DVF Lace, Part II

As promised, I’m back with the remainder of the DVF Cotton Lace project. Some people are born to sew couture. It relaxes them they say…… I get that, but before undertaking a couture garment, I always take a deep breath and try to prepare myself for the time commitment couture sewing requires. To date, I have underestimated the time commitment of every project. But now it’s time to celebrate! As mentioned in my last Mood Sewing Network post, I ordered the lilac DVF cotton lace from Mood Fabrics last Spring, envisioning a two-piece dress for my daughter’s Bridesmaids’ luncheon. The dress missed […]

Printed Silk Maxi Skirt and Bamboo Jersey Bodysuit

Spring finally seems to have arrived here in London, which is a good job as I jumped the gun a little hoping for the warmer weather with my most recent handmade ensemble for the Mood Sewing Network! This gorgeous abstract printed silk georgette jumped out at me from the computer screen back at the end of last year and I couldn’t resist using that month’s allowance to snap up a few yards despite my plans for it being a garment more suited to the warmer months! It’s exactly the kind of organic and non-descript print that I like; to me […]

DVF Cotton Lace Skirt

Just a skirt?…… Not to me! When the DVF floral bordered cotton lace arrived on my doorstep last Spring from Mood Fabrics, I knew it deserved the royal treatment, but I didn’t expect this special fabric to be in queue for nearly a year. Greetings from Scottsdale, Arizona, the new hometown of my daughter and son-in-law.  It’s only 2,019 miles away from South Carolina. 😉 I once heard Susan Khalje say that she could keep someone busy for an entire week sewing a pencil skirt. Now, I know what she means, for I spent one week making my couture pencil […]

A Trio of Wool, Fringe + Leather

This outfit took longer to make than it’s taking for Spring to decide to show her face. Mostly because I spent two days agonizing over how to place this wooly, almost blanket like, large scale print on a long sleeved Burdastyle balloon coat pattern. Had to hack oodles of length off the bodice to get away with my yard and a quarter…was left with whispers of fabric and a somewhat satisfactory placement… AND IN THE END I CUT THE DANG SLEEVES OFF THE THING ANYWAY. Then it was necessary to go to crazytown and zigzag topstitch over several yards […]

Green Embroidered Wool Skirt

I found this interesting wool on Mood Fabrics’ website by searching the word “sequins”. Wool, sequins, embroidery, and flowers in yellow? That’s definitely my kind of fabric. I knew it was wide with a sequined border on both edges, so I only got a yard thinking I would make some sort of skirt. Making my TNT straight skirt seemed too boring, so I went looking for a pattern where I could use the sequined border in a more interesting manner. Enter this OOP Tracy Reese pattern, Vogue 1092. I always gravitate to unusual designs and absolutely loved the way this […]

A Wild Cheetah-Print Circle Skirt

Good morning, friends! How has your February been? Mine has gone by entirely too quickly, a blur of long work days and frolic-filled weekends. It’s also been a time of introspection, style-wise. As I’ve written recently, I’ve been in the mood for a bit more glamour in my wardrobe. Less pastels, more vivid color. Instead of skirts covered in adorable cats, I’ve craved, well…a skirt covered in a different cat, entirely! Maybe I watched too many Ann-Margret movies, as a child, but nothing screams glamour to me like a good animal print garment. When done right, it’s the chicest print […]

Floral Marc Jacobs Print Skirt

Hey gang!! I hope everyone is surviving winter, whatever that means for you. We’ve had some glorious early spring weather ’round my neck of the woods the past few days. All my plants are incredibly confused! I keep telling them to not rush it, that it’s going to get cold again, but unfortunately I have not learned how to speak plant language yet, so I don’t think they’re getting the message… This month I’ve got a fun new skirt to show you.  I’ve realized a bit of a pattern with my fabric purchases in the last year – if I […]

Teal Wool Pencil Skirt

I seem to be in the mood for pencil skirts lately. I don’t quite understand my draw to them right now since they’re not ideal daily wear for someone who currently spends most of their time sitting on the floor reading books and playing blocks with toddlers.  Maybe it’s my subconscious mind’s way of telling me that I could stand to spend more time with adults?! This particular pencil skirt is the BurdaStyle Jenny basic skirt with a shortened waist and an added kick pleat, and it’s made using one of Mood Fabric’s double-faced wools.  The wool is thick and spongy and would make a beautiful unlined coat since being […]

A Bright Winter Ensemble

Yeah, I know. I kind of went Sgt Pepper’s on these photos. January will do that to me. Lack of light, lack of warmth, lack of photographer. The trifecta. But let’s play Where’s Waldo and find my garment in this riotous, ham handed, amateur photoshopped collage! Can you find the rectangle of sweater knit above? That’s my “self drafted” H&M knockoff, made with some famous designer novelty knit (similar here). I succumbed to Black Friday and bought a couple of drapey sweaters at The Beast, and upon further perusal, found they were really two large rectangles with two small rectangles […]
