Red Ticking Stripe Cotton Seersucker Fabric equals the Perfect Cotton Shirting!

I was doing a closet purge and closet organization and realized I was short on tops. I always feel like I’m missing out on great tops to just throw on with a pair of jeans, so I’m on a mission to fill in that hole in my wardrobe. This top is Simplicity 8455. I decided to used Red Ticking Stripe Cotton Seersucker. It makes a wonderful and interesting shirting fabric. Being that this fabric is 100% cotton, it cut and sewed like a dream. This fabric worked well with a lightweight fusible interfacing in places like the facing and the […]

Knit Fabric Basics

Sometimes I just need some basics, fun basics in knit.  I bought these beautiful fabrics from Mood Fabrics in August  and went to planning for fall.  First up is Mood Fabric’s Rust Stretch Knit Pique and let me tell you this fabric is so luxurious and I want all the colors.  How many colors?  There is nine!  The next fabric is Mood Fabrics’ Rust and Navy Striped Rib Knit  and as I hoped when ordering these two fabrics look so good together.   Now time to plan and a I went with New Look 6530 for the top, it was […]

Late Summer Sewing: Men’s Floral-Print Shirt!

Happy September, everybody! We still have a few weeks left of summer, which means there’s still time for some (late) summer sewing! Last month I purchased two yards of this gorgeous Liberty of London-style cotton floral print, and I knew I want to work with it right away!  (Mood Fabrics online offers a large selection of both Liberty of London and Liberty-inspired prints.  Check them out here.)  With its combination of blue, gold, and reddish-brown, it seemed like the perfect choice for a late-summer/early-fall project. I decided to sew myself a short-sleeve shirt using Vogue 8889, a fitted men’s shirt […]

Playing Favorites

My favorite food is pizza.  I try to eat it once a week. I don’t even think of denying myself this pleasure. So when I questioned myself on choosing to work with another Supreme Wax fabric, I gave myself this theory: PIZZA IS GOOD. WAX PRINT IS GOOD. YOU SHOULD THEREFORE HAVE BOTH WHENEVER YOU WANT THEM. That’s solid theorizing. With 6 yards of fabric in a cut, and summer sewing in full force, I went for maxi proportions. Cynthia Rowley for Simplicity 1802 (out of print, I think), was the object of my desire. Or the vehicle for? I […]

Embroidered Cotton Shirting Tunic

I’ve never been able to adopt the ‘keep it simple‘ philosophy, but I do believe in the ‘one step at a time‘ approach to life. In sewing that means sticking to the familiar while learning the new. While I try to grasp the details of machine embroidery I’m sewing with patterns and fabrics that leave no surprises. Mood Fabrics offers a fabulous collection of cotton shirtings, and what better backdrop for cherry red than a black and white check! I knew this smooth shirting fabric with a soft drape would be perfect for a tunic and kept my fingers crossed that it would […]

Beautiful cotton print becomes Beautiful shirt!

Shirtmaking is one of my favorite types of sewing. (Tailoring is a close second, but much more work.) I am extremely fortunate to live less than a mile from Mood Fabrics so, when I decided to make my partner, Michael, a shirt, I invited him to visit Mood with me. He was a bit overwhelmed by their huge selection of cotton shirting, but I helped him to narrow down his choices. His favorite was this beautiful cotton ribbon print, very much in the Liberty of London vein. (You can shop for cotton shirting at Mood Fabrics online here.) For Michael’s […]

The Baja Blue Single-Shoulder Stretch Crepe Jumpsuit

When you find a great fabric you love, you buy it multiple times! That’s what I did with this amazing Theory Baja Blue Stretch Crepe, which is unfortunately sold out. I bought this fabric last year and made this great dress and it immediately sold out then. If Mood restocks this one, you should grab it. But until then, here are some selections that I think would be great (Ralph Lauren Evening Blue Stretch Crepe, Deep Wisteria Stretch Polyester Crepe and Italian Stretch Polyester Crepe Fabric). It’s no secret that I love a jumpsuit. And I always like for my fabric to have […]

Sunny Blue Sky Striped Cotton Chambray – Simplicity 1371 and Simplicity 8389

July is the peak of summer. I love that the days are long and the sun shines so bright.  What I hate is the humidity and the extreme temperatures, and everyone has the AC set to “North Pole”.  So it can be a struggle trying to figure out what to wear. But if you plan to be outdoors, light and airy clothing is the way to go! I purchased this lovely Blue Sky Striped Cotton Chambray a few months with the thought of making a shirt.  When I pulled it from the packaging, I quickly changed my mind and decided […]

Easy Ponte Summer Separates

Hi there! Is it hot where you are? Because it sure is hot here! July is most definitely the least forgiving summer month in terms of the heat and humidity here in coastal Texas.  And, no coincidence, it also happens to be the summer month when I have the least interest in clothes of any sort! Even just looking at the prettiest of sundresses all I can think is “sweaty back”. It’s no surprise that my sewjo also takes a nosedive during the summer doldrums as well.  When wearing clothes turns into an unpleasant reality, making clothes loses a bit of […]
