Fit and Flare Skirt In Yummy Rebecca Taylor Wool

I’ve been eying this lovely black with red polka dotted wool from Mood fabrics for awhile now but couldn’t quite envision what I wanted to make out of it. It’s been sitting in one of my many Mood boards just waiting patiently. I tend to go for bright/sparkly/interesting fabrics and this black wool is more quiet and subdued. But then I was checking through some of my boards hunting for fabrics that have sold out since I added them – as you do if you are as fabric obsessed as I am – and I saw that it was almost […]

The Perfect Staple: Theory Dark Denim Skirt

When it comes to sewing, I’m a “frosting” girl. Give me lush florals, party dresses, and silk linings every time! Unfortunately, this means that on casual days my wardrobe is rather bland: jeans, sweaters, and t-shirts. For the next few months, I’m going to focus on those in-between, unloved parts of my wardrobe, so that they too reflect my personal style. I’ve gone through everything, donated a few heaping bags of regularly ignored pieces, and plan on (beautifully) filling the gaps. First up on my list? A simple denim skirt. I needed something cute to wear with all those sweaters, […]

A Silk and Cotton Graphic Floral Pencil Skirt

It’s been a crazy month for me, so I wanted a bit of a pick-me-up sewing project.  This pencil skirt was perfect.  I saw this silk and cotton graphic print at Mood Fabrics online (no longer available, but I think these silk twills from Mood might be similar) and just had to have it.  At first I was envisioning a mini skirt, something like Vogue V1247 (previously made here).  But, even though I’d swatched the fabric, I was still surprised by how big the print was when it arrived. It would have been nearly impossible to get a full flower burst into the […]

White hot leather mini!

Why hello there! I hope everyone’s been enjoying their autumn, and you’re all gearing up for some Halloween festivities this week! I’ll probably be hunkering down at home, donning sweatpants, and curling up with a giant bowl of popcorn and some knitting to watch a lame, not-so-scary scary movie (because I’m a giant wuss). We are just party animals over here! I’ve been pretty excited that the weather here has decided to cool down just a smidgen so I can start pulling out all the lovely, heavier weight fabrics I’ve been hoarding since late summer. I was absolutely ecstatic to see […]

A Tweed Skirt for Autumn

There are some projects that begin so perfectly, with just the right match of fabric to pattern, that the universe has to step in and make things more exciting, so that a seamstress doesn’t get too smug. That’s my theory anyhow. Despite being a relatively straightforward pattern, the making of this skirt was filled with calamity! You wouldn’t know to look at it now, of course. It’s all tweedy and prim, with that lovely houndstooth lulling one into dreams of autumn, as if it hasn’t caused a thousand headaches. Don’t be fooled. This skirt may be cute, but it’s evil. […]

Bereft From Brocade

Hands down one of the best things about temperatures dropping: brocade. A few short years ago I would have laughed like hell if you told me I’d say that. Now Fall hits and just about all I can think of is brocade. I walked into Mood Fabrics for something, I really don’t remember what, but I do clearly recall I had a list, a gameplan, and all carefully laid out thoughts left my head at a full tilt boogie when I saw this Zac Posen Floral Silk Brocade. SILK Brocade. Gaaaaaaaaaah. I can haz SILK Brocade?! I squeezed the pathetic list […]

Embroidered Silk Blouse and Twill Wrap Skirt

For this month’s Mood Sewing Network project I worked with two very different fabrics to make separates. First up is the blouse, for which I used this Marc Jacobs Silk with Embroidered Dots which I’ve had my eye on for months! It’s a beautiful silk crepe and when you get close up you realise the polka dots are actually formed of dense embroidery making it wonderfully unique. I was a little apprehensive about working with a fabric which sounded like it could be quite tricky, especially for a project with some fiddly aspects, but I took my time and had […]

Embroidered Linen Skirt

Hey gang! We are really in the dog days of summer here in East Texas, with temperatures hovering near triple digits.  In heat like this, there’s really no way to stay cool – honestly, I’ve given up trying! Instead I just put on a pretty outfit that makes me smile, even if I am a wilting flower well before noon! This month’s make for the Mood Sewing Network was one of those times when my first glance at a fabric immediately inspires a whole outfit, complete with lipstick colors and hairstyle. It’s rare that this happens to me, but when […]

Marc Jacobs Silk Faille Pencil Skirt

Good afternoon, y’all! I don’t know about you, but my July absolutely flew by. In between houseguests and summer trips, this was one packed month. That’s especially true, when you factor in my favorite summer happening: the Romance Writers of America National Conference! Each July, 3000 genre fiction authors descend on one city and talk about our industry, books, and latest authorial gossip. With three days of business meetings and workshops, capped off by a fancy gala, it’s also a great excuse to dress up a bit. Originally, I had planned to make a formal gown for the awards gala, […]
