Wool Double Knit Sweater for My Dad

O, Autumn!, fairest of seasons, when the air is crisp and clear, lattes are pumpkin-spiced, and a sewist’s heart leaps at the thought of wrapping herself in wool from head to toe! I hit the wool section at Mood Fabrics NYC determined to find the perfect cocoon to shelter myself from autumn’s advances and boy, it did not disappoint! The only thing is, when I found this luxurious wool double knit, I knew immediately I had to make a sweater for my dad. He’s always cold, but lives in a cool climate, so he layers up nearly year-round! (Special thanks […]

Menswear Recipe for October: Gingham, Gray, and a Dash of Mustard

What do black and white cotton gingham, gray wool sweater knit, and mustard cotton twill have in common? Nothing — until I sewed them into a fall combo I love! After last month’s houndstooth success, I knew I wanted to try my hand once again with sweater knits.  I love this soft gray rib knit I found at Mood Fabrics NYC, which I was able to use for both the body of my sweater as well as the neck, arm, and waistbands. Editor’s note: We hope to have this exact gray rib knit available online very soon, but in the […]

Men’s Fitted Fashion for Fall

It is still hot and humid outside, but I’m in fall sewing mode. This month I wanted to make some basics that could carry me into cooler weather, and at Mood Fabrics I found soft and silky cotton shirting in a rich tan, as well as a great bottom-weight navy cotton twill (Sorry about the pet hair — I live with two dogs). Note: MoodFabrics.com has a ton of new cotton shirtings, as do our two stores, and here are some great cotton twills. I love earth tones for fall, and cocoa is a favorite shade.  I decided to make […]

Men’s Rayon Knit Tee and Linen Shorts

This month has been all about making summer clothes for my partner, Michael.  (I think it’s time to sew for me again soon!) When Michael and I visited Mood Fabrics together last month, in addition to the coral eyelet I used for a shirt (posted last week), Michael chose a lightweight, stretchy, rayon knit with a subtle floral print, and a rich, terra cotta-colored linen.  I decided to make a v-neck t-shirt with the rayon knit and short pants with the linen. Since the rayon knit was so lightweight, I also picked up half a yard of a sturdy cotton […]

Men’s Cotton Eyelet Shirt

This July, I’ve been working on a summer ensemble for my partner, Michael. We visited Mood Fabrics together in late June and Michael picked out four fabrics he liked which fit his “Autumn” color palette.  One of them was a beautiful deep coral cotton eyelet, a fabric I had never worked with before. Editor’s note: We have a great selection of cotton eyelets in both our stores and online here. I decided to use the eyelet to make Michael a summer shirt.  Michael chose the Colette “Negroni” pattern, which makes a vintage-inspired camp shirt (i.e., no collar stand — similar […]

Patchwork Madras and Pink Linen

Summer is almost here and I’m ready to dress for it! On my latest shopping trip to Mood Fabrics NYC I came home with two gorgeous summer-weight fabrics.  The first was two and a half yards of this splendid cotton patchwork madras. I’m not the preppiest person in the world but patchwork madras is a summer classic I love: it has such a playful, casual look to it.  Mood Fabrics has many different color schemes to choose from.  At first I thought I’d make a shirt, then I thought shorts — as luck would have it, I had enough yardage […]

Peter’s Cotton-Mohair Suit Pants

This month for the Mood Sewing Network I’m making myself a suit!  The fabric I’ve chosen is a luxurious gray cotton-mohair suiting, made in Italy, and purchased at Mood Fabrics NYC.  It has a somewhat firmer hand than lightweight tropical wool suiting but feels a bit more casual (due to the cotton), and has a beautiful sheen. Editor’s note: MoodFabrics.com has a ton of suiting fabrics. We actually sell more menswear fabrics than you realize! I decided to make the trousers first (as recommended in my suit-making books) and the jacket second.  That way you’re more experienced working with the […]

White Linen Pants and “Butter” Cotton Shirt

One of my goals since joining the Mood Sewing Network has been to create garments that coordinate with each other.  It’s frustrating to have a closet full of cool pieces when nothing goes with anything else. Having sewn my bold Marc Jacobs taffeta jacket and shorts last month, I now wanted to create some classic pieces I could wear with them.  I am a huge fan of linen, so I decided to make myself a pair of white linen pants using a gorgeous, medium weight linen I found at Mood.  Choosing from their huge and varied selection, I was careful […]

My Mood in September: Blue Plaid

This shirt was supposed to be done before my birthday so that my husband could wear it to my birthday party. But, disaster struck at the next to last step. The problem: a poorly cut buttonhole. The almost-never-used buttonhole just above the button placket on the collar stand. The one that no one would have even noticed had I not snipped it open in the first place. That’ll teach me not to cut open a buttonhole willy nilly. The save: a new collar stand. Thankfully, collar stands use very little fabric. Everything else about the making of this shirt went […]
