Multicolor French Cotton Jersey – Katherine Tilton Top/Butterick 5925

Happy New Year all! It’s been such a long time since I’ve posted on the Mood Sewing Network. I’m very happy to be back! Today I’m showcasing an unusual fabric, multicolor french cotton jersey (FC19834). At least it’s unusual for me. I found it months ago while searching the Mood online store. It has two layers of fabric fused together. The top layer has a burn out affect with some parts of it unattached to the under layer. Too bad it is no longer available, but there are other options to chose from. I paired this unusual textile with a […]

Wool Knit Biker Jacket

G’day, it’s Australia Day. Today, despite it being the middle of summer in Australia I’ve made a biker jacket in some fabulous wool knit suiting from Mood Fabrics NY. I have a tendency to sew out-of-season, at least I’m ready for the cold of winter or heat of summer when they arriving. This jacket is another adventure into fabrics I’ve never sewn with before! A wool knit blend, this particular one is sold out – however this heavy black wool stretch suiting would be perfect and this wool ponte would also be a dream to sew with. I spend FOREVER researching patterns for the […]

Men’s Floral Cotton Dress Shirt

I know it’s only January, but as far as my sewing goes, I’m already thinking spring. Last week at Mood Fabrics in New York, I stumbled upon a gorgeous Liberty-inspired print in cotton lawn and I grabbed enough for a shirt.  It may be freezing outside, but this vibrant floral shirting gives me hope that warmer weather is ahead.   (You can see Mood Fabrics’ selection of cheerful Liberty-inspired fabrics here.) My pattern is one I’ve only recently acquired on eBay, Butterick 6319, a mid-Fifties men’s dress shirt pattern that includes three collar variations.  I opted to make the spread collar […]

Supersize Me!

Maybe it’s just me but on January 2, I was craving an oversized shirt to hide my holiday indulgences…. and when I’m in the ugly state of mind, the one fabric I turn to is silk. This Famous Designer Black and Off-White Animal Print Crepe de Chine was the perfect antidote for my post holiday doldrums. I feel better already! My pattern of choice was Simplicity 2447 and it wasn’t just oversized, it was supersized! Before cutting into the silk I made a full muslin which required one alteration after another (discussed tomorrow on the blog). However, my new roll […]

A Bright Winter Ensemble

Yeah, I know. I kind of went Sgt Pepper’s on these photos. January will do that to me. Lack of light, lack of warmth, lack of photographer. The trifecta. But let’s play Where’s Waldo and find my garment in this riotous, ham handed, amateur photoshopped collage! Can you find the rectangle of sweater knit above? That’s my “self drafted” H&M knockoff, made with some famous designer novelty knit (similar here). I succumbed to Black Friday and bought a couple of drapey sweaters at The Beast, and upon further perusal, found they were really two large rectangles with two small rectangles […]

A Quilted Party Dress!

This is the dress that Ruggy made. No really, though he didn’t stitch an inch of it, it wouldn’t have happened without him. (And by the way, he has sewn, I’m talking wooly welt pockets and silk skirts, but that’s a subject for another time.) When I came home with this riot of peach and black batting-filled quilted poly organza, I laid it out on the floor and laughed and laughed. RUGGY! I guffawed. THIS IS GOING TO BE THE BEST WINTER PROM DRESS EVER! I took his bemused silence as total acceptance. However, as things progressed, he found […]

Men’s Wool Plaid Shacket!

OK, I know what you’re thinking: WHAT, in heaven’s name, is a “shacket”??? Readers, it’s simply slang for shirt jacket. Kind of cute, don’t you think? Last year at Mood Fabrics in NYC, I purchased three yards of a beautiful wool plaid flannel, originally intended as lining for a tweed coat but which I decided was too special to be hidden away. This month I decided to use it to make a shacket. (Mood has a wide selection of wool plaids in a variety of weights. Check them out here.) I used a regular men’s shirt pattern, but I added […]

Snuggly Plaid Flannel Shirtdress

This month’s Mood Sewing Network project was all about cosy fabrics for me! The temperatures have dropped here in London over the last couple of weeks and all I want to wear is lots of soft and warm layers. I actually ordered this Blue Plaid Soft Cotton Flannel (unfortunately now sold out but there’s still a little left in red!) back in February as part of my very first MSN order but haven’t found the perfect use for it until now. I spotted the dress below on Pinterest a little while back and knew my plaid was destined to be […]

Wool Challis Men’s Shirt with a 70’s Vibe!

There are two ways to purchase fabric: 1) with a specific project in mind, or 2) because you’re blown away by its beauty and you decide what to do with it later.  I’m usually in the former camp, but last summer I stumbled upon a stunning wool challis print I couldn’t resist.  Why was I even looking in the wool challis section of Mood Fabrics’ New York store when I didn’t even know what wool challis WAS? Kismet, I guess! (There’s not a lot of wool challis available currently at Mood Fabrics online, so please call the store if you’re […]
