Year of the Sleeve – Voile Blouse

The sleeve for Spring 2017 seems to be the trend to have and I am jumping right onto that trend with both feet arms (in this case).  I just want so many of these looks and styles, which means I will be busy sewing statement sleeves all summer long.  For this look, I went with Mood Fabrics’ Dotted Cotton Voile (sold out) but there are several Mood Fabrics’ Voiles in stock or you can look at Mood Fabrics’ Dotted Swiss for the texture of my blouse.  On another note, Amy used this same fabric for a blouse she made for [...]

Carolina Herrera Stretch Silk Dress

I scored big time finding this beautiful Carolina Herrera Leopard Printed Stretch Silk Twill  from Mood Fabrics.  I ordered the fabric with a wrap dress in mind, but after the fabric arrived I came across a photograph of the Carolina Herrera original and decided to follow the style of the designer with a close fitting dress. I reached for a favorite pattern I have made twice before. Vogue 9047 (now out of print but available on Etsy and other online sources). While the ‘original’ dress is a sheath, my dress features an empire waist giving me more control with the fitting through [...]

Hearts on Hearts – Mood Playful Jersey Knit Kwik Sew K4028

Worn with Simplicity faux leather leggings S1372 Today I’d like to showcase a lovely light weight jersey knit, Charcoal Hearts Poly Jersey Gray/White Hearts.  The print is exactly as it’s name states.   It’s perfect for a fun, funky top or a cute little summer wrap dress.  The hand is smooth and soft, the drape has a little more body than what you’d expect in a light-weight. I can’t take credit for picking this one.  My daughter asked for it and chose Kwik Sew Knit Top K4028, View B.  This was an extremely easy sewing project.  I was done in [...]

Embroidered Cotton Voile Shirt with Italian Collar

Spring is here! In anticipation of warmer weather, a few months ago I picked up two beautiful embroidered cotton voiles from Mood Fabrics in New York City.  This month I present the first project I’ve made with one of them.  Do check out Mood’s online selection of embroidered cotton voiles here. I’ve had vintage Butterick 2305, which dates from around 1963, in my stash for some time. It has a type of collar that was new to me, an “Italian” collar that is sewn very similar to a shawl collar, with facings that extend from the front to the back [...]

Saint James Knit

Knowing I can sew a garment for a tiny fraction of the retail price simply thrills me, and is one of the reasons I continue to sew. I knew I could make the $200 Saint James Toledo striped dress I saw in a boutique in Charlotte, but I didn’t know that Mood Fabrics stocked Saint James knits ~ the very same fabrics! Upon finding Burda 6722, I knew it was meant to be. Mood offers the Saint James ponte knits in several colors, and I chose the white background with black stripes. I rarely sew Burda patterns (no reason in particular) [...]

Mo’ Winter, Mo’ Hair.

Yeah, it’s not really feeling like winter in New York, but it’s not really feeling like spring either, so you’ll allow me my playtime with words… I mean, this is a lot of layering for the end of March! (And a lot of false exposure. Sorry. I blame the gray “spring” day and the indoor lighting.) Here’s a better look at this gorgeous mohair “famous designer” knit. I could be wrong, but given my talent for sniffing out the Sui, I’m pretty sure I know the designer. It’s a thin knit, so I decided to partially line this little swacket (sweater [...]

Nanette Lepore Eyelet Tunic

When ordering fabric at Mood Fabrics, sometimes it takes me a long time to decide, just too many options and decisions.  Then there are other times, the fabric is just perfect and I cannot get it into my cart soon enough.  That is the case with this Mood Fabrics’ Nanette Lepore Cotton Embroidered Eyelet, it was so gorgeous on the computer screen and even more beautiful in person.     I knew I wanted to use a pattern to showcase the border scallop and a simple design that let the fabric be the showcase.  I went through my [...]

Fit and Flare Brown Bows Dress

Spring is almost here! What better way to start the season than with dress.  By now I’m sure you’ve noticed that my favorite thing to make is a dress. Last month I decided to “line them up” for the Spring/Summer sewing party that I scheduled with myself.  This is a solitary event that I planned for myself in hopes of getting back to spending more time in my sewing room.       This is the second dress posted for the March.  The fabric is another lovely fabric purchased from moodfabrics.com, brown bows printed on a cotton.  It is a [...]

Self-Drafted Wool Crepe Blouse and Pants

For the last two years I’ve been attending classes at Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) here in New York City.  Last semester I took a draping class that was dedicated to designing soft silhouettes like dolman sleeves, pegged skirts, and cowls. At the beginning of the semester we draped in muslin and then moved on to knit jersey and woven crepe.  For our final project, we were asked to drape a two-piece ensemble with a resort feel (think winter cruise).  One of the pieces had to include a cowl — either front neck, back neck, or underarm cowl, or a [...]
