White Denim Jeans with Boxy Quilted Top

No white after Labor Day, how many times have we heard this?  Well, I am not following that ancient rule.  For two reasons…. 1.  I love white jeans, they go with anything and can go from casual to dressy with a few changes 2.  I have had this fabric since June and didn’t get my white jeans made! So let’s start with the denim, it is Mood Fabrics’ White Denim Blend and the description states cotton/polyester but it feels mostly cotton.  Now this fabric has no stretch, so I sewed my side seams with  3/8″ seam allowance, giving myself a […]

End-of-Summer Men’s Pants, Shirt, & Cotton Cardigan

The summer is coming to a close, alas! At this time of year I’m focused on sewing things I can still wear in the heat but which can carry me over into the cooler days to come.  I’m about to go on vacation and the weather in Cape Cod this time of year is mighty variable. Here’s what I made to take with me: Last year I sewed a shawl-collar cotton cardigan out of a beautiful blue sweater knit I found in Mood Fabrics in NYC.  At the time, I purchased the same knit in a sandy-beige colorway and it […]

Men’s Blue Linen Summer Coveralls

What does one make with three yards of blue linen from Mood Fabrics? If you’re me, you sew yourself up a pair of summer coveralls! I loved the color of this linen the moment I saw it.  Is it sky blue, azure blue, French blue, or Wedgwood blue? (I’m not very good at labeling colors.)  Regardless, I love it.  (You can check out Mood Fabrics’ selection of linen and linen blends here.) I had purchased Kwik Sew 3389, a men’s coveralls pattern, last year but wasn’t sure whether I’d actually wear coveralls, so it sat unused.  But thinking about this […]

Tigerlily Orange Top & Burnished Gold Jeans

I’m not terribly proud to admit this, but there is quite a bit of inspiration that comes by way of my boss’ closet. Before that sounds too weird, let me backtrack – I work as a Personal Assistant, and part of my job is handling the laundry (no groans here – I actually really love doing laundry. Seriously!). My employer is pretty fashionable, and LOVES shopping, so there are constantly new pieces going in the closet and getting subsequently filed away in my mental inspiration folder. Such is the case with this outfit – light colored jeans and a coral […]

Stretch cotton border print set!

Man, is my man good at making me look tall! Went for my annual physical last week, and was, as always, SHOCKED to be told I am just barely all of 5’2. Surely there’s something wrong with their equipment. I mean, look at me. I’M GIGANTIC. You know, I enjoy my delusions. Like the assumption that I can keep track of multiple sewing projects. I cannot. As my beloved grandmother always used to say, I got a head like a sieve. Actually my noodle is pretty good at multitasking. I’m at my most happy place when I’m infatuated by multiple […]

Patterned Culottes and a Stripey Tee

Hey friends! Hope everyone’s April is winding down nicely.  I have a question for all you fabric enthusiasts out there – do you buy fabric with a project in mind, or do you buy fabric, because ooh pretty?? I’d say more often than not I try to buy fabric with a project in mind, or I’ll go browsing online and see if a fabric sparks my interest and becomes the catalyst for some sewing inspiration.  But either way, once I hit the ‘buy’ button, I generally have an inkling about what I want the fabric to be used for.  Every once […]

Men’s Cotton Slacks and Zip-Front Hoodie

The arrival of spring calls for spring sewing! At Mood Fabrics in NYC I found two beautiful lightweight fabrics I knew I could turn into some classic garments to carry me into the (eagerly awaited) warm weather. The first was a smooth cotton woven with a crisp hand, perfect for a pair of spring or summer dress pants. (You can find similar fabric at Mood here, here, and here.) My second fabric was a denim-colored, brushed cotton twill as plush and drapey as sweatshirt jersey.  I decided to use it to make a zip-front hoodie; I may use the remainder […]

Black Pants in Embossed Knit

Y’all, I’ve made some pants.   Big deal, right? I’ll bet you make pants all the time. You’re a wizard at crotch curves and the fish-eye dart and all the pants making things. Yeah. Well, in all the almost 7 years I’ve been blogging (!!!) I think I’ve made one pair of pants and one pair of knee-length crops. Oh and a pair of shorts or two. I’m not scared of them per say, it’s just that I’m more interested in making things that I can’t afford to buy or can’t find to fit me very well. Pants I can […]

Winter White and Indigo Blue: a Men’s Jeans Journey

Readers, you CAN wear white in winter — and if you’re willing to risk the odd splash, you can even wear it in the slushy snow! This month I decided to make myself jeans.  I’d purchased some pants-weight cotton twill in white at Mood Fabrics’ New York store this winter, along with a sturdy indigo cotton denim.  (You can find similar white twill at Mood Fabrics here and a broad selection of cotton denim is available here.) I used Kwik Sew 3504, an in-print men’s jeans pattern which I’d tried a few times before with good results. While I topstitched […]
