Blue and White Cotton Skirt with Pop of Red Top

Recently, Mike (the hubby) and I were heading to a casual event and I went to grab a summer skirt to wear.   It seemed like the perfect separate for  the weather and with a cute top, I would be neither over or under dressed.  Now you are probably guessing where this is going, yes, you are right.  I had no cute summer skirt.  This seems so not right, sewing skirts is a fun and quick project, right?   I went with Burda 6904, a pattern I have been wanting to make for quite some time.  The fabric is the [...]

Pretty Poplin Pajamas!

Hi, guys! I hope you all had a wonderful weekend, and if you celebrated Canada Day or the 4th of July, that your weekends were extra festive! OK, while I have, overall, a really serviceable wardrobe that’s really starting to reflect my style, I have to admit that when it comes to the “unseen” items, the situation is dire. Socks, underwear, pajamas… they’re all in sad, sorry shape! Since I began to sew very seriously a few years ago, I just haven’t had the interest in shopping, but it’s also seemed quite silly to spend time sewing things that will [...]

Cotton Poplin with Stretch!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, AMERICA! You survived another year, and I made a new dress to celebrate!   One of the things I look for when shopping online are fabrics that will work well together, and I had no doubts about these off-white and navy Celtic inspired stretch cotton poplins. from Mood Fabrics. Cotton poplin with the addition of spandex is a dream come true for casual Summer sewing! Crisp, lightweight and minimal wrinkling – what more can I want? Using my own pattern I sewed the bodice with the navy background poplin saving the reverse fabric for the collar, placket and [...]

A Raspberry Floral Sundress

There are some fabrics you have to buy. They scream your name from across a store (or website, in this case), demanding that you take them home and turn them into a garment that is perfectly you. Y’all, this Very Berry Floral Cotton from Mood Fabrics is that fabric, for me. I mean, just look at it! It’s brightly colored, full of swishy body, and covered in flowers. This light, airy cotton is deeply feminine, but still very grown-up, thanks to the watercolor quality of the flowers. This is fabric love, y’all. So, of course, I turned it into a [...]

Rag & Bone Blue Crepe Quart Jacket

I was really intrigued when I spotted this Rag & Bone Navy/Blue Cotton-Rayon Crepe in the new arrivals section of the Mood Fabrics website! It sounded so unusual being of a medium to heavy weight yet fluid. I’d been after something unique to make myself a biker style jacket after seeing Pauline Alice’s amazing short version of her Quart Coat so decided to take the plunge for this month’s Mood Sewing Network project and order myself enough of this to investigate. When it arrived it was kind of what I was imagining and kind of not…whatever it was it was [...]

Coral Eyelet Dress

Do you know that the one color you should never wear for a job interview is……. This is no office dress, but thanks to Mood Fabrics, I’ve made a dress ready for our hot summer nights and ‘dressy casual’ occasions! The top layer is an Italian red coral cotton eyelet which reminded me of a Vineyard Vines dress, inspiring me to give it a try. The structure of the dress and added depth of color are enhanced from the lining. Labeled a hibiscus cotton batiste (no longer available) on the Mood website – the fabric more like a cotton poplin with stretch! Actually I prefer this [...]

Men’s Tropical Print Blazer

This month I sewed for my partner, Michael (that’s him above).  I hadn’t made him something in a long time  — as he sometimes reminded me! Last month at Mood Fabrics in NYC I found this bold, tri-color hibiscus print in a lightly coated cotton canvas and, without a particular project in mind, snatched up two and a half yards.   Back home, I draped it on Michael. It was too heavy for shirting, however, and too stiff for pants, and I wasn’t sure what to do with it.  My blog readers — a jovial lot — were leaning toward beach [...]

Tuxedo Jacket and Silk Top

Summer means bright and fun colors but in reality  you just can’t escape black and white and/or cream.  These two colors are classic and always show up in fashion, plus they just go with everything.   I wear the cream/white so much better than the black so I went with a cream heavy look with accents of black for these two garments.   Well, let’s back up a bit, it all started with the blouse, McCall’s 7094, something very similar to a RTW top I have and love.  The fabric suggested was easy, a crepe de chine  and I had [...]

Neoprene Delight!

How’s this for a One Yard Wonder? It’s true – I made this dress with one yard of Mood Fabric’s Watercolor Clouds Digitally Printed Stretch Neoprene. There’s more where this came from too. Check it out here. I want the one with the lips if some cool blogger like Oonaballoona or Sallieoh doesn’t beat me to it Seriously, this is the best knit fabric ever…… It’s perfect for a fitted dress. I’m not even sure this is my shape, but it’s the shape of my pattern and the neoprene follows orders beautifully! My pattern is Vogue 9047, another wonderful discovery with its flattering [...]
