Colorful menswear for spring!

Spring makes me want more color in my wardrobe.  And in everyone else’s! I worked on two additional projects this month I wanted to share. One is a wacky and wonderful knit sweater I made for myself and the other is a long-sleeved dress shirt in an Easter-y palette I made for my partner, Michael. First, the sweater. I found this wonderful wool blend Italian knit — a  one-yard bolt end — at Mood Fabrics in NYC. I loved the saturated colors, which immediately made me think of The Simpsons – very cartoonish.  It also has raised areas, like a topographical [...]

Hit And Miss

Please excuse the pseudo artsy filtered image, but this little floaty top makes me feel like I’m walking around in a real life Instagram. Wait, hold on… There you go! Back to reality. CLOSE UP REALITY. Where you can see aaaaaallllll of the wrinkles in my second pair of Birkin Flares! I consider this pair practice in the process of making jeans, not so much a win in the process of filling the holes in my separates closet. The fabric, a Marc Jacobs denim, has far too much stretch for this pattern, which is hit-you-over-the-head obvious in the fabric content– [...]

Men’s Distressed Plaid Cotton Shirt

These are exciting times for menswear, with a lot of innovative designs that really push the envelope. Still, most men continue to wear primarily traditional shirts and pants. Most of the time, I follow this tradition.  But I do like quirky touches. That’s why I was so excited to find a very unusual shirting fabric at Mood Fabrics recently, an Alexander Wang cotton blend plaid with a distressed effect I’d never seen before. It looks like the fabric has been eaten away by acid or eroded by nature. It was both traditional and avant-garde and I loved it. I decided [...]

Pink Twill Jacket

Yes, the grass is turning green and the daffodils are blooming and  the bushes are budding.  Spring is here and it is early!   I am so happy for the temperatures to warm up but first it is cool and wet spring days and that means a new jacket is needed.  I seem to associate spring with pastel colors especially with Easter less than two weeks away.  When I bought this Mood Fabrics’ Mellow Rose Cotton Stretch Twill, I knew  it was going to be a spring jacket, I just wasn’t sure of the pattern.  Sorry, this soft pink [...]

Viscose Wrap Dress

Greetings There is viscose and there is viscose. I am wearing viscose, more specifically Poppy Abstract Stretch Viscose from Mood Fabrics. Upon reading the website’s fabric description as “wonderful for wrap dresses reminiscent of DVF,” I placed a quick order and found the description quite accurate. What is Viscose, you asked? For the scientific definition click here. Viscose, often labeled rayon is a regenerated cellulose fiber resulting somewhere in between a natural and synthetic fabric. I made my dress from a Viscose Jersey, knitted with 4% elastine. Viscose quality can vary, but this viscose is cream of the crop My pattern is [...]

Performance Spandex Activewear

One of my big sewing goals this year was to try sewing my own activewear as it is the one type of clothing that my wardrobe is fairly lacking in and which I do get a fair bit of wear out of yet have never tried to make. Why keep making party dresses which only make it out of the house once or twice when I can make something that I will really put through it’s paces and which looks interesting and challenging to sew to boot! Towards the end of last year I spotted the new range of Max-Dri [...]

A Casual Bug

Well, I guess that settles it, I’m on a separates kick. I had a lightbulb moment while making a top for my last pair of jeans (because it seems I can’t make a pair of Birkin flares without something to go with it–like a Liberty of London blouse). There’s a whole new learning curve for separates. I can get behind throwing all manner of yardage at my fancy dresses, including stuff meant for a casual t-shirt, but I’m finding the same isn’t so easily done with casual wear. Just ask my bag of February UFOs. And proportion! I gotta [...]

Flannel and Denim with a 70′s Vibe

Something about late February makes me want to snuggle up in cotton flannel. At Mood Fabrics in NYC, I found a beautiful, super-soft flannel in a muted blue, black, and white plaid which I knew would eventually end up as a winter shirt for me. (You can see Mood’s online selection of cotton flannel shirting here.) This month I decided flannel-shirt time had arrived, and I whipped one up using a favorite vintage Seventies shirt pattern, Butterick 4575.  The only change I made from the original pattern was to add contrasting inner cuffs and collar stand using black cotton sateen [...]

Saint James Ponte Dress and Long Cardigan

Spring is in the air and a cute dress is a much needed item for me.  I wanted a dress that would be a good transition piece and fun to wear.  Enter Mood Fabrics’ Navy/Ecru Saint James Ponte Knit, an amazing knit, probably one of the nicest knits I have ever sewn.  I am sorry to say it is sold out in the navy/ecru colorway but  no fear there are several other option: red/navy, ecru/gray, navy/kelly. or take a look at all the color choices     My pattern for this fabulous knit, Butterick 6207,  which has raglan sleeves, neckband, [...]
