Beautiful cotton print becomes Beautiful shirt!

Shirtmaking is one of my favorite types of sewing. (Tailoring is a close second, but much more work.) I am extremely fortunate to live less than a mile from Mood Fabrics so, when I decided to make my partner, Michael, a shirt, I invited him to visit Mood with me. He was a bit overwhelmed by their huge selection of cotton shirting, but I helped him to narrow down his choices. His favorite was this beautiful cotton ribbon print, very much in the Liberty of London vein. (You can shop for cotton shirting at Mood Fabrics online here.) For Michael’s [...]

The Baja Blue Single-Shoulder Stretch Crepe Jumpsuit

When you find a great fabric you love, you buy it multiple times! That’s what I did with this amazing Theory Baja Blue Stretch Crepe, which is unfortunately sold out. I bought this fabric last year and made this great dress and it immediately sold out then. If Mood restocks this one, you should grab it. But until then, here are some selections that I think would be great (Ralph Lauren Evening Blue Stretch Crepe, Deep Wisteria Stretch Polyester Crepe and Italian Stretch Polyester Crepe Fabric). It’s no secret that I love a jumpsuit. And I always like for my fabric to have [...]

Sunny Blue Sky Striped Cotton Chambray – Simplicity 1371 and Simplicity 8389

July is the peak of summer. I love that the days are long and the sun shines so bright.  What I hate is the humidity and the extreme temperatures, and everyone has the AC set to “North Pole”.  So it can be a struggle trying to figure out what to wear. But if you plan to be outdoors, light and airy clothing is the way to go! I purchased this lovely Blue Sky Striped Cotton Chambray a few months with the thought of making a shirt.  When I pulled it from the packaging, I quickly changed my mind and decided [...]

Easy Ponte Summer Separates

Hi there! Is it hot where you are? Because it sure is hot here! July is most definitely the least forgiving summer month in terms of the heat and humidity here in coastal Texas.  And, no coincidence, it also happens to be the summer month when I have the least interest in clothes of any sort! Even just looking at the prettiest of sundresses all I can think is “sweaty back”. It’s no surprise that my sewjo also takes a nosedive during the summer doldrums as well.  When wearing clothes turns into an unpleasant reality, making clothes loses a bit of [...]

Eloise at the Plaza Dress

With an unapologetic youthfulness straight out of an “Eloise at the Plaza” book, add this adorable Pink and Blue Printed Stretch Cotton Sateen to your collection! Hand drawn flowers, swirled vines and hearts move in a kaleidoscopic fashion over a light blue background. A crisp hand is paired with a stiff drape for perfectly tailored pieces. Its stretch through the weft ensures the perfect fit for bodycon pieces as well! Make crop tops, shorts and shift dresses for an adorable spring/summer look. Who can resist a description like this?? I ordered the fabric with pants in mind since cotton sateen [...]

Viscose For Summer Heat!

This is one of those fabrics that has to be experienced in real life, the lens doesn’t do it justice! To come close to the true colors in this Italian viscose jersey, I had to bump up the saturation. And now I have “Pump Up the Volume” in my head. My apologies if you do, too. Let me change that ear worm with the story of this garment’s first outing! Rob & I snapped these photos in the golden hour, on our way to Lincoln Center’s opening night of #LCOutOfDoors. It’s a wonderful, free program offered every summer, with nights [...]

Gingham Culottes for the Summer Ends

Pinterest was the inspiration for these gingham culottes and I am so happy I took a look for an idea.  I really love the look of these and will be so fun for the dog days of summer.  Let me restate that as the dog days of summer mean the hot, sultry days of summer and as cute as these culottes are, the are not cool.  So my gingham culottes are perfect for the air conditioning while the hot summer is on the outside! I love this Theory Black and White Gingham Stretch Cotton Twill but I am [...]

Striped Linen Men’s Shirt with Liberty of London Contrast

Is there any more comfortable, cool summer fabric than linen? I purchased this candy-striped red and white lightweight linen last year and this summer decided to use it to make a casual short-sleeve shirt. (You can find similar lightweight (i.e, shirt-weight) linen stripes at Mood online here.) I made my shirt using vintage Seventies Vogue pattern 9617. I made just a few changes to the pattern, choosing to add two pockets instead of one, and shortening the length by roughly 1″ — a standard alteration I make to most commercial shirt patterns. I chose to decorate both the inside pocket [...]

Blast from the Past – Paisley Sateen Shirting – McCall 7575

Sometimes, the “ole school” in me comes shining through.  Even in my fabric picking.  Remember, way back in January when I came to New York to visit with my sewing friends.  Our first stop on our fabric shopping spree was at Mood.    I bought two yards of this gorgeous paisley print sateen, and I knew exactly what I was going to make. I was seriously, hoping that it was available at the online store and it is.  Appropriately named:  Pacific Green Paisley Printed on Corded Cotton Sateen.  It has a little stretch to it with a soft hand.  This [...]
