Graphic Print Tunic

Isn’t it fun when a fabric just draws you in?  That is exactly what happened with Mood Fabrics’ Indigo Peacock-Inspired Rayon Woven.  I knew I needed to make something from this fabric and a tunic was the garment I started to envision.  I went with Vogue 9151 and started looking for an good coordinating fabric.  Mixing prints is so much fun, I searched Mood Fabrics for a good match.  Sometimes online it is hard to get a good color  match for fabric as colors look different on the computer screen versus in real life!   I decided to look for […]

Men’s Liberty of London Cotton Poplin Shirt

When it comes to menswear, shirts are my favorite garment to make. I relish the challenges involved, like precise topstitching, special finishes like flat-felled seams, and the creation of a perfectly balanced collar. I also enjoy the creative challenge of finding coordinating fabrics to add special touches like a contrasting inner collar stand, cuff, or under collar.  These details can be hard to find in ready-to-wear shirts, but make what might otherwise be an ordinary shirt into something special. I love working with the Liberty of London and Liberty-inspired cottons available at Mood Fabrics. Last summer I found a beautiful […]

Nautical Blue Stretch Rayon Ponte Knit is Perfect in Winter – Vogue 8780

You might think why buy ponte knit from a online fabric store like Mood.  All fabric stores sell it.  Well, I can give you one good reason why Mood is the perfect source to purchase your ponte:  outstanding quality.  This stretch rayon ponte knit is absolutely beautiful.  It has a smooth, soft hand; easy to sew; and the color is vibrant and rich.  It’s the perfect textile to make comfortable, but stylish dresses, pants, tops and jackets. This is one of my last two Mood projects of 2015.  I had hoped to publish these pieces sooner, but the Chicago weather […]

Derek Lam Cotton Knit Jacket

The purchase of this gorgeous thick knit from Derek Lam for this month’s Mood Sewing Network project was a no brainer. Living in London my handmade wardrobe is constantly in need of snuggly, comfy garments suitable for layering and making them out of unique fabrics like this one means I still feel great wearing them. I picked this piece in Mood Fabrics LA back in September and whilst it was available online it’s now unfortunately sold out. However, hunting for it I did discovering this amazing striped French Terry from the same designer which has been immediately added to my […]

Polka Dot Jacquard Jacket

In my last blog post, I announced a hefty challenge I am embracing for my upcoming birthday which rolls around in approximately 345 days. I plan to celebrate the new 40 with 40 new garments made by moi, and I’m beginning the challenge by combating the drab clothes that dominate my winter wardrobe. Hello color and Happy Holidays!   Mood Fabric’s Green on Black Polka Dotted Polyester Jacquard caught my eye online and nearly blinded me when I opened the package – but what an antidote for winter drab! (more colors here) I paired the fabric with Butterick 6103. Whether it […]

A White Pintuck Tunic

I just love a white blouse and feel like it is a basic item needed for any closet but one was not found in my closet.  Time to take care of that situation and make a white blouse.  I wanted a twist on a wardrobe basic, a blouse with some visual interest.    First, I needed to find the right fabric for my blouse and went with Mood Fabrics’ White Pinpoint Cotton Shirting.  The description states a good staple fabric with a bit of crispness.     Now let’s talk pattern, I went with Butterick 6208,  a loose fitting pullover […]

Men’s Black Denim Zippered Jacket

Maybe it’s because my hair is graying, but I’m finding black denim much more flattering to me than blue denim these days. I’d recently purchased two and a half yards of stiff black 100% cotton denim at Mood Fabrics in New York City and I knew it would be perfect for a not-quite-winter shell-type jacket I could wear over sweaters. (This black Ralph Lauren denim would be perfect.)  I much prefer layers to a single cold-weather garment: with global warming, you never know what the temperature will be. If I told you my jacket was based on a 1930’s men’s […]

A Silk Crepe De Chine Topper

HIYA. How do you like my whatchamacallit? It was meant to be a button down dress…. But then I felt so Bohemian when fitting to mark for buttons, I decided to cinch the waist in a bit more and leave it as a…topper? Sleeveless kimono? Maxi vest? MAXI VEST. LET’S GO WITH MAXI VEST. Let’s also say, that much like my self imposed ban on jersey, imma haveta turn my back on the Sui for awhile. Yep, you guessed it, this is MORE Anna Sui, and it marks the fifth MSN project in which I’ve used that designer’s sumptuous textiles. […]

Men’s Silver Metallic Jeans

I’ve always been drawn to fabrics that have a metallic sheen. But it wasn’t until I found this Ralph Lauren metallic denim — the end of a bolt — at Mood Fabrics in New York City that I decided to take the plunge.  (While my fabric is unavailable online, this silver stretch faux leather seems like a good alternative). To make these jeans, I used my self-drafted jeans sloper and added elements like pockets and waistband from Kwik Sew 3504.  Since this fabric has Lycra in it, I did a little tweaking along the way.  I knew I wanted these […]
