A White Pintuck Tunic

I just love a white blouse and feel like it is a basic item needed for any closet but one was not found in my closet.  Time to take care of that situation and make a white blouse.  I wanted a twist on a wardrobe basic, a blouse with some visual interest.    First, I needed to find the right fabric for my blouse and went with Mood Fabrics’ White Pinpoint Cotton Shirting.  The description states a good staple fabric with a bit of crispness.     Now let’s talk pattern, I went with Butterick 6208,  a loose fitting pullover […]

Men’s Black Denim Zippered Jacket

Maybe it’s because my hair is graying, but I’m finding black denim much more flattering to me than blue denim these days. I’d recently purchased two and a half yards of stiff black 100% cotton denim at Mood Fabrics in New York City and I knew it would be perfect for a not-quite-winter shell-type jacket I could wear over sweaters. (This black Ralph Lauren denim would be perfect.)  I much prefer layers to a single cold-weather garment: with global warming, you never know what the temperature will be. If I told you my jacket was based on a 1930’s men’s […]

A Silk Crepe De Chine Topper

HIYA. How do you like my whatchamacallit? It was meant to be a button down dress…. But then I felt so Bohemian when fitting to mark for buttons, I decided to cinch the waist in a bit more and leave it as a…topper? Sleeveless kimono? Maxi vest? MAXI VEST. LET’S GO WITH MAXI VEST. Let’s also say, that much like my self imposed ban on jersey, imma haveta turn my back on the Sui for awhile. Yep, you guessed it, this is MORE Anna Sui, and it marks the fifth MSN project in which I’ve used that designer’s sumptuous textiles. […]

Men’s Silver Metallic Jeans

I’ve always been drawn to fabrics that have a metallic sheen. But it wasn’t until I found this Ralph Lauren metallic denim — the end of a bolt — at Mood Fabrics in New York City that I decided to take the plunge.  (While my fabric is unavailable online, this silver stretch faux leather seems like a good alternative). To make these jeans, I used my self-drafted jeans sloper and added elements like pockets and waistband from Kwik Sew 3504.  Since this fabric has Lycra in it, I did a little tweaking along the way.  I knew I wanted these […]

Italian Wool Pea Coat

What makes a great coat?  Well, I think many things but the first is great fabric and Mood Fabrics’ Italian Navy Wool Blended Coating is great fabric.  This fabric is luscious yardage that sews beautifully and worked its way into a gorgeous pea coat, Vogue 1467.  I knew when this pattern was released I wanted to make this coat in a deep, dark navy and this Italian Coating was perfect for the project.  The fabric is wool, nylon and cashmere, which is wonderful to the touch but also has loft and warmth. A sewalong was announced for this […]

Linen Decorated Mini Dress

Guess who ran into some more Anna Sui at Mood. I swear, it’s like I’m one of those dogs that sniffs out truffles. It’s not like she has a specific named shelf. Sure, I find her in the “Designer” section…but this yardage was lounging on the bottom floor, in a colorful little bin of medium weight cotton & linen bolts. Next to shirting. NEXT TO SHIRTING. No offense, Shirting. You’re just not my cup of tea. But this craziness was right up my alley! My first thought was a maxi skirt, but in the end, it wanted to be […]

Men’s Cotton Knit Rugby Shirt

I don’t often sew with knits. I generally find woven fabrics more rewarding to work with. But last summer I found a beautiful medium-weight striped cotton knit at Mood Fabrics in New York City that reminded me of those classic French cotton boatneck shirts that have become so popular. This navy blue and off-white knit had the same beefiness as those shirts, and I was delighted to discover that there was no Lycra in it (not a fan of cling, on me at least). It also had only two-way stretch, making it more stable.  (You can shop Mood’s online selection […]

Simple Striped T-Shirt Dress

I’ve just got a simple outfit to share with you today as the garment I was planning for this month’s Mood Sewing Network project has taken slightly longer than anticipated, plus my weekend sewing plans were scuppered by lack of a zip! Aargh! Luckily I picked up quite the selection of gorgeous fabrics in the Mood Fabrics Los Angeles branch when I visited the U.S. last month and I’ve already sewn a couple of other bits up. I absolutely loved the LA store and found all the staff to be so welcoming; helping me pull out bolt after bolt as […]

A Geometric Skirt & Faux-Wrap Top for Fall

Good evening, friends! There is a trend in my MSN projects, I’ve noticed. Almost every month, my post discusses weather and its influence on my sewing. While I’d love to buck that trend, we’re out of luck. This outfit is a direct result of one thing: my longing for autumn. While elsewhere leaves are changing colors and the air dances with chills, Texas hasn’t gotten that memo. It’s been nothing but sunshine, oppressive heat, and weather better suited for swim season. I’m sick of it! Bring on the colder weather already. I’m tapped out with summer, y’all. And so, we […]
