Men’s Cotton Slacks and Zip-Front Hoodie

The arrival of spring calls for spring sewing! At Mood Fabrics in NYC I found two beautiful lightweight fabrics I knew I could turn into some classic garments to carry me into the (eagerly awaited) warm weather. The first was a smooth cotton woven with a crisp hand, perfect for a pair of spring or summer dress pants. (You can find similar fabric at Mood here, here, and here.) My second fabric was a denim-colored, brushed cotton twill as plush and drapey as sweatshirt jersey.  I decided to use it to make a zip-front hoodie; I may use the remainder […]

Black Pants in Embossed Knit

Y’all, I’ve made some pants.   Big deal, right? I’ll bet you make pants all the time. You’re a wizard at crotch curves and the fish-eye dart and all the pants making things. Yeah. Well, in all the almost 7 years I’ve been blogging (!!!) I think I’ve made one pair of pants and one pair of knee-length crops. Oh and a pair of shorts or two. I’m not scared of them per say, it’s just that I’m more interested in making things that I can’t afford to buy or can’t find to fit me very well. Pants I can […]

Winter White and Indigo Blue: a Men’s Jeans Journey

Readers, you CAN wear white in winter — and if you’re willing to risk the odd splash, you can even wear it in the slushy snow! This month I decided to make myself jeans.  I’d purchased some pants-weight cotton twill in white at Mood Fabrics’ New York store this winter, along with a sturdy indigo cotton denim.  (You can find similar white twill at Mood Fabrics here and a broad selection of cotton denim is available here.) I used Kwik Sew 3504, an in-print men’s jeans pattern which I’d tried a few times before with good results. While I topstitched […]

Revisiting Red & Seafoam

Hey everyone! I don’t know about you, but this is about the time of year that I start really hankering for spring. I miss everything about it, especially the part about not freezing (it also doesn’t hurt that I’ve been stuck home for the past 3 days due to a really bad ice storm. Actually, I’m not complaining about that at all haha)! I’ve been trying to spring-ify my wardrobe just a little (maybe in hopes that it will make the season hurry up faster?), which means digging out all the colors I forgot about over the winter, as well […]

Stretch Denim is for Jeans

Making your own jeans can be intimidating but I went for it using a Mood Fabrics’ Theory Denim (sold out but here are many more to pick from – Mood Fabrics’ Denim) and the Ginger Jeans by Closet Case Patterns, which is named for Mood Sewing Network’s own Ginger Makes e   This denim pair is my third pair of pants from this pattern.  The first from a stretch twill from Mood Fabrics and the second from Mood Fabrics’ black suede cotton.  Each time I changed a couple things on the pattern and this denim pair I feel is a good […]

Comfy Weekend Casual with Viscose Jersey and Cotton Twill

I guess by now you can tell that I love Mood’s selection of twill.  They come in a variety of fibers, colors, and weights.  They sew like a dream and are perfect for pants, jackets, dresses and skirts. I’m still working on beefing up the ole weekend casual wardrobe.  So I chose Steven Alan medal  cotton-lcyra twill for a relaxed pair of pants (Butterick 6028).  This fabric has a soft hand similar to linen with less wrinkles. I paired the brown abstract Missoni-esque jersey print for another version of Simplicity 1317.   Let me start with the review of Simplicity […]

Denim Like Twill – Fall Wardrobe Builder

Fall is here and I don’t have enough casual wear in my wardrobe!  So this season I’ll work on beefing up my casual wear. A nice pair of jeans are a perfect start.  I found the absolute perfect Mood fabric.  Check out this cotton denim like twill.  It is gorgeous. The description  states that it has a softer hand than denim, which is true.  But I’d like to add that it feels buttery like a suede clothe.  It’s great against the skin and moves gracefully with every step.  This is a must have fabric for fall casual wear. The color […]

Pink Marc Jacobs Jumpsuit

Hello everyone! I hope you’re all enjoying your early autumn (or spring, depending on your hemisphere). Here in the Land of Endless Summer (a.k.a Texas) I’m still enduring the heat and humidity. Honestly, I can take the high temperatures, it’s the mosquitos that are driving me crazy! However, as the weather hints at cooler days ahead I’ve decided to celebrate with a fun, and gratuitously girly make! One day while I was trolling the Mood Fabrics website (like you do) I decided to venture into a new-to-me territory – polyester. I’ve always avoided synthetic fabric because of the heat and humidity issue […]

Sweaters & Skinnies for Fall!

Ok, I’ll admit – when I first started working on this outfit, the air was a LOT more fall-like than it currently is at the moment. Stupid fickle season, ha! Anyway, I’m totally a trooper so I’m modeling this outfit for y’all nonetheless (photos taken early morning before the temperatures got too high, because, woof.). My first real cold-weather makes – like I said, it’s a little early in the season here, but I like to get a head start so I can actually start wearing this stuff when the weather cools down 🙂 When I was in NYC last […]
