A Glitzy Neoprene Maxi Dress

I refuse to let summer go. It’s still warm enough for sandals, for crying out loud! And yet, the siren song of Fall Fashion seduces…so I married a summery maxi dress with an autumnal neoprene. Truly, a great “transitional” fabric. I don’t believe I’ve ever seriously used that word in my life. Does this mean my closet is growing up? Growing up?! I WILL NOT HAVE IT! SEQUINS. THAAAAT’S BETTER. Sequins defy logic! They are appropriate no matter WHAT the season, and I’m pretty sure they have never, in the history of the world, been called “transitional.” Keeping the sequins confined to an […]

Men’s Plaid Overcoat

My first fall sewing project is a garment I hope to wear straight through till spring — a medium-weight, water-resistant overcoat/raincoat and my first plaid coat ever. I purchased the sturdy cotton/nylon plaid (below) at Mood Fabrics in New York City last winter.   It has a feel similar to that of a London Fog raincoat.  The plaid is muted enough to go with pretty much anything.  (You can find a large selection of plaid coating at Mood Fabrics here.) To make the coat, I used Burda 7780, a men’s coat pattern that has two front welt pockets and a half […]

Geometric Stretch Woven Dress

Summer is winding down here in the Midwest but occasionally it comes back with bursts of hot and humid.  I am not quite ready to move onto fall and winter sewing and knew I needed to sew up this gorgeous Mood Fabrics’ black and beige geometric squares stretch cotton woven (or you can go with the  cream and brown).  After all, this is wonderful fabric to feel and touch and I knew it needed to be a garment quickly.    I loved sewing it into this Vogue 1329 dress ( Kay Unger design). Just look at the details in the waist […]

End-of-Summer Men’s Pants, Shirt, & Cotton Cardigan

The summer is coming to a close, alas! At this time of year I’m focused on sewing things I can still wear in the heat but which can carry me over into the cooler days to come.  I’m about to go on vacation and the weather in Cape Cod this time of year is mighty variable. Here’s what I made to take with me: Last year I sewed a shawl-collar cotton cardigan out of a beautiful blue sweater knit I found in Mood Fabrics in NYC.  At the time, I purchased the same knit in a sandy-beige colorway and it […]

Geometric Column Dress

Dresses are one of those things that are so fun to make and so easy to wear.  One stop in the closet, grab a dress and off you go, right?  I love seeing all the dresses people make in a variety of fabric.  With that being said, my casual and work lifestyle isn’t one that requires many dresses, so I don’t make them often.   Now there is an exception, this summer I have needed dresses for several weddings, evenings out and some work dinners.  My wardrobe was in a sad state for dresses and I have been busy […]

Watercolor Floral Cotton Sateen

It’s clear that I love floral prints.  In recent months I’ve ordered several yardages of bright, bold floral prints.  My favorite, so far, for 2015 is Mood multi- color watercolor cotton sateen.  (Too bad it’s already sold out.)  The colors warm my skin giving me a summer glow.   Mood has a huge selection  of floral prints to pick from if this is not your favorite color.  My dress is completely lined with Mood’s mint -mechanical stretch polyester crepe de chine.  I regularly surf  Pinterest looking for inspirational garments.  I found this dress early summer and I knew I’d make […]

Men’s Blue Linen Summer Coveralls

What does one make with three yards of blue linen from Mood Fabrics? If you’re me, you sew yourself up a pair of summer coveralls! I loved the color of this linen the moment I saw it.  Is it sky blue, azure blue, French blue, or Wedgwood blue? (I’m not very good at labeling colors.)  Regardless, I love it.  (You can check out Mood Fabrics’ selection of linen and linen blends here.) I had purchased Kwik Sew 3389, a men’s coveralls pattern, last year but wasn’t sure whether I’d actually wear coveralls, so it sat unused.  But thinking about this […]

Linen lovin’

Are you shocked to see me in blue? With a black tank top, no less?! Me too. A warm toned gal, I am I am, so obviously the wall needed to bend to my fiery will. And once again, I’ve bent to the will of Anna Sui. This bolt of luscious linen positively leapt out from the shelf at Mood NY and punched me in the heartstrings. Surprise surprise, selvedge says: it’s Sui. If memory serves, I grabbed 2 yards, and immediately kicked myself when I got home and got to thinking. I wanted a maxi skirt to make the most […]

Blue and White Cotton Skirt with Pop of Red Top

Recently, Mike (the hubby) and I were heading to a casual event and I went to grab a summer skirt to wear.   It seemed like the perfect separate for  the weather and with a cute top, I would be neither over or under dressed.  Now you are probably guessing where this is going, yes, you are right.  I had no cute summer skirt.  This seems so not right, sewing skirts is a fun and quick project, right?   I went with Burda 6904, a pattern I have been wanting to make for quite some time.  The fabric is the […]
