An (Unplanned)Trio of Denim Kalles

You can probably guess this pattern by sight, though you’re likely confused as to why I’m wearing it IN A SOLID. I’ve got my reasons! Reason #1: My gals Lauren & Sallie both rocked this look in denim hues of linen & chambray, and I could not get their collective loveliness out of my brain. Reason #2: I decided to be sensible. (I KNOW.) I had every intention of making this up in a painterly floral Marchesa silk gazar! But I wanted a chance to play with the lines before cutting into Marchesa. And, this stiff cotton, snagged at Mood NY, is not […]

Take One – Two Sides, Please

Fall time which means I can make a new coat, I love making coats!  I was looking through Mood’s site and found this incredible fabric.  It is Mood Fabrics’ Tan and Gray Printed Cotton Twill with Navy Reverse Face  and it is such great fabric, it deserves a long name. This fabric intrigued me right away and while I was waiting for it arrive, I started dreaming of what to sew.  I decided a statement coat, which seems to be trendy in RTW, a bit like this one.  After I have an idea, it is time for a pattern, […]

Party Time!

Raise your hand if you’re an Oscar de la Renta fan. That would be me! Frankly I should raise both hands. I think Oscar de la Renta makes the best party dresses on earth! One of these days I might just break down and buy one, but until then I’ll keep sewing O D L R inspired dresses. Mood Fabric’s Red and Black 3-D Floral Brocade has party dress written all over it, and I placed an order for 3 1/2 yards. Little did I know I would cut out three patterns before finding one to showcase the beauty and dimension […]

Border Print Maxi Skirt: with shine!

I dove into this heavyweight metallic blend about 30 seconds after arriving home with it. This is one of those lucky garments that took a day to make, and promises to be a favorite for years. I LOVE IT. As most of my quicker pieces go, this one flew by because I draped it on my form, and let the border print tell me what to do. So…no, I don’t have a pattern for this, sorry! Just start with wide rectangles, and you’re on your way to an easy pleated maxi skirt. (But *do* remember to iron the back pleats […]

Red Ticking Stripe Cotton Seersucker Fabric equals the Perfect Cotton Shirting!

I was doing a closet purge and closet organization and realized I was short on tops. I always feel like I’m missing out on great tops to just throw on with a pair of jeans, so I’m on a mission to fill in that hole in my wardrobe. This top is Simplicity 8455. I decided to used Red Ticking Stripe Cotton Seersucker. It makes a wonderful and interesting shirting fabric. Being that this fabric is 100% cotton, it cut and sewed like a dream. This fabric worked well with a lightweight fusible interfacing in places like the facing and the […]

Knit Fabric Basics

Sometimes I just need some basics, fun basics in knit.  I bought these beautiful fabrics from Mood Fabrics in August  and went to planning for fall.  First up is Mood Fabric’s Rust Stretch Knit Pique and let me tell you this fabric is so luxurious and I want all the colors.  How many colors?  There is nine!  The next fabric is Mood Fabrics’ Rust and Navy Striped Rib Knit  and as I hoped when ordering these two fabrics look so good together.   Now time to plan and a I went with New Look 6530 for the top, it was […]

Late Summer Sewing: Men’s Floral-Print Shirt!

Happy September, everybody! We still have a few weeks left of summer, which means there’s still time for some (late) summer sewing! Last month I purchased two yards of this gorgeous Liberty of London-style cotton floral print, and I knew I want to work with it right away!  (Mood Fabrics online offers a large selection of both Liberty of London and Liberty-inspired prints.  Check them out here.)  With its combination of blue, gold, and reddish-brown, it seemed like the perfect choice for a late-summer/early-fall project. I decided to sew myself a short-sleeve shirt using Vogue 8889, a fitted men’s shirt […]

Playing Favorites

My favorite food is pizza.  I try to eat it once a week. I don’t even think of denying myself this pleasure. So when I questioned myself on choosing to work with another Supreme Wax fabric, I gave myself this theory: PIZZA IS GOOD. WAX PRINT IS GOOD. YOU SHOULD THEREFORE HAVE BOTH WHENEVER YOU WANT THEM. That’s solid theorizing. With 6 yards of fabric in a cut, and summer sewing in full force, I went for maxi proportions. Cynthia Rowley for Simplicity 1802 (out of print, I think), was the object of my desire. Or the vehicle for? I […]

Embroidered Cotton Shirting Tunic

I’ve never been able to adopt the ‘keep it simple‘ philosophy, but I do believe in the ‘one step at a time‘ approach to life. In sewing that means sticking to the familiar while learning the new. While I try to grasp the details of machine embroidery I’m sewing with patterns and fabrics that leave no surprises. Mood Fabrics offers a fabulous collection of cotton shirtings, and what better backdrop for cherry red than a black and white check! I knew this smooth shirting fabric with a soft drape would be perfect for a tunic and kept my fingers crossed that it would […]
