Embroidered Silk Blouse and Twill Wrap Skirt

For this month’s Mood Sewing Network project I worked with two very different fabrics to make separates. First up is the blouse, for which I used this Marc Jacobs Silk with Embroidered Dots which I’ve had my eye on for months! It’s a beautiful silk crepe and when you get close up you realise the polka dots are actually formed of dense embroidery making it wonderfully unique. I was a little apprehensive about working with a fabric which sounded like it could be quite tricky, especially for a project with some fiddly aspects, but I took my time and had [...]

Silk Crepe De Chine Romper

Last week we housed 5 adults and 2 children for 24 hours. And all I got was this awesome Silk Crepe De Chine thingamajig. One of said adults, the six-foot-fifty-eight one, was sporting a fabulous, flowy, silky pants-thing that had holes for your footsies and shirring at the top.  This dame, let’s call her The Diva, wore them because she knew I would specifically be fascinated by them.  Indeed I was.  I made her take them off that evening so’s I could study ‘em. With two screaming nutjobs in the house in various states of undress, it wasn’t weird at [...]

Men’s Cotton Herringbone Suit

I’ve been wanting to make a warm-weather suit since the spring, but this month I finally hunkered down and made it! I found an elegant pants-weight navy cotton twill at Mood Fabrics that fit the bill perfectly: it’s lightweight but sturdy enough for tailoring.  The cotton has a herringbone weave that sets it apart from standard diagonal twill fabric.  (You can see Mood’s selection of cotton twill fabrics here.) The suit has a poly half lining (drawn from my stash) and minimal interfacing to keep things casual and lightweight. I picked up my genuine horn buttons at Mood too. (Check [...]

NY Designer Print In NY

Well, lemme start by saying: if you like the looks of this NY Designer Print lightweight cotton, stop reading right now and let your fingers do the walking to its online home at Mood Fabrics, because it’s almost sold out. And it’s SO. PERFECT. Are you still here?  OH GOODY.  I mean, I do hope you grabbed some of this heaven for yourself, but I’d really love to holler at you about my dress. Yay for light & shadows giving me bullet bra!  Pinky swear, I did not make the girls pointy. This is about 4 yards of summer maxi, [...]

Playclothes!

Just as hubby started taking pictures in the backyard the snake appeared scaring us to the front where the light wasn’t as good. Ugh – it’s the one drawback about summer in the South…. …but there is nothing better than frolicking through the warm summer breezes in lightweight clothes that greet the heat with a smile. Those cute boutique gauze tops I saw last week might have been tempting had the Marc Jacobs white cotton gauze from Mood Fabrics not been on its way to my door. Sewing with gauze moved me straight into a peace, love and happiness state of [...]

My Dreamsicle Summer Dress

Summer is officially here! It’s been hot and sticky in Chicago off and on for the past several weeks. Summer time is a great time to show off brightly colored floaty skirts and dresses. Several weeks ago I stumbled upon this beautiful light weight cotton blend with a velvet flocked floral pattern and burnout flowers. I simply had to have it. So I quickly ordered five yards of it to make a special summer dress. The color of the fabric reminds me of Dreamsicle ice cream. Back in the day, when a ice cream bar was only 15 cents. Dreamsicles [...]

Minty Summer Separates!

Hi, guys! Hope you’re all well! So, today’s project is a bit of a different one for me. I’ve been wanting a full, mint green skirt for the longest time, and it’s finally warm enough to wear one! I chose a creamy cotton voile (here’s a similar color that’s absolutely gorgeous!), thinking it would be nice and light for summer. It’s not totally opaque, but I left it unlined- I can always wear a slip if I want to. You don’t really need a pattern for a skirt this simple, but I was inspired by Pattern Runway’s free Easy Gathered [...]

Men’s cotton-linen jacket/pants ensemble + mesh t-shirt

Summer is nearly upon us and that means summer heat. Here in New York City, however, one can’t live just in shorts and tank tops: we’re a bit more formal (well, most of the time).  The trick is to dress up in lightweight, all-natural fabrics. I found this beautiful denim-colored cotton-linen blend at Mood Fabrics and picked up three yards without a specific project in mind. (You can see Mood’s wide assortment of linen blends here.) It has a marvelous hand — crisper than pure linen and less prone to wrinkling, but still with lovely drape (especially after laundering). I [...]

Strips And Stripes

When I ordered this striped cotton voile at Mood Fabrics online, I had no idea what I was going to do with it.  But white-n-black combos were on sale, and if something on sale piques my interest, that’s a chance to get enough yardage to fearlessly cut and piece and drape till I like what I see. (Apparently I’m not the only squirrel, she’s gone online, but there are more striped voiles here, and peep that blue floral one!) Signs that I am binge watching Game Of Thrones: there are no zips, no snaps, there are only drawstrings.  They made [...]
