Late Summer Separates

Hello everyone! Happy Autumn! Here in Texas it still feels very much like summer, except that the days are getting just a smidgen shorter.  Thus, why I’m titling this post “Late Summer Separates” rather than “Autumn Separates”. This month I’ve been all about easy, casual separates that pair well with the rest of my wardrobe and can be easily transitioned into cooler weather with a sweater and boots.  Possibly not the most exciting of makes, but they are the kind of thing I love adding to my closet as I get a ton of mileage out of them. Up first […]

An Unexpected Ensemble

To be quite honest, I think sewing is making me more stubborn, yet, more patient. Both pieces in this combo were intended as something completely different than their outcome. First up, the jeans jacket, which was meant to be a peplumed affair, Simplicity 1919. I was ever so patient with this jacket, so patient my hands literally turned blue (oh, yeah, the dye on this one is strong. It’s sold out now, be grateful– but there’s a heap of Ralph Lauren denim just in). I fitted, I pressed… I changed thread colors, I topstitched with care… AND THEN RIPPED OUT AN ENTIRE FULLY LINED, CLIPPED, GRADED, TOPSTITCHED, […]

Men’s Organic Cotton Work Jacket

What can you make with two and a half yards of organic cotton twill?  Read on! Last year I’d purchased this red cotton twill in a shade Mood calls “tomato.”   It’s available not only in tomato (here), but also in a great many other beautiful colors (here).  It’s the perfect weight for jeans or a casual jacket and very easy to sew with.  It also has no spandex, which is my preference for cotton fabrics. For my project, I turned to the recently published Japanese pattern book, “Men’s Clothes For All Seasons,” which I’d picked up at the Japanese […]

Linen Woven Border Dress for Kaitlyn

Remember when it was time to transition from a college student wardrobe to a professional wardrobe?  Well, that time is now for Kaitlyn, as she will be student teaching next semester.  One day Kaitlyn asked about some of the clothes I made and one thing led to another and now she is getting some mom-made garments.  First thing was types of fabrics and what I would make with them.  That discussion lead to this Mood Fabrics’ Ralph Lauren Denim Blue Linen Woven Border Print, which I am sorry to say is sold out.  This fabric is fabulous and so fun.  Some […]

To Trim or Not To Trim?

Summer clothes are sew much fun to sew, I will make them until the end of the season. While writing The Tunic Bible, I developed a new appreciation, perhaps an obsession for working with trims. Using the ‘right’ trim whether it’s inexpensive twill tape or an ornate appliqué, easily transforms a garment from plain to sensational. Mood Fabrics has it all from lace to ribbons to chains and appliqués! To transform my latest tunic in Mood Fabrics luscious fuchsia lightweight linen, I selected an this Oscar de la Renta 2″ medallion design cotton lace. It’s fabulous. When clicking on the […]

Silk Cotton Maxi Dress

Last month, four yards of watery silk cotton slipped though my fingers for what felt like four years. Intended as my birthday dress, this beautiful headache went unworn, until I donned it for these pictures. To be honest, I put it in a time-out so many times, it has an aura of irritation about it that has yet to dissipate. Perhaps it needs a good dry cleaning, or a smudge stick. It’s not so much that I don’t like the finished product…I don’t like the memory of the work that went into it! But that’s not the fabric’s fault. The […]

Ruffles for Fall 2016!

I am currently working on transional garments, pieces that I can wear now and later. I’m also embracing some of Fall 2016’s hottest trends – Ruffles. I love a black and white outfit. These separates get the most mileage in my wardrobe. So let me tell you about these pieces:   This Black Stretch Silk Georgette top is modified from Vogue 1308, which is a jumpsuit pattern. I took the bodice and lengthened it and I eliminated the back zipper to create a tuckable, pullover top. I doubled the asymmetrical ruffle for added volume and finished them with a rolled […]

Floral Jacket

It is August, summer is winding down and I am frantically sewing.  Particularly,  those last few summer projects I really want to finish before fall gets here.  Anyone else like that?  A floral blazer has been on my list since May and I found the perfect fabric, Mood Fabrics’ Blue/White Floral Pique.  The fabric is all cotton and was a dream to sew.  If that floral isn’t quite your colors, Mood Fabrics has so many great florals.  For the lining, I went with this aqua charmeuse but used the  matte side on my jacket.    I love the shiny […]

FIRST for FALL — Men’s Camo-Print Wool Jacket!

This month I decided I was through with summer sewing and ready to create some cool cool-weather clothes. Last winter, at Mood Fabrics in New York City, I had stumbled upon a wonderful piece of camo-print wool knit — the end of a bolt, alas, and only one yard. The fabric is soft and fuzzy (maybe some mohair in it?) on the right side and has a knit backing. I knew it would be perfect for outerwear but it would have to be combined with another fabric so I’d have sufficient yardage. I decided to match the camo print with […]
