Minty Summer Separates!

Hi, guys! Hope you’re all well! So, today’s project is a bit of a different one for me. I’ve been wanting a full, mint green skirt for the longest time, and it’s finally warm enough to wear one! I chose a creamy cotton voile (here’s a similar color that’s absolutely gorgeous!), thinking it would be nice and light for summer. It’s not totally opaque, but I left it unlined- I can always wear a slip if I want to. You don’t really need a pattern for a skirt this simple, but I was inspired by Pattern Runway’s free Easy Gathered […]

Men’s cotton-linen jacket/pants ensemble + mesh t-shirt

Summer is nearly upon us and that means summer heat. Here in New York City, however, one can’t live just in shorts and tank tops: we’re a bit more formal (well, most of the time).  The trick is to dress up in lightweight, all-natural fabrics. I found this beautiful denim-colored cotton-linen blend at Mood Fabrics and picked up three yards without a specific project in mind. (You can see Mood’s wide assortment of linen blends here.) It has a marvelous hand — crisper than pure linen and less prone to wrinkling, but still with lovely drape (especially after laundering). I […]

Strips And Stripes

When I ordered this striped cotton voile at Mood Fabrics online, I had no idea what I was going to do with it.  But white-n-black combos were on sale, and if something on sale piques my interest, that’s a chance to get enough yardage to fearlessly cut and piece and drape till I like what I see. (Apparently I’m not the only squirrel, she’s gone online, but there are more striped voiles here, and peep that blue floral one!) Signs that I am binge watching Game Of Thrones: there are no zips, no snaps, there are only drawstrings.  They made […]

Hotter Than July In Marigold Tribal Print Twill and Mustard Striped Washed Silk

Summer has finally arrived in Chicago.  Well, at least it feels like summer.  Last weekend temperatures were in the 90’s with a lot of humidity.  HOT! This Mood Fabric project was the perfect kick off for my summer wardrobe. At first sight, I fell in love with this Marigold Tribal-Print Twill by Oscar de La Renta.  This funky tribal medium weight twill has a stiff drape and is great for pencil skirts and shorts.  I decided to pair this with a sassy little Burda skirt featured in the Burda magazine February 2011 issue.  I only glanced at the construction details.  […]

First Summer Dress – Oscar de la Renta border print

In my book, the best season of all starts today – H a p p y   S u m m e r   E v e r y o n e  ! It’s time for warm weather, fresh produce, beach vacations and carefree clothing 🙂 I’m celebrating with a new dress sewn in Oscar de la Renta’s Turquoise Border Print Cotton Twill from Mood Fabrics. I ordered the fabric last summer which is no longer available, but do check out Moods’ fabulous border prints HERE. This dress marks my second attempt at sewing a Vintage pattern. Inspired by one […]

Ikat Blazer!

Hi, guys! Hope you’re all well! This month, my project is a fun one! Now, I don’t wear much black, I never wear white, and I DO NOT wear black and white together. I just don’t! But for some reason, this print just called my name and I went with it! This is a Theory poly-cotton blend, soft and with lots of drape, that I found at Mood Fabrics NYC. (I don’t really follow designers, so I’m not searching for any specific designer’s fabric at Mood, but I seem to always find and love Theory fabrics! Whoever picks out their […]

Men’s Shawl-Collar Cotton Cardigan

I love cardigan sweaters! I found this gorgeous Italian cotton sweater knit at Mood Fabrics on a recent trip there and I couldn’t leave it behind.  It’s thick and luxurious-feeling and the colors remind me of the Mediterranean Sea.  (You can find a wide range of sweater knits available at Mood Fabrics here.) I decided to make a cotton cardigan out of it, using a vintage pattern in my stash, McCall’s 5267, from 1976.  It’s such a classic style, and I love the shawl collar, raglan sleeves, and jacket length. This sweater wasn’t difficult to make, though I confess to […]

Enveloped in Cotton Voile

I had one eyebrow permanently raised to skyscraper height the entire time I was stitching up these wrap pants. Which came first, the chicken or the egg?  I actually prepped this pattern, Simplicity 4192, last summer in a hotel room in Dallas, but never tried it out.  Then, fellow MSN’er Peter went on a streak of menswear that gave me haute couture hives each week.  Suddenly, I HAD to have a pair of wrap pants.  It was like I had never seen a pair of wrap pants before. I stalked Mood Fabric’s shelves of voile, the same shelves Herr Peter […]

Welcoming Spring With Ikat and Yellow

Y’all, it’s confession time: I am a sewing copycat. Last month, I bumped into a friend on campus and went absolutely nuts over her outfit–a simple cream sweater and utterly gorgeous navy-and-cream ikat pencil skirt. As with most clothes I covet, I started scheming up a version of my own. Isn’t that a fantastic perk of sewing? If we see something gorgeous, we’re not constrained by budget or retail trends. If you can think it, you can sew it! (Did anyone else just start humming “The Think System” ditty from The Music Man? No, only me?) Even better, the […]
