An Orphan No Longer

One of the satisfying things about sewing is being able to fill holes in your wardrobe. I’ve had this RTW top for ages without wearing it much because I didn’t have anything in my closet which really paired nicely. After searching in vain for some brown leggings or fitted pants I finally gave up and decided to make my own. I swatched this chocolate cotton double knit from Mood fabrics and loved the ridges and texture. I used Vogue 8859, a Marci Tilton design. This was the first time I’ve used one of her patterns; most of them aren’t really […]

Black Wool/Cashmere Pleated Pants

‘Tis the season for cashmere! And bad photography, for that matter. It’s a shame that black fabric is the worst to photograph, because it’s the best to wear. Also, it was raining while I took these pictures, and I may or may not have have imbibed in one too many adult beverages the night before… so gimmie some slack here, is all I’m saying. Anyway, I love that it’s finally cool enough to justify wearing cashmere on a daily basis! Or, rather, a cashmere blend for those of us who aren’t quite rich enough to go full 100% ūüôā I […]

Men’s Silver Metallic Jeans

I’ve always been drawn to fabrics that have a metallic sheen. But it wasn’t until I found this Ralph Lauren metallic denim — the end of a bolt — at Mood Fabrics in New York City that I decided to take the plunge.¬† (While my fabric is unavailable online, this silver stretch faux leather seems like a good alternative). To make these jeans, I used my self-drafted jeans sloper and added elements like pockets and waistband from Kwik Sew 3504.¬† Since this fabric has Lycra in it, I did a little tweaking along the way.¬† I knew I wanted these […]

White Denim Jeans with Boxy Quilted Top

No white after Labor Day, how many times have we heard this? ¬†Well, I am not following that ancient rule. ¬†For two reasons…. 1. ¬†I love white jeans, they go with anything and can go from casual to dressy with a few changes 2. ¬†I have had this fabric since June and didn’t get my white jeans made! So let’s start with the denim, it is Mood Fabrics’ White Denim Blend¬†and the description states cotton/polyester but it feels mostly cotton. ¬†Now this fabric has no stretch, so I sewed my side seams with ¬†3/8″ seam allowance, giving myself a […]

End-of-Summer Men’s Pants, Shirt, & Cotton Cardigan

The summer is coming to a close, alas! At this time of year I’m focused on sewing things I can still wear in the heat but which can carry me over into the cooler days to come.¬† I’m about to go on vacation and the weather in Cape Cod this time of year is mighty variable. Here’s what I made to take with me: Last year I sewed a shawl-collar cotton cardigan out of a beautiful blue sweater knit I found in Mood Fabrics in NYC.¬† At the time, I purchased the same knit in a sandy-beige colorway and it […]

Men’s Blue Linen Summer Coveralls

What does one make with three yards of blue linen from Mood Fabrics? If you’re me, you sew yourself up a pair of summer coveralls! I loved the color of this linen the moment I saw it.¬† Is it sky blue, azure blue, French blue, or Wedgwood blue? (I’m not very good at labeling colors.)¬† Regardless, I love it.¬† (You can check out Mood Fabrics’ selection of linen and linen blends here.) I had purchased Kwik Sew 3389, a men’s coveralls pattern, last year but wasn’t sure whether I’d actually wear coveralls, so it sat unused.¬† But thinking about this […]

Tigerlily Orange Top & Burnished Gold Jeans

I’m not terribly proud to admit this, but there is quite a bit of inspiration that comes by way of my boss’ closet. Before that sounds too weird, let me backtrack – I work as a Personal Assistant, and part of my job is handling the laundry (no groans here – I actually really love doing laundry. Seriously!). My employer is pretty fashionable, and LOVES shopping, so there are constantly new pieces going in the closet and getting subsequently filed away in my mental inspiration folder. Such is the case with this outfit – light colored jeans and a coral […]

Stretch cotton border print set!

Man, is my man good at making me look tall! Went for my annual physical last week, and was, as always, SHOCKED to be told I am just barely all of 5’2. Surely there’s something wrong with their equipment. I mean, look at me. I’M GIGANTIC. You know, I enjoy my delusions. Like the assumption that I can keep track of multiple sewing projects. I cannot. As my beloved grandmother always used to say, I¬†got a head like a sieve. Actually my noodle is pretty good at multitasking. I’m at my most happy place when I’m infatuated by multiple […]

Patterned Culottes and a Stripey Tee

Hey friends! Hope everyone’s April is winding down nicely. ¬†I have a question for all you fabric enthusiasts out there – do you buy fabric with a project in mind, or do you buy fabric, because¬†ooh pretty?? I’d say more often than not I try to buy fabric with a project in mind, or I’ll go browsing online and see if a fabric sparks my interest and becomes the catalyst for some sewing inspiration. ¬†But either way, once I hit the ‘buy’ button, I generally have an inkling about what I want the fabric to be used for. ¬†Every once […]
