Three Cozy Sweaters

Okay, it is cold here, which really is normal for the end of December and all I want to wear is warm and cozy.  This Mood Fabrics’ Italian Gray French Terry is perfect, it looks just like a chunky sweater knit but it is really a comfy sweatshirt! In November on Instagram I started seeing posts about One Week One Pattern and that interested me.  What is One Week One Pattern?  One Week, One Pattern is a photo challenge to try and get as many sewists as possible making the most out of their sewing patterns, by wearing garments […]

A Furry Happy New Year!

I have been wanting to make myself a faux fur coat for a long time. This winter I finally took the plunge! At Mood Fabrics in New York City, I purchased 1 3/4 yards of a lustrous high-pile black faux fur.  It didn’t really look like an imitation of an animal — mink, maybe?   I thought it looked elegant and — most importantly — wearable.  While I love to look at some of the more “out-there” fake furs, I didn’t see myself wearing any of them. (You can see Mood’s online selection of fake fur here.) I wanted my […]

Merry & Bright!

If you’re looking for a reason to be Merry & Bright this season, look no further than Mood Fabrics!  Sequins galore abound this season on the store’s website, and I fell right in line upon seeing the glittering silver baby sequined fabric. To keep the focus on the fabric, I kept it simple with a shift dress using  New Look 6524 as my base pattern. Following Maria Denmark’s tutorial I removed the bust dart for a clean front bodice. The sequins are sewn on mesh and the fabric tends to s t r e t c h easily. Staystiching the shoulders, armscye […]

Periwinkle Silk Dupioni 1890’s Historical Costume

Hello everyone! Today I’m really excited to share a project with you that has been my focus for many months now – my late Victorian walking suit! Some of you may remember last year when I made my first historical costume for a Victorian Christmas event here in Galveston. I had such a great time, and learned so much making that costume that I was excited to try my hand at another for this year. And of course, none of this would be possible without Mood Fabrics! This year I really wanted my costume to be historically accurate to a […]

Little Black Dress in Rag & Bone Black Polyester Crepe – Vogue 9239 View F

OMG!  It’s been such a long time since I last blogged.  I’ve been struggling with projects and time to write it all down to share it with you.  Finally, today I was able to get a few pictures, some not the best quality, but good enough to show you my latest dress. Months ago, I came up with the notion of making some solid color dresses.  As I look through my wardrobe, I decided that I didn’t have any “new” solid black dresses.  So I search the Mood online fabric store and found this beautiful Rag and Bone black polyester […]

Blue Jacquard Vest

The temperatures here have been so mild, which is nothing to complain about at all.  The above normal temperatures call for a garment perfect for the nice weather.  A new vest using Simplicity 1499  and the perfect match, Mood Fabrics’ Italian Cobalt Blue Paisley Jacquard.  This knit is just a bit heavier and full of texture.   These two fabric features made it a good choice for my vest.     I used some black ponte in my stash to trim my vest but Mood Fabrics has several black pontes.   One thing with the pattern (yes, made it before) the armholes […]

A Cardigan Sweater for Mom!

I don’t sew knits very often, but when I do, I most enjoy working with sweater knits. Unlike jerseys, sweater knits tend to be thick and stable, making them easier to sew. They are generally woven from wool or wool blends, though I’ve worked with cotton blend sweater knits too.  (You can check out Mood Fabrics’ selection of sweater knits here.)  I imagine it would take a lot longer to knit a sweater than it would to sew a sweater from a sweater knit fabric. Gratification isn’t exactly instant, but it’s faster! For this month’s project, I purchased two yards […]

Basic Black!

While many patterns were hacked to create this dress, I can happily state that every inch of its fabric is from Mood. 🙂 It was time for a new black winter dress; an all purpose dress to wear whenever and wherever. My inspiration came from the current Oscar de la Renta Ready to Wear collection. I love the way this dress skims the body, but I had no pattern that included all of its features. After using bits and pieces from several patterns, I’m calling this The McVoguerick Tunicbiblicity dress. While it was an absolute pain to put this dress together, […]

A non-traditional Dirndl for Oktoberfest

Hello everyone! As I’m writing this, it’s Halloween, so Happy Halloween! October is one of my favorite months because not only am I a sucker for Halloween, but it’s also the time of year when the end of summer is in sight, and it marks the start of Festival Season here in Galveston.  After the beach season ends for the year, the island tries to make up for the lack of tourist economy by hosting big festivals throughout the winter months. There’s the Lonestar Biker Rally, Dickens on the Strand, Mardi Gras, and, my personal favorite, Oktoberfest! I love Oktoberfest […]
