of it. So if I can’t beat the cold temperatures, my wardrobe can add some warmth to winter. Color…. bright and bold to counteract white snow and gray skies. For the brightest and bold color, I picked Mood Fabrics’ Nanette Lepore Orange Retro Print Stretch Cotton. It is just a mid-winter’s dream. I love this pop of color and it gives me hope spring is coming (only 40-some days away). My pattern for this fabulous […]

Shiny, Glossy, Patent-y Pencil Skirt

Everything leather and leather-ish is very popular this season. Leather is not only the new black, but the new everything and it’s everywhere. And I’ve been playing with all forms of it. While searching Mood Fabric’s index, I discovered this great Donna Karan Black Solid Faux Leather, which is a black patent vinyl with a black fleece back and I had to have it! When I bought it, it said heavyweight, so I wasn’t sure what I would make. I just knew that it looked interesting and I bought several yards. When I pulled it from the box, it was indeed […]

Cozy, Woolly Separates

Who doesn’t love to wear wool in the winter time? I feel like a broken record when I start singing the praises of wool, but foreal you guys—this stuff is awesome. It’s super warm and cozy, breathes very well (so you don’t get overheated in all that warm and cozy-ness), and it’s also antimicrobial, which means it naturally repels odors. Which means now you know why I wear so much wool and still manage to keep up with the laundry – it doesn’t need to be washed very frequently! Airing out is fine for day-to-day. Yay for being lazy! So […]
