Men’s Swiss Dot Cotton Shirt and Linen Shorts

The summer sewing continues! This month I created two garments for my partner, Michael. The first is a short-sleeve shirt made from a lightweight cotton Swiss dot floral fabric I found at Mood Fabrics in NYC. (Check out Mood’s online selection of dotted Swiss fabrics here.)  It doesn’t get more summery than that! The pattern I used is Butterick 5579 (below), in a Size 40. I made only a few changes to the pattern.  I shortened the sleeves (and cuffed them), eliminated the attached front button placket (opting for a fold-back front placket instead), and narrowed the collar to give [...]

Silk Twill Dress

The fabric is doing all the work in the dress, the incredibly beautiful Mood Fabrics’ Silk Twill, which I have been loving to look at since December.  Unfortunately, this particular silk twill is sold out but no worries, Mood Fabrics has a great selection of Silk Twills     I knew I wanted a simple dress for this fabric and while on vacation I did some pattern shopping.  I picked up Simplicity 8178 which looked just like what I had pictured in my head. This pattern had  nice features, pockets (always good), elastic waist for a better fit, crossover front [...]

Rainbow Cutout!

While I was browsing the designer spring/summer collections online, I discovered these fabulous stripe dresses from Dolce and Gabbana.     Source: Net-a-Porter.com   I loved all of the elements of the dresses and the striped fabric and I decided that I could make this look work for my everyday life.  And I knew the perfect pattern I would use to execute my look. I picked Butterick 6351 and found this fabulous Italian Multicolor Striped Cotton-Lycra Sateen fabric from Mood Fabric.com. I cut the size 14 in the C cup. I added an inch to the length of the bodice [...]

Tropical Denim Shorts and Back Cut Out Tee

This month’s project for the Mood Sewing Network was all about sewing a holiday wardrobe. With a couple of trips planned I had my eye out for summer print fabrics which I’d still be able to get some wear out of at home in London. This Tropically Printed Denim jumped right out at me and I was ordering it without a second thought. Unfortunately it’s now sold out in both colour ways which I’m not surprised about. It was one of those instances when you see the fabric and instantly know what you want to make it into. In this [...]

Stretch Cotton Sateen Burda 6879

I consider myself one fortunate soul.  Each month I have an opportunity to select from a huge inventory of gorgeous fabrics at Moods online fabric store.  This month I’m pleased to showcase my second pair of Burda 6879 made with Mood’s Theory Elmwood Stretch Cotton Sateen.  It’s all around beautiful:  the texture, the ease of sewing, the look.  This lovely sateen is a medium weight sateen elastane/cotton blend.  It has a soft hand with a silky finish.  It wears easy and is not binding.  The weight is sturdy enough to make a curved waistband that cradles your waist.  Beautiful [...]

Viscose Harem Pants

This little pair of harem pants started out as an off-the-shoulder peasant dress. Basically, I succumbed to a trend which does not look good on me, realized my mistake, and then turned to another trend that does not look good on me as the solution. Ruggy is not happy with my choice. I’m actually not a fan of the look of this shape either. But the first time I made a pair of harem pants and tried them on, the feel of them was like the heavens opened up and started singing. Or maybe it was just the musical kids at rehearsals, [...]

Men’s Geometric Print Shirt and Linen Shorts

Hurray for summer sewing! Short sleeve shirts and shorts are two of my favorite things to sew, maybe because I associate them so closely with warm weather and summer vacations. I found a beautiful geometric cotton print at Mood Fabrics in NYC last month and decided it would make a perfect summer shirt.  (Mood has a vast online selection of beautiful cotton prints.  This one is similar to the one I found in the New York store.) I used vintage Simplicity 6955, a men’s shirt pattern from 1966, because I like the preppy cut, though I chose to narrow the [...]

Jersey Shirt

Solid color knit shirts are a need for my wardrobe, so this week I worked on one to fill the void in my closet.    I went with Mood Fabric’s Cobalt Viscose Jersey, which has a lovely hand and drape.  This color is sold out but there are several other colors in that same fabric or you can pick from this great selection of jersey fabrics. I went with McCall’s 7247 for this fabric which is clingy and I thought this would be a good pattern for the fabric.  One  thing to note about this pattern, it is a slim [...]

Little Black Dress

Greetings from Edisto Island! Hubby and I are on the grounds of the island’s historic Presbyterian Church now in its fourth century of worship, and which we found to be a perfect setting for photos. I was on a mission to make brightly colored summer clothes when New Look 6429 leaped off of the catalogue page. It is one of those patterns I’ve been looking for since I returned to sewing nearly 5 years ago. Cut in shoulders, cut out neckline, simple and chic, I was smitten. I also had a  beautiful piece of black stretch viscose crepe from Mood Fabrics waiting to [...]
