December denial? Men’s shorts and short-sleeve shirt!

Who sews short sleeve shirts and shorts in December? I do! This month I sewed for an upcoming vacation to a tropical clime where I’ll be needing warm-weather clothes. I had two great Mood Fabrics to inspire me: a unique cotton seersucker like shirting from Opening Ceremony (not available online, unfortunately) and a beefy black cotton blend knit.  (Mood sells some beautiful black knits online, in a variety of weights. Check them out here.) For my shirt, I used a vintage 1958 McCall’s men’s convertible collar shirt pattern, 4723 (below).  I love the boxy cut of 1950’s shirt patterns, a […]

Men’s Swiss Dot Cotton Shirt and Linen Shorts

The summer sewing continues! This month I created two garments for my partner, Michael. The first is a short-sleeve shirt made from a lightweight cotton Swiss dot floral fabric I found at Mood Fabrics in NYC. (Check out Mood’s online selection of dotted Swiss fabrics here.)  It doesn’t get more summery than that! The pattern I used is Butterick 5579 (below), in a Size 40. I made only a few changes to the pattern.  I shortened the sleeves (and cuffed them), eliminated the attached front button placket (opting for a fold-back front placket instead), and narrowed the collar to give […]

Tropical Denim Shorts and Back Cut Out Tee

This month’s project for the Mood Sewing Network was all about sewing a holiday wardrobe. With a couple of trips planned I had my eye out for summer print fabrics which I’d still be able to get some wear out of at home in London. This Tropically Printed Denim jumped right out at me and I was ordering it without a second thought. Unfortunately it’s now sold out in both colour ways which I’m not surprised about. It was one of those instances when you see the fabric and instantly know what you want to make it into. In this […]

Kitty Cat Border Print Wrap Shorts

I try to steer clear of juvenile fabrics since I’m in my *cough* late 30’s and don’t want to appear like I’m desperately hanging on to my youth, but this fabric just begged me to buy it. It’s a purple and red cat print bamboo twill from Moodfabric.com, and is still available as of this morning. Mood labeled it as being a “Famous Designer” fabric but I’ll just spill the beans and tell you it’s from Anna Sui. It’s long and thin with a border of maroon and red stripes and I had no idea what I was going to […]

Men’s Geometric Print Shirt and Linen Shorts

Hurray for summer sewing! Short sleeve shirts and shorts are two of my favorite things to sew, maybe because I associate them so closely with warm weather and summer vacations. I found a beautiful geometric cotton print at Mood Fabrics in NYC last month and decided it would make a perfect summer shirt.  (Mood has a vast online selection of beautiful cotton prints.  This one is similar to the one I found in the New York store.) I used vintage Simplicity 6955, a men’s shirt pattern from 1966, because I like the preppy cut, though I chose to narrow the […]

Introducing the boxtop, a new menswear garment!

Men’s fashion doesn’t change very quickly, so every once in a while I like to give it a little push. The idea of combining a dress shirt with boxers isn’t original to me. Back in the 1920’s, Arrow offered something similar.  (Notice how the Arrow shirt buttons up the right leg.) More recently, a French company has begun marketing a shirt/boxer combo called the calchemise, which I wrote about earlier this month on my blog.  My readers were ambivalent and, initially, I was too.  So I decided to make one and see for myself. For my version, I used a […]

The Last Shirts and Shorts of Summer

It’s only mid-August, but the mornings here in New York City already feel cooler and I’ve begun noticing dried leaves on the sidewalks.  Fall is on its way. But hold on — I haven’t even gone on summer vacation yet: I still need some summer togs suitable for a week at the beach! I bought these two lightweight cottons — a lilac swiss dot and a boldly printed lawn — last summer but I never used them.   (You can see Mood Fabrics’ selection of swiss dot fabrics here and cotton prints here.) This summer, I decided to turn them […]

Summer Eyelet

Today’s outfit inspiration comes from a completely new realm for me – watercolor painting! I signed up for a watercolor painting class earlier this summer, and I’ve really been enjoying the process of learning something new – and the results that come with it! This is one of the paintings I did in my final class; no, it wasn’t a fashion illustration class, but the teacher was open to letting us paint whatever wanted (and in my case, it was fashion illustration! Which amused her to no end :)). I had some swatches from Mood Fabrics that I knew I […]

Men’s Lace Shirt and Cotton Jersey Shorts

I’ve been thinking about lace a lot this spring. Originally I bought this gorgeous black cotton lace with the intention of using it for an overlay.  What I liked most about it — aside from the beautiful floral pattern — was that it could be trimmed to create a finished scalloped edge.  (You can check out Mood Fabrics’ selection of cotton lace here.) Continuing my passion for pattern mixing, I decided to create a short-sleeve shirt using the lace in combination with a lovely Italian floral cotton and classic black and white gingham.  (You can see Mood’s selection of ginghams […]
