Striped Jersey Dress

Summer is a busy time for me and I still want to sew or should I say I need to sew.  Sewing is a passion and when I cannot get to my sewing room, I get a little grumpy!  Anyone else like that?  That being said I have a conflict in the summer besides time.  It is the great outdoors, well, really just my yard.  I love to work in my flowers and be in the pool.  To keep from being grumpy from lack of sewing, my solution is faster projects and fabulous fabrics.  I fell in love with this […]

A Matte Viscose White Dress!

Every spring/summer season, I make a white dress. It’s basically become a tradition for me. A white dress signifies summer. My dresses vary in style, shape and fabric. I’d purchased this stunning Ralph Lauren White Viscose Matte Jersey for another project. But since I didn’t order a swatch, I didn’t realize just how lightweight and translucent the fabric would be. So I had to think through how I would use this fabric. I decided on McCall’s 7591. I felt the silhouette would be perfect. And I was right. This fabric is gorgeous and it was not difficult to work with. […]

Floral Linen Pants for Summer!

Call me old-fashioned, but I still consider Memorial Day the official start of linen season. And this year I begin the season with a special pair of linen pants, made from a pattern I drafted myself! At Mood Fabrics in NYC, I recently found a bold linen floral print with a “closeout” tag.  This fabric had a heavy drape and a relatvely coarse hand. What could I make with it? Given the weight and the drape, it seemed ideal for a pair of pants.  I pre-washed and dried my linen–my normal routine before sewing–and it laundered beautifully.  (Linen prints make […]

Gold Stripes and Ivory Creme – Vogue 8747 and McCall 5818

I’m so happy to final post about this shirt that I made with Mood’s beautiful Italian Amber Striped Cotton-Rayon Shirting.  This is one gorgeous textile.  And I’m not just saying that because I’m a Mood blogger.  This is a definite must have fabric; you should get it!     The title color is “amber”, but I call it gold.  The online photo does not show the richness of the colors nor does it show the luster.  The sheen is not gaudy like some ultra shiny satin fabrics.  It’s luminous with gives an air of sophistication.  The striped pattern […]

Wide-Leg Seersucker Pants

I didn’t know I wanted a pair of wide-leg beach pants until the Blue and White Bengal Cotton Seersucker arrived from Mood Fabrics. Seriously, I was planning a dress with a ruffle collar, but a new vision appeared once I opened the package. This is no pinstripe seersucker, but a lovely light and airy fabric featuring 1/4″ stripes.  It is slightly puckered with a wonderful drape and is suitable for several garments. As one who almost always prefers a slim silhouette, I was ready for something different and pulled an old Vogue pattern from my stash. (The pattern is out of […]

White Cotton Lawn Shirt, Early-Sixties Style!

There’s something about white shirts I adore: they’re clean, crisp, and high-contrast. I’d picked up up some lovely white cotton lawn at Mood Fabrics in NYC (available online here) and knew it would be perfect for a summer shirt. Lawn is a lightweight cotton weave with a crisper hand than, say, voile. It’s semi-transparent, and the weave is often easily visible. You probably know by now that I’m a big fan of vintage styles and own a collection of vintage sewing patterns which I often use for my projects. I made this shirt using Simplicity 4971, a men’s shirt and […]

Stretch Cotton Terry Dress for Graduation

This coming weekend is a busy one for our family, it is a nurse pinning, three graduations and Mother’s Day.  Well, celebrations of this nature calls for a new dress for Mom.  I loved this Mood Fabrics’ Taupe/Mocha/Black/Red Cotton Stretch Terry and thought it would work great for a dress.  I want to note that even though the fabric says terry in the description, it is a lightweight knit and I don’t feel it has that terry “feel”.    The knit will be perfect for s graduation and not look wrinkled after all that sitting.     I went with […]

A Jacket for Woodland Scuba Diving

I’m sorry, I just really don’t know what to SAY. This look is so far from “me,” I’m wondering if I was possessed during the making of it. Surely, I had some of my wits about me, because I used my infinitely hackable TNT By Hand London Victoria Blazer… But most of my wits went running merrily out Mood’s front door when I ogled this woodland scene, printed on neoprene. Or rather, scuba. I believe the classification of scuba means designer neoprene. Because this, of course, is Anna Sui. No one believed it as I lugged this bolt of crazy around Mood NY’s top […]

Year of the Sleeve – Voile Blouse

The sleeve for Spring 2017 seems to be the trend to have and I am jumping right onto that trend with both feet arms (in this case).  I just want so many of these looks and styles, which means I will be busy sewing statement sleeves all summer long.  For this look, I went with Mood Fabrics’ Dotted Cotton Voile (sold out) but there are several Mood Fabrics’ Voiles in stock or you can look at Mood Fabrics’ Dotted Swiss for the texture of my blouse.  On another note, Amy used this same fabric for a blouse she made for […]
