Self-Drafted Wool Crepe Blouse and Pants

For the last two years I’ve been attending classes at Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) here in New York City.  Last semester I took a draping class that was dedicated to designing soft silhouettes like dolman sleeves, pegged skirts, and cowls. At the beginning of the semester we draped in muslin and then moved on to knit jersey and woven crepe.  For our final project, we were asked to drape a two-piece ensemble with a resort feel (think winter cruise).  One of the pieces had to include a cowl — either front neck, back neck, or underarm cowl, or a [...]

Valentino Inspired Dress with Black/Malaga Floral Roses Jacquard

Plain and simple:  there is nothing like a beautiful piece of fabric.  Just the mere fact that it is gorgeous makes you imagine how proud you feel to wear something made of it. This is the case with Mood’s Black Malaga Floral Roses Jacquard and Eggplant Polyester Lining.  The pairing of these two fabrics was a winning combination for my latest dress.   This jacquard is rich and luxurious, the pattern is intricately woven with a glossy under tone.  It has a smooth hand, unlike most brocades, but just as radiant.  The lining is perfect for [...]

Springtime Embroidered Top

This embroidered mesh from Alice + Olivia was love at first sight. When I get my hands on a fabric like this, my tendency is to go for the gold and try to make something ridiculously complicated, meant for full-on party mode. I’m glad I reigned myself in on this one, because this fabric is a garden party right off the bolt. And ridiculously complicated, even for a simple self-drafted top like this! There was a lot of HIGHLY enjoyable work involved. The seams were stitched up with tear-away stabilizer, then trimmed & bound in a flocked velvet ponte from [...]

Striped Wide Leg Crop Pants

Hollywood glam, 1940′s style is how I feel wearing these striped crop pants.  I am not that good with the fashion eras but that kept popping into my head when I was taking pictures for this blog post.  I feel quite glamorous wearing this outfit.  I think it has mostly to do with the fabric, an Italian Wool Pinstriped Wool Twill.. The Mood  Website defines Wool Twill as “Twill refers to a specific weave that features each weft yarn floating across the warp yarns in a progression of interlacings to the right or left, forming a distinct diagonal [...]

Kelly Green Silk Occasion Dress

The dress I’ve got to share with you today has been a real labour of love and I enjoyed every single second of making it. Even the whole day spent fitting the bodice! I like nothing better than a reason to sew myself something special and challenging and what better reason could I have than the wedding of my step-sister 10 days ago? I mulled over what I wanted to make for over a year and bought the fabric long before I decided on a style and pattern. When I visited Mood Fabrics NYC last April I spent a good [...]

Style Arc Head to Toe

What came first ~ the pants or the top? The pants, but let’s talk first about the top. I was about to bust to sew a cold-shoulder top. I see them everywhere, and after one attempt and mediocre result last spring I’m at it again. Fortunately, the pattern companies now offer many more selections, and I had a better vision. For this top I selected the Style Arc Cold Shoulder Knit Top. It is designed for a close fit, which fit almost perfectly without any adjustments. My fabric is a ponte knit from Mood Fabrics and I’m linking to entire collection of ponte due to [...]

McCall 7465 and Mood Reptilian Modal Jersey

M7465 – Not the best picture – It’s freezing outside.   M7465 – Yes it is starting to snow and I’m freezing   I love animal print fabric.  Mood Fabrics is a great store to find all kinds, from birds on twill to luxury leopard faux fur.    On one of my hunts for something green or teal, I found this beautiful  teal/oak leaf reptilian modal jersey,  This lightweight modal jersey has a very soft hand and is perfect for a simple dress, top or even lounge wear. I decided to make a simple pullover dress, McCall 7465, which I [...]

An Ankara Ensemble

By now you know a few of us here at the Mood Sewing Network used the month of January to dive into a “challenge” fabric. Some know it as Ankara, some as African Wax, some as Dutch Wax. I know it as YES PLEASE. I LOVE wax print. Love it, love it, love it. Did I mention I love it? This is an Osikani print, which is printed with metallic gold foil overlay. Although I always pre-wash my Ankara to soften it up, this time I decided to leave the wax in and use the stiff quality to play with [...]

Vogue 1232 – Not Your Typical African Wax Print Skirt

This was a fun project.  I enjoyed researching possible skirt styles and the sewing process.  For months I’ve thought about making something with a African wax print fabric.  So when I received the e-mail  about the January challenge, it was a welcomed surprise.  Perfect in that it would help me to decide on a print waxed cloth garment. My print, of course, was this beautiful orange, green, and blue clothe with a diamond motif.  The fabric was so easy to work with. It presses with the slightest of ease.  I actually finger pressed the hem as I sewed it [...]
