Marc Jacobs Silk Faille Pencil Skirt

Good afternoon, y’all! I don’t know about you, but my July absolutely flew by. In between houseguests and summer trips, this was one packed month. That’s especially true, when you factor in my favorite summer happening: the Romance Writers of America National Conference! Each July, 3000 genre fiction authors descend on one city and talk about our industry, books, and latest authorial gossip. With three days of business meetings and workshops, capped off by a fancy gala, it’s also a great excuse to dress up a bit. Originally, I had planned to make a formal gown for the awards gala, […]

Silk Crepe De Chine Romper

Last week we housed 5 adults and 2 children for 24 hours. And all I got was this awesome Silk Crepe De Chine thingamajig. One of said adults, the six-foot-fifty-eight one, was sporting a fabulous, flowy, silky pants-thing that had holes for your footsies and shirring at the top.  This dame, let’s call her The Diva, wore them because she knew I would specifically be fascinated by them.  Indeed I was.  I made her take them off that evening so’s I could study ’em. With two screaming nutjobs in the house in various states of undress, it wasn’t weird at […]

A Comfy Knit Skirt For This Preggo Girl

All the maternity skirts currently available for sale fall into three categories: black/navy/gray, denim or striped maxi. If you want any type of bright color or pattern, you are out of luck. Or, if you know how to sew, you make your own! It was pretty much love at first site when I spotted this Theory yellow striped ponte at Mood Fabrics. It’s yellow, is a ponte knit which is the perfect weight fabric for a skirt, and it’s visually interesting with the stripes. I paired it with Burda 7023, labeled “super easy”, and that was no lie. It only […]

Minty Summer Separates!

Hi, guys! Hope you’re all well! So, today’s project is a bit of a different one for me. I’ve been wanting a full, mint green skirt for the longest time, and it’s finally warm enough to wear one! I chose a creamy cotton voile (here’s a similar color that’s absolutely gorgeous!), thinking it would be nice and light for summer. It’s not totally opaque, but I left it unlined- I can always wear a slip if I want to. You don’t really need a pattern for a skirt this simple, but I was inspired by Pattern Runway’s free Easy Gathered […]

Hotter Than July In Marigold Tribal Print Twill and Mustard Striped Washed Silk

Summer has finally arrived in Chicago.  Well, at least it feels like summer.  Last weekend temperatures were in the 90’s with a lot of humidity.  HOT! This Mood Fabric project was the perfect kick off for my summer wardrobe. At first sight, I fell in love with this Marigold Tribal-Print Twill by Oscar de La Renta.  This funky tribal medium weight twill has a stiff drape and is great for pencil skirts and shorts.  I decided to pair this with a sassy little Burda skirt featured in the Burda magazine February 2011 issue.  I only glanced at the construction details.  […]

Sporty Chic Separates

As much as a I love a beautiful dress, great separates keep my wardrobe moving on a daily basis.  Sure, a dress is the epitome of one-piece dressing ease.  But the ability to rework separates again and again, makes creating new outfit possibilities endless! Lately, I’ve been working on filling gaps in my wardrobe and I discovered that I need more knit tops that are wash and go and easy to throw on.  And a striped nautical knit top is a perfect addition.  I chose a beautiful black and ivory striped viscose fabric that was so popular that it’s sold […]

Welcoming Spring With Ikat and Yellow

Y’all, it’s confession time: I am a sewing copycat. Last month, I bumped into a friend on campus and went absolutely nuts over her outfit–a simple cream sweater and utterly gorgeous navy-and-cream ikat pencil skirt. As with most clothes I covet, I started scheming up a version of my own. Isn’t that a fantastic perk of sewing? If we see something gorgeous, we’re not constrained by budget or retail trends. If you can think it, you can sew it! (Did anyone else just start humming “The Think System” ditty from The Music Man? No, only me?) Even better, the […]

Italian Printed Denim Mini Skirt

G’day! I guess that is what you might expect someone to say from ‘Down Under’ Australia. I’m Lizzy of Sew Busy Lizzy, one of the new Mood Sewing Network bloggers. I can’t tell you how delighted I was to be asked by Mood Fabrics NYC to be part of their Mood Sewing Network. So many bloggers I have followed and admired since I started blogging are part of this network. In fact I’m so enamoured of Mood Fabrics it was already on my travel plans for 2014! Yes I will be in NY in October this year – I can’t […]

Summery Separates Inspired by Rachel Comey

Hi everyone! Hope you’re all doing well today, the very last day of March! March holds a special place in my heart because it is my birthday month (and the majority of my family’s birthdays as well) and this year was even more fun because I got to try my hand at my first ever sewing challenge with the Mood Sewing Network! When we were given the task to choose a designer and make a completely unique look inspired by their 2014 spring runway collection I was pretty psyched – and a little nervous! This felt like being back in […]
