A Trio of Wool, Fringe + Leather

This outfit took longer to make than it’s taking for Spring to decide to show her face. Mostly because I spent two days agonizing over how to place this wooly, almost blanket like, large scale print on a long sleeved Burdastyle balloon coat pattern. Had to hack oodles of length off the bodice to get away with my yard and a quarter…was left with whispers of fabric and a somewhat satisfactory placement… AND IN THE END I CUT THE DANG SLEEVES OFF THE THING ANYWAY. Then it was necessary to go to crazytown and zigzag topstitch over several yards […]

Hot Pink Boucle!!

How  do you like our six inches of snow? We get ridiculously excited about every winter storm warning in the South, wipe out the grocery stores and cancel events in anticipation of snow. This ‘winter storm’ I hit the sewing machine with a color hot enough to melt the ice off the patio. When the skies turned gray my eye turned to this bright pink boucle on the Mood Fabrics website. It is soft, it is happy and it is well-behaved 🙂 My pattern is Vogue 9022  sewn last month in a color block style with Mood’s black and white wool crepe. This time I […]

Winter White and Indigo Blue: a Men’s Jeans Journey

Readers, you CAN wear white in winter — and if you’re willing to risk the odd splash, you can even wear it in the slushy snow! This month I decided to make myself jeans.  I’d purchased some pants-weight cotton twill in white at Mood Fabrics’ New York store this winter, along with a sturdy indigo cotton denim.  (You can find similar white twill at Mood Fabrics here and a broad selection of cotton denim is available here.) I used Kwik Sew 3504, an in-print men’s jeans pattern which I’d tried a few times before with good results. While I topstitched […]

A Stripey short sleeved Blazer

Lately, all I want to make is outerwear (though really, isn’t everything except underwear outerwear?). Though I easily permit myself benders of neverending party dresses, I’ve been having a hard time accepting the desire to stitch coats and jackets and blazers. Usually around this time of year, I’m making warm weather dresses, and lamenting the fact that I HAVE NOTHING APPROPRIATE TO WEAR. This is my third topper in the new year, and I fought it all the way. The great stripey yardage stared at me acusingly until I zigzagged and fringed the length, intending it as a winter wrap. […]

Multicolor French Cotton Jersey – Katherine Tilton Top/Butterick 5925

Happy New Year all! It’s been such a long time since I’ve posted on the Mood Sewing Network. I’m very happy to be back! Today I’m showcasing an unusual fabric, multicolor french cotton jersey (FC19834). At least it’s unusual for me. I found it months ago while searching the Mood online store. It has two layers of fabric fused together. The top layer has a burn out affect with some parts of it unattached to the under layer. Too bad it is no longer available, but there are other options to chose from. I paired this unusual textile with a […]

Wool Knit Biker Jacket

G’day, it’s Australia Day. Today, despite it being the middle of summer in Australia I’ve made a biker jacket in some fabulous wool knit suiting from Mood Fabrics NY. I have a tendency to sew out-of-season, at least I’m ready for the cold of winter or heat of summer when they arriving. This jacket is another adventure into fabrics I’ve never sewn with before! A wool knit blend, this particular one is sold out – however this heavy black wool stretch suiting would be perfect and this wool ponte would also be a dream to sew with. I spend FOREVER researching patterns for the […]

Men’s Floral Cotton Dress Shirt

I know it’s only January, but as far as my sewing goes, I’m already thinking spring. Last week at Mood Fabrics in New York, I stumbled upon a gorgeous Liberty-inspired print in cotton lawn and I grabbed enough for a shirt.  It may be freezing outside, but this vibrant floral shirting gives me hope that warmer weather is ahead.   (You can see Mood Fabrics’ selection of cheerful Liberty-inspired fabrics here.) My pattern is one I’ve only recently acquired on eBay, Butterick 6319, a mid-Fifties men’s dress shirt pattern that includes three collar variations.  I opted to make the spread collar […]

Supersize Me!

Maybe it’s just me but on January 2, I was craving an oversized shirt to hide my holiday indulgences…. and when I’m in the ugly state of mind, the one fabric I turn to is silk. This Famous Designer Black and Off-White Animal Print Crepe de Chine was the perfect antidote for my post holiday doldrums. I feel better already! My pattern of choice was Simplicity 2447 and it wasn’t just oversized, it was supersized! Before cutting into the silk I made a full muslin which required one alteration after another (discussed tomorrow on the blog). However, my new roll […]

A Bright Winter Ensemble

Yeah, I know. I kind of went Sgt Pepper’s on these photos. January will do that to me. Lack of light, lack of warmth, lack of photographer. The trifecta. But let’s play Where’s Waldo and find my garment in this riotous, ham handed, amateur photoshopped collage! Can you find the rectangle of sweater knit above? That’s my “self drafted” H&M knockoff, made with some famous designer novelty knit (similar here). I succumbed to Black Friday and bought a couple of drapey sweaters at The Beast, and upon further perusal, found they were really two large rectangles with two small rectangles […]
