Floral Maxi Skirt

Sometimes  you just need  something floral and pretty and girly, this fabric met all three criteria and it was love at first sight.  The fabric is a Charcoal floral cotton sateen and is almost sold out. Don’t worry there is another colorway and all these other cotton sateens.  I had the pattern in mind for this floral sateen and it is Sewaholic Gabriola Skirt.  This skirt is a wonderful skirt pattern with lots of flow and bias but be warned, it needs lots of fabric.   The amount of fabric?  Well, depends on the width, 3.5 yards to 5 yards, so […]

Bright Floral Top for Spring!

Hi Everyone! I hope if you’re in the northern hemisphere you’re starting to feel the presence of spring! Here in my little corner of Texas we like to skip the whole transitional season thing and move right into summer.  After living here for 6 years I’ve finally resigned myself to this and just accepted the fact that I shouldn’t become to invested in cold weather sewing.  The truth is I will always get much more wear out of an extensive warm weather wardrobe than I will wool coats – no matter how fun they are to sew! This month I […]

Silk Jersey Off-the-shoulder Mini Dress

Meet my new favorite dress. OH DON’T BE COY SHOW US THE FRONT I love it so much! You guys, I was on the road to failure with this Silk Jersey Panel Print for so long, I thought the trip would never end! It started in Mood Fabric’s NY location, when I turned from the cutting table and came face to face with this beauty. She was in my arms within seconds. Foot on the floor, I screamed north with my new companion, racing to Drapey Town. But I made a wrong turn at Cuttersville, and when I found myself […]

Linen Stripe Jacket

Linen and warmer temperatures just go together, right?  When I spotted this Rag and Bone Linen on Mood Fabrics site, I knew I had to have it.  The fabric is sold by the panel and I ordered 2 panels which was just enough to squeeze out this jacket.     Now what to make with this fabulous linen?  I found some ideas on Pinterest, mainly unstructured tops with some fun play on the stripes.  That seemed like a good idea to start but I wasn’t quite sure.  Next step was to look through my patterns and I found  Vogue […]

Introducing the boxtop, a new menswear garment!

Men’s fashion doesn’t change very quickly, so every once in a while I like to give it a little push. The idea of combining a dress shirt with boxers isn’t original to me. Back in the 1920’s, Arrow offered something similar.  (Notice how the Arrow shirt buttons up the right leg.) More recently, a French company has begun marketing a shirt/boxer combo called the calchemise, which I wrote about earlier this month on my blog.  My readers were ambivalent and, initially, I was too.  So I decided to make one and see for myself. For my version, I used a […]

Maroon Double Cloth Lace – Simplicity 1314

My eyes light up with joy when I see something beautiful.  And that was exactly what happened when I saw this Maroon Double Cloth with Lace from Mood.  At first, I imagined a high-waist pencil skirt.  But when the pretty cloth arrived to my surprise the yardage was more than I requested.  It must have been the last on the roll, because it included this tag.  No matter the circumstance, I was too happy to get a little more and couldn’t let it go to waste.  So I decided to make Simplicity 1314 again.   There is nothing wrong […]

Cotton Stretch Sateen

Baby or bridal shower, garden party or luncheon, I’ve got a blooming dress to wear 🙂 My fabric, a blue/green/white floral cotton stretch sateen is only one of many from Mood Fabrics’ delightful collection of cotton stretch sateens! With Spring in full bloom, I was craving a bouquet of my own and selected Butterick 6048, View C for its  whimsical cutout shoulders. What I thought would be an easy sew became quite eventful, but the sateen beautifully held its own against multiple bastings, the frixon pen and a busy seam ripper. The dress is designed as a pullover (with a center back seam), but […]

Emerald Cotton Riding Jacket

We all have a list. Whether you’ve collected it into a spreadsheet or Pinterest board, whether it’s posted above your sewing machine or lodges only in your mind, amorphous and ever-changing, every sewist has one. The list of dream projects. Mine is filled with all sorts of garments, from swirling velvet cloaks to exact replicas of every costume from Thoroughly Modern Millie. It’s rare that I actually sew something off this list, because how often do I need a floor length lavender silk gown with a bateau neckline? Sometimes, though, real world needs and dream projects collide. Such was the […]

Colorful menswear for spring!

Spring makes me want more color in my wardrobe.  And in everyone else’s! I worked on two additional projects this month I wanted to share. One is a wacky and wonderful knit sweater I made for myself and the other is a long-sleeved dress shirt in an Easter-y palette I made for my partner, Michael. First, the sweater. I found this wonderful wool blend Italian knit — a  one-yard bolt end — at Mood Fabrics in NYC. I loved the saturated colors, which immediately made me think of The Simpsons — very cartoonish.  It also has raised areas, like a topographical […]
